There will be a backlash, I believe, about prices. While it will draw the attention of the media, and while many will try to exploit it, I believe it will be a popular disgust with high prices.
It will influence people's political opinions.
Conservatives who treasure their ties to families who prefer conservative moral values will discover that these families are not interested in economic theory....these families will see it simply as a quality of life issue.
Will conservative politicians try to convince families of the shortage of refinery capacity and of speculators in the market, risking hard-earned gains with these people, or will they sympathize with the impact a $40 dollar fill-up has on the attitudes (and pocketbooks) of middle class families?
I missed the part where you propose a solution?
Complaints without a solution makes you sound like a democrat!
Vanity backlash too.
But, but, but the Demos said that right before the election the price of oil would drop to make the pubs look good and because of the Saudi - Bush connection.
Refinery space needs to be expanded and nuclear plants need to be built.
LOL! Your post is hilariious.
This country bitches and moans how we are the energy gobblers of the world and how we have no right to enjoy such low fuel prices.....well, enjoy folks!!
Maybe now we'll get off our rumps and find alternative sources of fuel......but I doubt it.
Yes, and a backhanded slap at social conservatives.
I missed the part about demand increases for oil from China and India.
Also missed the part about using our own resources again. You know, the ones that are currently off limits even though we have them.
$80 a barrel.
we want oil and we will pay for it
you're certainly correct to raise the issue.
opec is a consequence of the democrat purge of richard nixon.
the impeachment of nixon and the anti-war movement's aid to the enemy, north vietnam, cost this country an incalculable amount of money and hurt.
both democrats and republicans, as well as the oil industry and the big 3 auto makers are responsible for this mess.
we were told 30 years ago that new technologies would deliver better milage, but for the most part, not.
for whatever reasons, democrats and republicans have cancelled each other out on this issue.
meanwhile, congress has approved a new national tollway system which will increase our dependence on autos.
Vanities are to be posted using the "your opinions and questions" tag...which I used. Nor is it on a sidebar -- but that isn't really a big deal.
Things like this are musings that show their head in the great mass of FR posts and then disappear into nothingness with maybe a few comments like your own.
It's a great outlet for frustrations. Try it sometime. :>)
Families that then spend $100 going out for food and drinks are not impressed.
I would like a sound energy policy that includes clean coal liquafaction as a centerpiece.
But none of that is immediate enough to impact the current speculative high prices.
Not even Anwr can do that.
I just think we're going to take a hit from popular dissatisfaction.
The only answer that can be immediately applied is a trade....give middle class families something political they want as a trade-off.
How about far lower taxes? A flat tax; a sales tax.
I think a lower cost elsewhere will compensate.
Moral Values will trump pocketbook issues. Count on it.
Learn some history. New technologies HAVE delivered better mileage. Cars today of a given size get MUCH better gas mileage than their comparable equivalents of the 1960's.
The REAL problem is that folks have refused to buy the smaller, more fuel efficient vehicles. So put a BIG chunk of the blame on the consumer him/her self.

I thought that the Democrats wanted high gas prices...
I think if the rino repubs were in charge, they would definitely tell the social conservatives to take a hike. They'd do it now, oil prices or no oil prices. I think they detest us.
But the philosophical conservatives appreciate the alliance they have with social conservatives. They have to bend a bit here and there, but they tend to be wise...preferring a piece of the pie to no pie at all.
I wouldn't be surprised at all to discover that this problem troubles them.
