What is the proper way of disposing of a used US flag? Please help. Thanks.
"The Flag Code suggests that, "when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning." For individual citizens, this should be done discreetly so the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration. Many American Legion Posts conduct Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies on June 14, Flag Day. This ceremony creates a particularly dignified and solemn occasion for the retirement of unserviceable flags."
My grandfather used to burn old flags behind the house- he was very concious of doing it properly.
Oddly enough, I believe burning is the correct method.
Please do so in private.
I agree with the above post. Just take it to the nearest American Legion and let them handle it.
By the way, these days in many places you're not allowed to burn anything outside without getting a permit first, so that's probably not the route you want to take unless you live well outside of town.
...and if you don't happen to have a convenient place to burn your flag, contact your local Boy Scouts. They'll take care of it for you.
The War.
Sorry. Couldn't help myself. :P
If you're going to show the Flag the respect it deserves, then you might as well spend a little time folding it.
Thought this was right. Thanks for the reminder...
:)
My grandfather was a WW I vet. He had a flagpole at the foot of his driveway. We lived next door- and he decided I needed to learn how to raise, lower and fold the flag, starting when I was about 6 yrs old.
To this day I have happy memories of the little ceremony we performed together on summer mornings- it left me with a lifelong respect for the flag as a symbol of all that is good about our country.
I hear ya. I have several great uncles(WW2, Korea) that wanted to be utterly certain the younger generation knew the, "Proper Respect" to be shown to our flag. Seems like with every word they spoke, there was patriotism...
