Why Americans Don't Like Soccer
American Thinker ^ | 6/25/06 | Steven M. Warshawsky

Posted on 06/25/2006 2:30:42 PM PDT by RepublicanPatriot

My theory is that Americans have neither the belief system nor the temperment for such a sisyphean sport as soccer. We are a society of doers, achievers, and builders. Our country is dynamic, constantly growing, and becoming ever bigger, richer, and stronger. We do not subscribe to a “zero sum” mentality. We do not labor for the sake of laboring. And we like our sports teams to score.

Because no one scores, and the few scores that take place often look like accidents. If they get rid of the goalies, they might have an OK game.

This American loves soccer.

Eighty to 85 minutes of play action vs. 10 to 15 for your average NFL game.

What's not to love?

Soccer is a socialist sport. Too much emphasis on teamwork. This in turn creates very few superstars and it's heavily regulated with rules and penalties. Pele is the obvious exception, however, who in my opinion is one of the top ten athletes in sports history.

Soccer doesn't allow the use of the hands.

The human race evolved for millions of years, developing the opposable thumb and fingers. Then soccer comes along, and we kiss off four million years of advancement.

It's hard to say this without sounding like a complete cynic, but soccer will never achieve mass appeal in the U.S. because, in its current form, it is not conducive to TV advertising.

This cracks me up.. It's totally true. I remember a few years back, I think Chicago was hosting the World Cup or something....

The media was trying promote it...but it ended up being you know the three hour match 0 to 0 tie...

They need to change the rules. Cut the field in half and get rid of half the number of players allowed. Get rid of the stupid @ss off sides rule....(also in hockey)...that would open things up...

Eighty to 85 minutes of play action vs. 10 to 15 for your average NFL game.

Montonous action compared to stop-and-go action that creates tension & anxiety as its supposed to?

Maybe if the playing field was smaller it would be more interesting. But really, why bother.

"That soccer may be “the most popular sport in the world” speaks volumes—but not about America’s lack of sporting knowledge or sophistication, as soccer aficionados like to argue. Rather, I think it reflects the static, crimped, and defeatest attitudes held by so many of the other peoples on earth.

"The day that soccer becomes one of the most popular sports in the United States is the day that American exceptionalism diminishes in our souls."

Well, let's look at this another way.

The day that soccer becomes one of the least-popular sports in the world is the day that the world's Socialist mindset dies and is buried - and the world will have the US of A to thank for it.

So let's not give up the fight for entertaining pastimes, folks - KILL SOCCER FOR THE GOOD OF HUMANKIND!

An American did improve soccer back in the 1890s. He removed the goalies, allowed players to touch the ball with their hands, made the surface a hard surface, and made the nets smaller. It was renamed basketball. Of course basketball has the opposite problem, most of the time...too much scoring rather than too little.

The playing field is too big.
They need to make changes to make for higher scoring games.

Get rid of the goalies too I say. Let the teams defend the goal as the game sees fit. You don't see someone guarding the basketball hoop 24/7.

"And we like our sports teams to score."

Bingo! That's exactly it. I refuse to invest 3 hours of my time to watch two teams run up and down a field for 0 to 0 scoreless tie. Put some damn points on the board.
