Affirmative Action: Now More Than Ever (A dispatch from bizzaro world)
The Huffington Post ^ | August 4, 2017 | Michael S. Roth, Contributor, President, Wesleyan University

Education provides people concrete opportunities to overcome real circumstances of poverty or oppression.

Even after weeks of macho vulgarity, preening and unruly incompetence, this week the Trump administration still managed to send shock waves through the higher education and civil rights communities. The New York Times reported that the White House wants the U.S. Department of Justice to “redirect resources” of its civil rights division “toward investigating and suing universities over affirmative action admissions policies deemed to discriminate against white applicants.” Subsequently, the DOJ announced that it was really just seeking “volunteers” interested in a lawsuit alleging discrimination against Asian-Americans.

Perhaps this is a move by the White House in concert with Jeff Sessions, playing to their shared political base. Under the guise of protecting the rights of Asian-Americans, this could save the beleaguered attorney general by making him the defender of white people who feel threatened by opportunities given to minorities. But apart from the cynical political opportunism of this move, we can also see the threats against affirmative action as another effort to use higher education to protect those who already have key social advantages.

Ever since the founding of this country, we have recognized that education is indispensable to our vision of a democratic society. All men may be created equal in the abstract, but education provides people concrete opportunities to overcome real circumstances of poverty or oppression. Thomas Jefferson argued that the talented poor should be educated at public expense so that inherited wealth would not doom us to rule by an “unnatural aristocracy” of wealth. A few years after Jefferson’s death, African-American shopkeeper David Walker penned a blistering manifesto pointing out that “the bare name of educating the coloured people, scares our cruel oppressors almost to death.”(continued)

Howls from the right people. Education has become so toxic that it will take years to purge the Leftist fools from it.

There is no benefit to allowing unqualified black students into elite schools to find that they need a year of remedial courses for any hope of success. If they ignore the inadequacies in their work and just hand out degrees that is just as bad.

One of our nation’s greatest problems is the degeneracy of the Academy.

Trump should redirect, if he can’t get rid of, the EEOC.

If affirmative action had remained that being a minority broke the tie between a white and a non-white, this conversation would be irrelevant.

But, now, affirmative action means that a black who scores 20% less than a white on a given qualification test is accepted, no matter the cost to society - including the lives lost because the new black “doctor” is incompetent, whereas the white prospective doctor would have been adequate (or better).

To use a minority status as a crutch to enter vital economic or societal roles is a self-imposed death sentence on the society.

yup- and its been that way for a long time...

my dad was NYPD for 23 years- during starting in the late 1960s (hideous time for NYC).

17 years on the job (mid 1980’s) as a 2nd grade detective, he took the NYPD sergeant’s exam...he was bypassed for promotion by people who had half the job experience (7 or 8 yrs NYPD compared to my dad’s 17) and got half the score on the test (42’s and 44’s compared to the 88 my dad got)...

that’s what white privilege got my dad...

Pretty much the liberal doubletalk I expected. “It’s wrong to discriminate against people on the basis of their skin color, unless you’re discriminating against the right people on the basis of their skin color. Then you’re not discriminating, you’re ... uh ... uh ... Trump’s a RACIST!”

Until everyone is judged in the same way, those who get "special treatment" ( AA crap ), those who get a place in any school/college, position/job, and/or promotion, are ALWAYS going to be looked at askance...as NOT being QUALIFIED; rightly or wrongly!

Long before there was such a thing as "AFFIRMATIVE ACTION", there were blacks who got into prestigious colleges and universities, through the dint of their own merit.

Why should a kid from an upper middle class to very wealthy family, who is black, get SPECIAL TREATMENT, re AA ?

What good does it do a black, Hispanic, female, or a combination of all of those things, get SPECIAL TREATMENT, but is NOT really qualified for what they got and can't hack it?

People need to keep in mind that the MSM is trying to make this an issue about discrimination against white people, when it’s actually about discrimination against Asians. Harvard is capping Asian admissions, and even pursuant to the tortured logic of race preferences for the sake of “diversity”, there is no justification for discriminating against Asians.

IWhen AA becomes the topic, I always ask liberals this very simple question: If, as a business owner it’s illegal for me NOT to hire you because the color of your skin. Why then should you be hired for that very same reason?

It gets better: CSU eliminates remedial classes in push to improve graduation rates

Employers need to start closely inspecting the colleges their hirees "graduated" from.

“Affirmative Action”. Sorry, liberals, but you’ll never end discrimination by discriminating.
