Dept. HHS Report on Prescription Drug Importation Summary

This report identifies the liability issues raised if importation is legalized for entities within the pharmaceutical This report details the diverse opinions expressed, the data collected, and Task Force findings based on the information presented. Some of the key findings of the Task Force are:

1) The current system of drug regulation in the U.S. has been very effective in protecting public safety, but is facing new threats. It should be modified only with great care to ensure continued high standards of safety and effectiveness of the U.S. drug supply. Americans have the benefit of one of the safest drug supplies in the world and generally have first access to the newest breakthrough drug treatments. Any legislation to permit the importation of foreign drugs should only be done in a way that provides the statutory authority and substantial resources needed to effectively regulate imported drugs and, most importantly, protect the public health by providing the same level of safety assurances available for drugs sold in the U.S.

2) There are significant risks associated with the way individuals are currently importing drugs. While some means of drug importation (e.g., traveling to ... Read More

Why is it that a drug made in a US east coast plant, and shipped to Canada (at prices Americans are denied) is somehow dangerous when it comes back across the border?

How are drugs made in the U.S. cheaper in Canada? Is it because the Canadian Government subsidies the price of these drugs? If so, Canada will not be able to sell these drugs to the Americans for long. Canada is playing a shell game with the price and this pushing the cost of drugs, especially new drugs, onto American consumers. I vote we close the border with Canada and let only those Canadians cross the border into American that can prove they have the Fox News Channel.

Here is a nice article on the Canadian Drug Shell Game - Click Here!

"Through limiting the availability of prescription drugs and controlling the prices of those that are available, Canada has succeeded only in preventing Canadians from obtaining drugs that might have reduced hospital stays and expensive medical procedures. Despite prices on some individual drugs that are lower than in the United States, Canada has been unable to hold down the overall cost of either prescription drugs or other health care. The result is a lower standard of health care at a higher cost than Canadian patients and taxpayers have a right to expect. "

Yet another article on why should declare war on Canada as soon as possible: Uniform GlobalPrices mean Higher Prices for Drugs

"Unfortunately, however, if Congress were to pass legislation requiring the same prices in Canada and the United to the higher US level, and the rate of introduction of new drugs in the world would slow to the detriment of all of humanity."

Would somebody please show me were government run socialism has ever worked!

Canada is not necessarily subsidizing the price, they simply tell the drug companies what the price will. They control the price. They limt what the company can charge

Since even at dictated prices the drug companies are making money, they simply sell to canadian distribrution chain at cheaper prices than they sell to US distributers.

Did you read the articles I linked? One study found that Americans are too dammed lazy to shop around for lower priced drugs. The study gave list of drugs which where found cheaper in the United States than Canada.

Price controls always harm a market and the consumer. In other words people will die because of government price controls. Thousands of people have died because governments have held up the approval of life saving drugs. You notice they never report those numbers.

By taking profit out of the drug business you kill any innovation in the future. The United States produces more new drugs per year than any other nation. The biggest problem with the U.S. drug industry is the FDA not the unlimited profit margin. If you think prices of drugs are too high than you should go into the prescription drug business and lead the way. Let me know when you do I’m always looking for a bargain. I bet if you compared the soft drink industry profit margin with the drug industry profit margin you would be surprised.
