For all that length he never gets around to saying what is the "evil" the Republican party is guilty of. He implies that the party leadership should have saved the party and the country from its base, but that shows the author has a deeply ingrained authoritarian mindset.

Also he seemed to like the Republicans when they were a "constructive conservative" party. So he either doesn't mind conservatism or, more likely, liked the ineffective conservatism of the 1950s with Congressional Republicans standing athwart history shouting "slow down a little bit" and then going golfing and drinking with the Democrats.
