I'm forlorn and heartbroken. I haven't felt this used since Charlie Hustle gambled on baseball and cheated on his wife. In a cruel and heartless world, we should be allowed to keep our heroes. But no, another paragon of truth and justice has swam off into the polluted waters of debauchery. At least according to the highly attuned rocket scientists over at American Family Association.
The American Family Association claims Spongebob Squarepants undermines our morals. And here I thought he was fighting the good fight. I couldn't imagine anyone more square than SpongeBob Squarepants. But alas, he's been swimming with the suckerfish over at the pink end of the reef.
The Central Scrutinizers over at AFA have claimed the latest SpongeBob video glamorizes homosexuality. At this point, I was overwhelmed with curiosity at how a guy who was so deformed he wore square pants could pitch or catch much of anything. The sordid details follow below.... (If you really worry about masculinity issues, use the back button on your browser now!)
The video is a remake of the 1979 hit song "We Are Family" using the voices and images of SpongeBob, Barney, Winnie the Pooh, Bob the Builder, the Rugrats and other TV cartoon characters. It was made by a foundation set up by songwriter Nile Rodgers after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, in an effort to promote healing.
Having read this about thrice now, I'm still ok. I think my fiance' is beautiful and won't be trading her in for a male hairdresser named Chauncey. As for James Dobson, he has issues and badly needs to lighten up. Here's what actually put the hairballs in his colon.
Christian groups however have taken exception to the tolerance pledge on the foundation's Web site, which asks people to respect the sexual identity of others along with their abilities, beliefs, culture and race.
"Their inclusion of the reference to 'sexual identity" within their 'tolerance pledge' is not only unnecessary, but it crosses a moral line," James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said in a statement released Thursday.
So it's their website, not their SpongeBob video that crosses a line. Phew! That was a close one. Sponge's agent really needs to do more research next time before he signs on the bottom line. I'd hate to see the modern day Savanrolas burn all the SpongeBob videos. They are the Berninis of our junk food culture.

What I've seen from democrats so far is "the religious right is calling Sponge Bob gay!" when, really, it's more about an objection to Sponge Bob and other characters (why is the focus only on one?) being used to promote the film, and the government run schools running it in the first place.

But, in response to the video, one might boycott the show. So, I meant, I'll still be watching the show. But, now that I read the article you linked, and thought about it, maybe we will start avoiding Nickelodean more and more. Pretty soon, NICK may turn into another MTV...

Media is the operative word. The media has done their best to paint him that way. Since when do we believe what the media says???
Go to the website and see all the promotions they use to get these kids to accept homosecuality. Watch the video.
For years we have been teaching our kids not to talk to strangers. If someone makes you uncomfortable, leave or run if you have to. No one has the right to touch you inappropriately.
This video is telling kids we are all family, if someone is a little different and it makes you uncomfortable you should be tolerant.
Kids do not have the ability to differenciate between different and dangerous. THis video is more of the kind of thing is putting our kids in serious jeopardy. Whole the subject is out there, assaults on children are on the rise again!
How can you not see that?

Ignorance isn't a virtue. Have you seen any of the teachers guides supplied by We Are family, producer of the video?
Probably not but should. The teching guides come with it, and are used as just what they are called. Guides for teaching after the video. The questions alone will make your blood boil.

Here's how Focus on the Family defended and clarified Dr. Dobson's remarks.
"From the outset, let's be clear that this issue is not about objections to any specific cartoon characters. Instead, Dr. Dobson is concerned that these popular animated personalities are being exploited by an organization that's determined to promote the acceptance of homosexuality among our nation's youth."
A visit to the We Are Family Website or a viewing of the video (at MSNBC.COM) should be sufficient to reassure even the most skeptical mind that there is no insidious intent to "brainwash" our kids. There is not a single frame in the video that any reasonable person would say advocates any form of sexual behavior. Dr. Dobson is therefore making himself a target for unfathomable reasons -- perhaps he is the recipient of bad advice. It is never a good idea to pick on a fictional character -- even indirectly. They live in the (unforgiving) media and in the minds of fans not likely to take a rational view of critics of the object of their affection. Dobson's case wasn't helped by one his spokespeople who responded to the controversy with these remarks, which will surely attract the righteous wrath of anybody to the left of Mr. Rogers:
"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids." Please: check out the video and draw your own conclusions.

From the lesson plan:
A special DVD edition, accompanied by a teachers guide,
is slated to be distributed to 61,000 public and private
elementary schools throughout the nation in a major push
to encourage tolerance and diversity.
The lessons aim to put the video's themes of respect,
understanding and appreciation of diversity into practice
and are designed for pre-K through first grade audiences
with additional teaching guidelines for grades two to
six. We Are Family Foundation website.
On the surface this appears to most people as a harmless
version of the old Biblical standard of loving thy
neighbor and that is exactly what the producers of this
propaganda video and accompanying teachers guide want you
to believe. The insidious nature and true motives of this
campaign are not immediately obvious but are easily
revealed for what they truly are.
For not promoting homosexuality the Writing for Change
guide spends an amazing amount of time dwelling on the
subject and having the teacher discuss with their young
aptive audience such appropriate and soul searching
exercises as: (Remember these are for elementary school
age children)
Identify ways in which homophobia and compulsory
heterosexuality are at work in your daily life.
Find some examples of compulsory heterosexuality in your
daily life.
How are you affected by compulsory heterosexuality?
How are you affected by homophobia?
How would you be affected if your sexual orientation were
different than it is now?
How would others you know friends, family members,
classmates, members in your clubs or organizations be
affected?
How will understanding these definitions change your
thinking about compulsory heterosexuality and homophobia?
Will this change any of your behaviors? If so, how?
Ah yes, the great evil of compulsory heterosexuality.
Their definitions are enough to raise an eyebrow or two
and arent what you would have typically found in an
episode of Mr. Rogers.
"Homophobia: Thoughts, feelings, or actions based on fear,
dislike, judgment, or hatred of gay men and lesbians/of
those who love and sexually desire those of the same sex.
Homophobia has roots in sexism and can include prejudice,
discrimination, harassment, and acts of violence.
Compulsory heterosexuality: Thee assumption that women
are naturally or innately drawn sexually and emotionally
toward men, and men toward women; the view that
heterosexuality is the norm for all sexual
relationships. The institutionalization of heterosexuality
in all aspects of society includes the idealization of
heterosexual orientation, romance, and marriage.
Compulsory heterosexuality leads to the notion of women as
inherently weak, and the institutionalized inequality of
power: power of men to control womens sexuality, labor,
childbirth and childrearing, physical movement,
safety, creativity, and access to knowledge. It can also
include legal and social discrimination against
homosexuals and the invisibility of or intolerance toward
lesbian and gay existence."

Homosexual Agenda Ping - Here's another very long thread about the same tripe being promoted to children at 61,000 schools across the country:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1326199/posts?page=412
Some people seem to have no problem with grade school children force fed "tolerance" for homosexual life, or even "celebrating" homosexuality.
If someone really likes the idea of individual liberty, why would he like the idea of Orwellian doublespeak and Brave New World type childhood propagandizing about sexual anomalies? Isn't the teaching of personal values best left to parents?
Let me and DirtyHarryY2K know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

I took you off the first time you asked, and then checked again. I really don't understand why you are still on it!!! I can only check once again.
I changed my browser to Firefox, and I see it's a little weird in some ways. Maybe "it" remembers your name even though I don't see it.
I'll check once again!

More on post 31: (Follow the SpongeBob money)
"During the Eisenhower presidency (1953 - 1961), Congress
established the Reece Committee to investigate tax-free
foundations (Rockefeller, Ford, Carnegie). The committee's
report found:
"In the international field, foundations, and an interlock
among some of them and certain intermediary organizations,
have exercised a strong effect upon our foreign policy and
upon public education in things international. This has
been accomplished by vast propaganda, by supplying
executives and advisor's to government, and by controlling
much research in this area through the power of the purse.
The net result of these combined efforts has been to
promote 'internationalism' in a particular sense - a
form directed toward 'world government' and a
derogation of American 'nationalism.'
"They observed that the major foundations 'have actively
supported attacks upon our social and government system
and financed the promotion of socialism and collectivist
ideas.' The Reece Committee clearly declared that the CFR
was 'in essence an agency of the United States Government'
and that its 'productions are not objective but are
directed overwhelmingly at promoting a globalist
concept.'"

However, if we start taking away their little kids' SpongeBob tapes, they will resent our interference and intrusion on the privacy of their homes. How people raise their kids is their own business. PC is no better from the right than the left. Your uninformed opinion based upon someone elses uninformed opinion is much worse than the "bowel load" you decry -do your homework before stating opinion as fact.

The following is quoted information from materials that are to accompany the 'innocuous' video. With the recent public scrutiny some of the web page 'resources' have begun to mysteriously disappear?
No worry, thanks to the Internet Archive Wayback Machine & Google -many of the pages are still available to document the objectively 'stealth' campaign to promote acceptance and tolerance of homosexulaity to grade school and pre-school aged children.
-small archived excerpts from various pages of the We Are Family Foundation (WAFF) website:
- WAFF - Writing for Change (Worksheet -- part of item 3, below, asking questions to prompt writing on sexual orientation of fellow students and the feelings the knowledge of their orientation generates)
- WAFF - Tolerance Pledge (Tolerance Pledge that includes "...I pledge to have respect for people whose ... sexual identity [among other items listed]... [is] different from my own."
- WAFF - Using This Guide ("Using This Guide" part of "Writing for Tolerance", includes the hope that this guide will "...reach people in a broad range of ages, classes, sexual orientations, [list continues] ...)
- WAFF - List of Resources (list of resources including: American Psychological Association. "Answers to Your Questions About Sexual Orientation and Homosexuality." Washington, D.C.: American Psychological Association, 1998. By the Way, this is the FIRST resource listed!!; Also listed: Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. "Faith in Our Families: Parents, Families and Friends Talk About Religion and Homosexuality." Washington, DC: Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, 1999; Lesbian Baiting and Gay Baiting: How Homophobia is a Tool of Sexism. 1991. (Of course, NO listings by PFOX or any other pro-gay-change/ex-gay resource)
- WAFF - 101 Ways to Combat Prejudice: In Your Community (101 Ways to Combat Prejudice #93: Meet with school and community librarians and local bookstores to discuss ways to highlight literature that is representative of all cultures and sexual orientations.
- WAFF - 101 Ways to Combat Prejudice: In Your School (101 Ways to Combat Prejudice #14: Initiate classroom discussions of terms such as anti-Semitism, racism, sexism, homophobia and bias. Then compose a list of definitions and post it in a prominent place. #40: Organize a No-Ethnic/Homophobic Humor Open-Mike Nite featuring stand-up comedy by students.
- WAFF - Developing A Common Language "Developing A Common Language" is this: Heterosexism -- Heterosexism is prejudice and/or discrimination against people who are or who are perceived to be lesbian, gay or bisexual. Homophobia is the irrational fear of people who are believed to be lesbian, gay, or bisexual.
- WAFF - "Miss America 2004 -- Tolerance Out, Understanding In" ("Miss America 2004 -- Tolerance Out, Understanding In" By Lauren Parker {Interviewing the Current Miss America, who is African-American}: "Dunlap also explains that 'acceptance' needs to spread far beyond black-white race issues, and far beyond race in general. 'America isn't just black and white, so I don't approach my platform from just a racial standpoint,' she says. 'It's about uplifting everyone--people of all varied religious beliefs, sexual orientations, class differences, cultural diversities, and the like.' "
- WAFF - Guide Activities (PDF) ("We Are Family" Guide Activities geared to grades Pre-K through Grade 12, including: {from high school activity -- "Pyramid of Hate"} "...Ask the students if they can think of examples of genocide that occured due to race, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, etc...."; {also from "Pyramid of Hate"} Student Handout including these questions: Have you Ever... Overheard a joke that made fun of a person of a different ethnic background, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation? Have You Ever... Been the target of name calling because of your ethnic group, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation? Have You Ever... Engaged in stereotyping (lumping together all people of a particular race, religion, or sexual orientation?)
Again, this WAFF effort amounts to denial of just discrimination and but stealth promotion of homosexuality to children.
