When asked--yet again--about Deep Throat's identity yesterday in Austin, Bob Woodward replied:
"When you know who it is, when that story's told, your reaction will be 'now I understand' (why the person wants anonymity). And so to answer that question would lead you down that trail, and that's something we're not anxious to do."
Personally, after I first read All The President's Men, I came away with the impression that, if it had been a work of fiction, then--get this--the authors had written the character of Bob Dole in ways so as to subtly point to him as being Deep Throat. It was just a feeling. I can't really point to the reason I felt that way. And I'm probably wrong. But it's only at times like these that you can mention such weird hunches.
I think it was Monica.

I don't think there ever was one person. I think a number of people leaked some information and the character was created.
Nobody. A total fabrication, IMO.

The movie exists but the 'leaker' doesn't... never did.

I always thought the character was a fabrication also.
If you look at the subsequent work of both Woodward and Bernstein, you can see that Deep Throat never existed. They just needed a source for all of the rumor and innuendo they had collected.
Too bad that there wasn't any way to challenge them at the time.
The sad fact is that no one is challenging them now. Woodstein are a sacred cow. If we started poking holes in their story now, the very unsteady profession of modern journalism would collapse.

People who are control freaks come up with absolutely unbelievable alterations of reality to be morally superior.
Today it's being reported that Janeane Garofalo thinks that the Iraqi vote was for fascism. Which is inverted, as we know the Ba'athist party emulated and glorified Hitler's NSDAP. They are happy when fascists rule, they gnash their teeth when people vote, what other conclusions can I draw?
Any moment I would be hearing the f word in an effort to shut me up.

Has anyone seen Bob Dole lately? I was kind of worried about him when I didn't see him at the inauguration.
Bernstein said that there was a "sea change" in Deep Throat's condition that may make it possible to release his name. I hope that Bob is not sick and more importantly that he is not Deep Throat.
