Muslim Thuggery Veiled as Peaceful Protest?

On the surface, it was gratifying to note a peaceful protest by Muslims against the Mohammed caricatures today in London's Trafalgar Square. Peaceful assembly and free expression are the means by which civilized societies work out internal differences. But was today's demonstration truly a spontaneous, lawful expression of free speech, or carefully orchestrated public relations damage control for Islam? The BBC reports:

Protests held in London last week sparked outrage when demonstrators carried placards with strong messages - the Metropolitan Police said some protesters could be charged with "incitement to murder".

According to CNN.com, last week's Muslim "protestors" carried placards which stated, "Massacre those who insult Islam;" "Europe you will pay, your 9/11 will come;" "Behead those who insult Islam;" "Be prepared for the real Holocaust;" and "Butcher those who mock Islam." CNN.com has a gallery of these shocking and disgusting Muslim sentiments, several which are shown here:

If the Muslim reaction to the Mohammed cartoons was an isolated incident, I may be able to take today's peaceful protests at face value. But the Muslim radicals have been on the war-path for years.

Islamists massacred 320 civilians — half of them children — in Beslan, North Ossetia. They killed 12 in Delhi, India; murdered 50+ in Turkey; and have killed tens of thousands in Indonesia, Algeria, and Nigeria. Al-Qaeda slaughtered 88 innocent Egyptians last July 23.

9/11 (3000 dead). Madrid (200 dead). London (50 dead). Bali (200 dead). Amman (57 dead). 300 trampled to death in this year’s Hajj, 1,426 killed in the 1990 Hajj, 251 in 2004, etc. Sudanese Muslims have slaughtered 180,000 black Africans. Kuwaitis ethnically cleansed 300,000 Palestinians in 1991.

At this point in time, I am more inclined to see today's London protest as Charles Krauthammer does:

What passes for moderation in the Islamic community — “I share your rage but don’t torch that embassy” — is nothing of the sort. It is simply a cynical way to endorse the goals of the mob without endorsing its means. It is fraudulent because, while pretending to uphold the principle of religious sensitivity, it is interested only in this instance of religious insensitivity.
