I had a dog who used to chew the furniture. So I started whacking the dog with a rolled up newspaper. I used to say to the dog as I whacked him, "fido doesn't chew the furniture -- whack!...Fido doesn't chew the furniture -- smack!
After a while, fido didn't chew the furniture.
