A video of a mother in China telling her son his wife will divorce him if she gets a job trends on social media and starts gender debate.
A mother-in-law in China has trended on mainland social media after she was filmed telling her son not to let his wife work to prevent a marriage crisis.
In the video posted by the man’s wife, she and her husband talked with her mother-in-law, who tells her son that he can’t let his wife leave home to work, reported Sina News.
Although the couple from Jiangsu province, eastern China, has been married for eight years, the woman said her mother-in-law was still anxious their marriage might end. Her fears were heightened recently after she heard of a case where a woman had filed for divorce after getting a job.
The woman reassured her mother-in-law in the video and said her husband has been treating her well, and being a stay-at-home mum has been satisfying for her.
The video of the couple’s story has generated significant online discussion, with almost 5 million people watching it.
“I married my husband eight years ago, and I started my housewife lifestyle after giving birth. He makes me feel very secure,” the woman said.
She added that her husband had been giving her his salary each month to manage their finances. She said he also helped with housework, such as cooking and cleaning and spent quality time with the family.
The woman’s daughter-in-law explained she is happy in her marriage regardless of whether she worked or not and pointed out that her husband helped with household chores.
The video of their story has generated significant online discussion, with almost 5 million people watching it and 2,500 comments left on a Sina News report.
A few people supported the mother-in-law’s view, but most found her attitude outdated and sexist.
One user jokingly asked: “Why didn’t the mother-in-law keep her son at home instead? There was one man in the village where I live divorcing his wife after working away from home.”
The husband, pictured above, helps with raising the couple’s child and is a devoted husband, says his wife. PHOTO: Weibo A second wrote: “The mother-in-law was attempting to ‘steal’ the life of her daughter-in-law.”
Another commented: “The mother-in-law treats the woman as a machine, not an independent adult.”
“The mother-in-law appears to be a scheming woman,” another said.nr
And people believe it...
Proverbs virtuous woman was a working woman and had her own business.
Perhaps the mother-in-law didn’t want to end up watching the kids!
We can debate women in the workforce all we want to but remember that the more people who are in the labor pool the less employers have to pay the workers.
It’s just like the principle that applies to importing migrants into this country by the millions.
Look around you, there are businesses that have to close up early because of staffing issues.
There’s some truth in there. I’ve witnessed it, over the years when the wife gets overwhelmed and somethings got to go many times it’s the husband.
So perhaps it’s time to return to the pre-1950’s model of extended families?
Most affairs start at work with the gym a distant 2nd place.
Applies to both sexes.
I know although the situation is better or worse depending which part of the USA you live in.
And it’s because of many of us are in a “Galt Mode” due to COVID and what it said about our government and its trajectory.
I see non-work as a silent protest against the political results lately and societal decline.
I dropped one job and kept the other for the sake of my sanity others losing their sanity perhaps have resigned from life around others in a workplace entirely.
I guess the import more workers crowd will win in the end they are the “Business Roundtable” politician buying elite of this country.
What difference at this point does it make? They already let women vote.
Probably yeah. Better for families, better for kids.
Believe what?
We should stop chasing our tails over abortion and instead focus on long-ignored issues (and I think purposefully ignored) where there is consensus. We lose the country so long as we chase low polling issues and turn on one another, but if we go where there is consensus we will take the country back.
Keep your chin up, we can set this to rights yet. I know what you mean about multiple jobs, and what is worse is that many will try to keep you locked in to their job alone by keeping your schedule unpredictable.
It takes so much money to get by these days the wife needs to make an income, ideally a part time job working from home.
“She added that her husband had been giving her his salary each month to manage their finances.”
Nice work if you can get it.
I have no time for more Karl Rove Fakeservatism or Fake Fox News Drama.
The Divco truck! Those were classics.
Classic indeed! My Dad had one for our milk deliveries, though it was a slightly newer vintage than the one pictured.
