DID WIFE KILL MIRAMAR-BASED MARINE SERGEANT TO GET HIS SGLI LIFE INSURANCE? - COPS ARREST FAULTY AUTOPSY BY MILITARY PATHOLOGIST IN It's happened again. That SGLI (Serviceman's Group Life Insurance) sure is tempting, apparently, for some service wives. A few, who want to "cash in" and be rid of their military husbands, aren't content to wait and see if they get killed in Iraq. They want the "big bucks" now, and are even eager to hustle hubby into the graveyeard ahead of their time if that's what it takes.
Cops suspect Cynthia Sommers, 32, is another one of those "Black Widows" who seem to be so prevalent in the news lately. But for three years, the ungrieving widow and former sandwich shop worker in California "lived it up" on the late Sgt. Todd Sommer's life insurance money. Just two weeks after his death Feb. 18, 2002, the sergeant's dear wife was throwing parties, got a "boob job" to enhance her figure, and found a new boyfriend, another Marine enlisted man. She even stuck you, the taxpayers, with the bill for moving her furniture from San Diego to Florida at government expense, where she set up house with Ross Ritter, since discharged from the Corps.
MilitaryCorruption.com is told that Ritter is not believed to be involved in the death of Sgt. Sommers. FLAWED MILITARY AUTOPSY DELAYS JUSTICE A faulty autopsy by a military pathologist claimed that the Marine NCO died of a "heart attack." That was three years ago. But in 2005, further tests were taken and the actual cause of death - acute arsenic poisoning - determined.
Authorities in West Palm Beach, Fla. arrested the wealthy widow, and her days of collecting nearly $2,000 a month in DIC (indemnity compensation for a wife whose spouse dies on active duty) in addition to the $250,000 SGLI insurance payout came to a quick end. "This is a coldblooded homicide - absolutely coldblooded," said San Diego deputy district attorney Laura Gunn. The prosecutors office has filed "for special circumstances" - murder by poisoning - which means the widow could be charged with the premeditated killing of her Marine Corps hubby.
