Taxpayer's Bill of Rights for Georgia

One overlooked development coming out of the 2005 Session of Georgia's Legislature was the creation of a study committee to examine the potential benefits of enacting a Taxpayer's Bill of Rights(TABOR)(view the bill by clicking here).

Proposed by State Representative Donna Sheldon (R-105), the study committee would examine TABOR as implemented and proposed in other States to determine if a similar measure would benefit Georgia.

TABOR has been in place in Colorado since 1992 with tremendous positive effect. Dr. Barry Poulson of Americans For Prosperity gives TABOR a strong endorsement:

Since TABOR was put in place, Colorado has returned more than $3 billion in rebates to taxpayers. More importantly, TABOR set the stage for very fundamental reforms of our tax policies and our spending policies. Colorado has reduced our income tax, our sales tax and our business/personal property tax, and we are going to cut taxes again this year. Colorado has enacted very fundamental spending reforms -- the first statewide voucher program in education, the first voucher program in higher education.

Controlling the rate of growth of government should be a top priority of Republicans everywhere. TABOR holds politicians accountable by putting the brakes on spending and forcing politicians to return surpluses to the taxpayers. I'm anxious to see the recommendations of this study committee and I think it would benefit Georgia Republicans to make this issue a central issue of the 2006 elections.

Until we get rid of the RINO's and take both the House and Senate in Tennessee, there is absolutely NO chance of getting something like this passed in Tennessee.

Perhaps what's needed is for a candidate for Governor or some other high profile office, make this issue the centerpiece of his campaign. That would force the issue into the spotlight and encourage debate about it. Let the big spenders justify their position.
