Humphrie...haven’t even thought about him in ages. One teacher asked us before the election who we would vote for, HHH or Nixon, if we were able to vote. We were still too young to vote, high school. I said neither, teacher gave me a quick deer in the headlights look and asked why. I said they were both liars. I was eventually proven right.
I also read Howard Hughes biography years ago. It claimed Hughes had put $100,000 in the pockets of each, Nixon and Humphrie, so no matter who won the election he would have influence over the President. It also said he was livid when Nixon started naming cabinet members without consulting Hughes...
Hughes literally controlled the Nevada governor, the biography went as far as to say he didn’t change socks or go pee without Hughes’ OK...so he expected the same from Nixon...complete obedience. Didn’t work out that way. And Nixon was terrified someone would find out about that $100,000...kind of funny it was something entirely different that brought him down.
