Four Signs Herman Cain Isn't Really Running for President (Consider the source!)
The Nation ^ | November 14, 2011 | Ari Melber

Herman Cain is running a pretty strong presidential campaign, depending on whom you ask. The press covers him intensely: In early November, Cain was the “dominant” newsmaker in a whopping 72 percent of all campaign news stories, (according to a Pew report). Cain’s rivals now see him as a threat, attacking him regularly. And Republican voters are following these cues, at least in theory, telling pollsters that they support him. But what about Herman Cain?

A review of his recent activities, commonly referred to as a presidential campaign, suggest four big reasons why he is not really running for president at all.

1. Iowa

The first-in-the-nation Iowa caucus is crucial for every presidential campaign. Since 1980, the Republican who won the caucus usually went on to win the nomination. Iowa is especially critical for underdog and cash-strapped campaigns, because the caucus system relies on grassroots organizing, enabling candidates with time for retail politicking to beat better-funded rivals. So underdogs usually seize on the state. That’s why Rick Santorum has held 198 events in Iowa this year, leading the current field. It’s why during this time in 2007, long-shot candidates like Mike Huckabee and Barack Obama were camped out in the state. (They both went on to win Iowa.)

Herman Cain, however, can be found just about anywhere but Iowa.

During the current homestretch, he is on a twenty-eight-day break from the state. His campaign says he will return on November 19—but not to meet with precinct captains or do voter turnout. Cain was lured by the prospect of yet another debate, a “Thanksgiving Family Forum” moderated by celebrity pollster Frank Luntz. All told, Cain has spent only thirty-four days in Iowa, which trails Bachmann, Gingrich and Santorum.

2. Everywhere else

Is it possible that Cain is neglecting Iowa, yet building a firewall in other key states?

Not really. Time magazine recently surveyed Republican officials in key primary states and found that Cain’s actual campaign presence, compared to his rivals, was “infinitesimal.”

“There is almost no organization to speak of,” said former New Hampshire GOP chair Fergus Cullen, adding that local Republicans would not know “whom to call” to schedule Cain in the Granite State.

Beyond the missing field program, which every campaign needs to morph theoretical public support into actual voter turnout, another operative told Time that Cain’s South Carolina operation doesn’t even have a political staff to return calls from US senators:

“We see nothing to resemble a real campaign,” says another GOP operative, who is based in South Carolina and knows of only one Cain staffer there. According to him, both of South Carolina’s U.S. Senators and one member of its House delegation sought assistance with reaching out to Cain, but the strategist said he’s been unable to get the campaign to respond.

Either Herman Cain is running the first major presidential campaign without a field program or political department, or he’s not running a presidential campaign at all.

3. “The World’s Most Expensive Book Tour”

Many candidates use a political autobiography to sell their candidacy. Cain has inverted that strategy, however, using the mechanics of a presidential campaign to sell his new book.

Cain prioritizes stops on his commercial book tour over time in primary states, which led the Washington Post to dub his campaign “the World’s Most Expensive Book Tour.” Before recent allegations of sexual harassment, Cain anchored a slew of media appearances to plugging the autobiography. His campaign even plowed $36,000 into purchasing copies of the book, This is Herman Cain, along with his earlier tome, They Think You’re Stupid. In fact, the campaign bought the books directly from Cain’s company, T.H.E. New Voice. The initials refer to “The Hermanator Experience,” a phrase Cain trademarked seventeen years ago to encapsulate his inspirational speech program. Yes, they do think you’re stupid.

4. “I have not raised my prices”

Even after earning a place atop the GOP field, Cain has not cut back on earning money, despite the demands of a busy book tour/presidential campaign. Put aside the book-buyback program, since FEC rules prohibit such sales from enriching a candidate, and Cain has still found time for a second job this year. Cain may not be great at campaign fundraising, but he sure knows personal fundraising.

“I’m still doing paid speeches,” Cain recently told Bloomberg Businessweek, estimating that he’s already made a quarter of million dollars from talks this year. In a telling caveat, Cain assured the magazine that he has not jacked up his rates even though, thanks to recent events, he thinks that he could.

“I have not raised my prices,” Cain said, adding, “I’m not gonna take advantage of my newfound popularity just to put more dollars in my pocket.”

Everyone knows it takes chutzpah to run for president, but as Herman Cain is proving, it also takes chutzpah to pretend to run for president.

So since 1980, the Republican who won Iowa "usually" went on to win the nomination. Then he finishes the paragraph with an example of a Republican who won Iowa but did NOT win the nomination.

Now there's a good strong argument. FAIL.

They said far worse about her because she has an impeccable record of accomplishments. She couldn’t be bought nor manipulated. Anyone hear from Joe McGinnis?

Has The Nation seen the Cain web ads blanketing blog sites for a week now? Or the paid Google ads on hundreds of search terms? Those don’t come cheap.

Everyone knows it takes chutzpah to run for president, but as Herman Cain is proving, it also takes chutzpah to pretend to run for president.

The current guy in the white hut is pretending to love America, pretending to be a Christian, pretending to be an American, pretending to be hetero-sexual, pretending to go to work every day, etc.

If Herman wins the Presidency he can pass an executive order that every fed worker must buy his book at list price, then he can take a week or two off from book selling and pretend to be President.

Even if Herman only pretends to be President one week of the month the Country will be miles ahead of where we are today.

Its amazing how hard the RinoCracy is trying to arrange a Soviet-Politburo Election....with only “approved” (meaning ones they control) candidates on the ballot. If they worked as hard to clean out the cesspool in DC as they apparently do to keep the Palins and Cains out of town, we’d be in nowhere near the mess we now enjoy.

there must be some real bad stuff up there goin’ down...and they’re scared of We the People in Flyover Country getting anywhere near.

Since 1980, the Republican who won the caucus usually went on to win the nomination.

Why say "since 1980"? Because Reagan lost Iowa to Bush in 1980? In 1984, 1992 and 2004 we had incumbents with no serious opposition; that leaves '88 (Dole-Nominee Bush came in THIRD), '96 (Dole), '00 (Bush the Younger), '08 (Huckabee). Which means that out of four instances, only TWO picked the nominee, and only one of those won the presidency. In any event, a sample of FOUR, is way too small. Not to mention that fact that numerous candidates try to downplay Iowa, so as to exceed expectations, or to concentrate on contrary New Hampshire. Put another way, Iowa is not predictive of much of anything. Jimmy Carter's SECOND place win in '76 (coming behind "uncommitted"!) remains the best example of Iowa creating an insurgent nominee. No one has been able to rebottle that lightning since on the Democrat side, either.

Cain's book is not selling all that well. Unless you score Palin, Coulter, Levin or Limbaugh-type sales figures, you don't really get that rich off of these kinds of books. What books do is raise your profile, and in some cases, your speaking fee. If Cain actually wins the presidency, that would increase book sales. Such a plan is more worthy of the likes of Lex Luthor or The Joker than Herman Cain.

Herman Cain may not be Mitt Romney-rich, but he ain't poor. He is in it to win it. When he announced back in May, I thought his was a gimmick candidacy. When Palin decided against running, I finally got aboard the Cain train, because he just kept sticking around, saying the right things, running his campaign in a low key, but regular manner, like a business man with an underfunded start-up. Herman Cain is no gimmick, and he is a natural executive, which is a lot more than being a business man.

Cain has still found time for a second job this year.

So have Bachmann, Perry and Paul. It should take less time to give a speech than it does to be an effective Congressman or Governor. (I'm not saying that Bachmann, Perry or Paul aren't doing the job, only that Cain can still give paid speeches while running for prez.)

Meanwhile nothing is said about Newt who QUIT on his constituents. He took his ball and went home after he wasn’t Speaker anymore, even though he was just overwhelmingly reelected to his seat. Figured he could make more money writing books and giving lectures, than living up to his commitment to his constituents.
