USS CARL VINSON, At Sea – Adm. Harry Harris, commander of U.S. Pacific Command, has directed the Carl Vinson Strike Group to sail north to report on station in the Western Pacific Ocean after departing Singapore April, 8.
The 3200 Man, Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, two Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Wayne E. Meyer and USS Michael Murphy. A Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain.
The Strike Group was headed to Australia after leaving Singapore, now re-routed to the Western Pacific, off North Korea, as part of the Third Fleet Forward initiative.

They were just involved in exercises with Japan and So. Korea then headed south, so they’re doing a 180 here.

Yeah. I was just looking for a nice place to operate out of that we own and isn’t near a nation that worries about getting “NORKED” if it’s too closely allied with us.
AirNav seems to indicate there’s still some minimal Air Force presence on the island. They have a note on the current page that you can land in an emergency and obtain fuel, but you’ll have to pump it yourself.
The navy shut down operations on Midway in ‘93. They still have some contractors removing lead paint and other environmental issues from their facility. It’s primarily operated by the Fish and Wildlife service now.
Wake, like the chink sand island reef, is strategically, of target value only. Commercial value is huge however. The layout and bay is a casino developers wet dream.
