Victims’ Rights Week 2012 - by Jill Ravitch and Gloria Eurotas
FBI News Today ^ | April 18, 2012 | Jill Ravitch and Gloria Eurotas

Jill Ravitch is Sonoma County’s District Attorney and Gloria Eurotas is the director of Victim Services.

You’re late for work, and don’t take the time to kiss your 13-year-old son goodbye as he leaves for school. It’s just another day, and you think nothing of it, you will connect with him in the evening. Then the nightmare begins. The phone rings and you find that a deranged Deputy Sharif unloaded his service weapon down the sidewalk and hit a child as he walked home. You race to the hospital and find officials present with police. The Depuity is not in custody. Your son, bullet riddled, has not survived. No recovery, for him, only rip after rip, til mercifully, death.

The impact of cover-up is pervasive and knows no boundaries. Any community, including here in Sonoma County, may become a victim of cover-up at any time. The criminal justice system may tend to cover for a rabid officer-involved shooting, ensuring additional future victims. Our job is to change that.

I like the sentiment but it’s “sheriff,” not “sharif.” That wuold be Omar, I guess.

Seriously . . . for Sonoma County readers, please note the following I found on Facebook today:

“A protest has been called for 1:00 P.M., tomorrow Saturday, Aug. 16th in light of the announcement that Deputy Sheriff Erick Gelhaus, 13-year-old Andy Lopez’ killer, will be returned to patrol duty. The protest will take place in front of the Sheriff’s Dept. at 2796 Ventura Ave.”

So Gelhaus is going back on patrol duty. This makes me want to throw up. He can be nothing but divisive in this community. He needs to stay on desk duty only, if they can’t fire him. If he shoots someone else — which I find highly likely, given the fact that he’s threatened various citizens over the years, in situations as routine as an ordinary traffic stop — he is going to cost Sonoma County TAXPAYERS a million bucks or more when the estate of the victim proves that Sonoma County put a dangerous individual back on active duty.
