Amish horse and buggy stolen from Walmart parking lot while family shopped

An Amish family had their horse and buggy stolen while they shopped at a Michigan Walmart, police say.

The theft took place on Saturday at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the town of Sturgis, Michigan – some 95 miles south of Grand Rapids near the Indiana border – when the Sturgis Department of Public Safety were called to the Walmart on 1500 S. Centerville Road to a report of a stolen Amish buggy and horse from the establishment’s parking lot, authorities said.

“A truck driver, parked in the Walmart lot, had seen a female steal the buggy,” according to a statement from the Sturgis Department of Public Safety. “He gave police a description of the female suspect.”

As it turns out, police had already made contact with the 31-year-old female suspect earlier in the day at the same Walmart, though officials did not elaborate on why they had spoken to her or what the reason behind the contact was.

Police eventually found the stolen horse and buggy later the same evening and were able to find the alleged unnamed suspect at a nearby motel where she was arrested without incident, according to authorities.

Emblematic of how far our culture and society have fallen.

Grew up in Eastern Iowa next to several Amish communities. Super nice people. Always had a helping hand when a helping hand was needed. But make no mistake, they protected their own. And I don’t fault them for that. Look at this world we’re living in and the stupidity that abounds.

Too bad the buggy wasn't equipped with a standard transmission. It might still be there when they came back out.

Do penalties for horse theft still apply in Michigan?

The Amish experienced the “Amish” (in FReeper notation).

Did they leave the key in the ignition?

I don’t have a thing against the Amish, however when I visit areas with a lot of Amish, always surprised how much people do not like them, and say they get away with a lot. No hunting limits for one thing. Most recently I’ve been told they steal from stores a lot.
No idea.

It is not like a person set on stealing a horse-drawn conveyance has to break into the driver’s seat or use any kind of ignition key. Just step up from the ground, give a flip of the reins, cluck of the tongue or “giddiup”, and the horse will move forward, not a big deal at all if one is familiar with horses. The fortunate thing for the Amish is that most people just do not have that skill set.

But then, I lived in another time, when horses were still part of the general farming community, and “horse sense” was still a part of the conventional wisdom.

Was it a Kia buggy? Those are easy to steal.

Why is that the suspect has been identified by her age and sex, but no name? She’s 31. Do they need to wait to get permission from her before telling us who she is?

There’s a sizable Amish population in the southeastern corner of Minnesota. Schwarzentruber clan. Definitely old school Amish.

We vacation down there in the summer and fall.

Our interactions with them have always been positive. The wife and I have bought some Amish furniture from a guy. His work is stellar and he’s an unassuming man with 13 kids. Another family has a place where they sell a lot of baked goods. All using wood-fired ovens. Very good stuff.

We’ve been introduced to some of their kids. Their kids are more shy than the adults. Over the years, I’ve asked a few questions of the locals about the Amish and most really didn’t have much to say in way of anything bad.
