It couldn’t be cashed...and there was obviously a hold on the check...in fact...what he found was....nothing...

No one could have used that check anyway.
Now, if he had found a book of blank checks, or money orders, or debit gift cards, that would be a different story.
Even still, he’s dealing with a corporation, not some forgetful 95 y/o who dropped a check his wallet while in CostCo. Corporations don’t want to give anything away if there is no return benefit.
That’s the way I see it. Good grief. This is what passes for disappointment for some people I guess.
Any stop payments or holds issued on checks mean that you will be charged a fee.
The amount of the fee is often a percentage of the check amount.
