FEC chair questions legitimacy of Trump's election, Electoral College
The Washington Examiner ^ | September 2, 2019 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 09/02/2019 6:20:29 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

The chairwoman of the Federal Election Commission has raised new concerns about the legitimacy of elections like that of President Trump, who lost the popular vote but won an Electoral College victory.

Ellen Weintraub, who has stepped up criticism of Trump’s claims of voter fraud, said she is worried that Americans will lose faith in elections where the Electoral College and not the popular vote rules.

Appearing on MSNBC, she said that when she explains the U.S. system to foreign observers, they appear confused. Weintraub said she explains that typically a presidential candidate wins both the Electoral and popular vote “and everyone’s happy.”

But she said that in some recent elections that hasn’t been the case, though she did not name Trump’s 2016 election or that of former President George W. Bush in 2000.

“More recently that hasn’t been happening all the time,” she said on All In with Chris Hayes. “And I worry, that just like these other, where people from other countries were confused about it, that people in our own country will come to feel that the result is not legitimate.”

Does "Schoolhouse Rock" have an episode on the Electoral College that she could watch?

So amend the Constitution! There's no doubt that 38 state legislatures will vote to eliminate the Electoral College.

Wow, how scary is this, that the head of the FEC doesn't know the FIRST THING about elections? Maybe she should run for local dog catcher. She is clearly not suitable to be on the FEC.

From the FEC site:

Ellen L. Weintraub (@EllenLWeintraub) has served as a commissioner on the U.S. Federal Election Commission since 2002 and chairs it for the third time this year.

During her tenure, Weintraub has served as a consistent voice for meaningful campaign-finance law enforcement and robust disclosure. She believes that strong and fair regulation of money in politics is important to prevent corruption and maintain the faith of the American people in their democracy.

Weintraub sounded the alarm early–and continues to do so–regarding the potential for corporate and “dark-money” spending to become a vehicle for foreign influence in our elections.

Weintraub is a native New Yorker with degrees from Yale College and Harvard Law School. Prior to her appointment to the FEC, Weintraub was Of (sic) Counsel to the Political Law Group of Perkins Coie LLP and Counsel to the House Ethics Committee.

Very interesting! Does the law firm "Perkins Coie" ring a bell with anybody?

> she said that when she explains the U.S. system to foreign observers, they appear confused <

Well, yes. That’s because in foreign countries the provinces are slaves to an all-powerful central government. The Founders did not want that here. It’s just that simple.

"And I worry, that just like these other, where people from other countries were confused about it..."

Stupid b*tch. We don't give a crap if people from other countries are confused about our electoral system. And if you have a problem understanding it, then maybe you ought to go live in one of those foreign countries so you can be confused with the rest of them.

Don’t know about Schoolhouse Rock, but...

I am certain that the electoral college is the only thing that keeps any value at all in my vote out here, in flyover country.

Wanna change it? Get a damn Amendment to the Constitution.

If it had been the other way around, and their candidate won, they would be all FOR the Electoral College. And when it is completely explained how it works, then it really makes sense.

Foreigners don’t have to understand the electoral college.
Our brilliant founders did.
So do we.

Of course they would. Everyone wants our president chosen by New York and California.

She’s the same one who made the comments about “it should go without saying” that candidates shouldn’t use information from foreign governments...while ignoring Hillary doing just that.
