INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Results from a study spanning over five decades found a relationship between marijuana use and violent behavior.
The findings, published in Psychological Medicine, is in contrast with other literature associating smoking with feelings of peacefulness and relaxation.
Investigators at King’s College in London followed 411 males between the ages of eight and 56 years beginning in 1953 observing them for over 50 years for the purpose of assessing the connection between long-term cannabis use and violence. Violence was defined by two outcomes: criminal convictions and self-reported data.
Results showed males who smoked weed were 7.1 and 8.9 times and more likely to exhibit violence as measured by criminal convictions and self-report compared to those who never smoked. Although the mechanism underlying the relationship is not yet known, lead author Tabea Scholer, MSc speculate the drug may cause “impairments in neurological circuits controlling behavior” This may result in altered neural functioning in a specific part of the brain called the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, Scholer said in a previous interview.
The ventrolateral prefrontal cortex area is responsible for decision making and behavior inhibition.
“These results provide strong indication that cannabis use predicts subsequent violent offending, suggesting a possible causal effect,” authors say in the paper. This evidence may help public health policy makers with issues surrounding marijuana use, they add.
Dave? Dave’s not here man.
Sounds like a call for violence.
One way to reduce violence from potheads is to never get between a pothead and a bag of sour cream and onion flavored potato chips.
So.......its like alcohol?
How about link between alcohol and violence? Never heard of that happening /s
The trend towards total acceptance of pot is full entrenched in society. Quite the opposite of getting rid of it, you'll increasingly find it everywhere in the future.
““These results provide strong indication that cannabis use predicts subsequent violent offending, suggesting a possible causal effect,”
It does not.
Cause is not determined. They didn’t even study or analyze for cause.
All they have is correlation.
This study would not pass elementary peer review.
Because pot supposedly mellows you out, shouldn’t these violent folks need MORE weed??? Like maybe an IV drip of the stuff?
/sarc off
I hate the smell of it.
“So.......its like alcohol?”
I’ve known many recovering alcoholics who thought they could stay “sober” smoking weed.
I think his comment was meant satirically. With all the out of proportion buzz words it just sounded like something a satirist at the Babylon Bee would write.
Indeed. Maybe violent people smoke more weed.
Did they get off the couch to commit violence?
The only violence potheads usually commit is against couch cushions. They dent those thinks up with their behinds.
Save the couches!
Possible correlation rather than causation. Its possible that someone who is a regular pothead may be undisciplined in other areas of his life as well. So that pot use is a marker, not a cause.
I think he’s full-on “Reefer Madness”.
