Well, let me make this clear. I oppose sweep of the streets, and support employer sanctions, and national ID cards. Thus I oppose both yours and John and Ken's sweep of the streets policy, period, except in certain selected instances. I think the John, Ken and Saber trio sweep policy will backfire and be counterproductive, and lead to open borders.

Well, that's ridiculous. Carrot without stick is as silly as stick without carrot.

Nothing wrong with both. I'll give you a for instance...

Back when I was a bartender in the 80s, and MADD was feeling the wind in their faces, laws were passed to the effect that if an underage person with a fake ID got past the doorman with a hand stamp, and I served them, then if ABC (alcoholic beverage control) were to conduct a sweep, I'd be subject to major penalties (and worse for the establishment) while the real perp, the underager, got a slap on the wrist.

There was little disincentive for them to initiate the crime.

Yet you propose less than a slap for Illegals. There is no logic to that.

A situation whereby employers are sanctioned while Illegals are otherwise coddled would simply create a market for ever greater document forgery, with all of the national security implications such a market would entail in the War on Terror.

Furthermore, it's incomprehensible to apply the law only against one participant in a totally illegal transaction.

Would that work for prostitution?

Of course it will never happen in any event. Only the demonizing of those evil employers of illegals will have any hope of gaining real political traction.

Sort of on a side note:

What do you think of Freepers who knowingly employ Illegals?

I don't think in this high tech age document fogery would work, if we were serious. I stand by my comment, that sweeping will backfire politically. In a Torie regime, Freepers who employed illegals with mens rea, and it would be hard in a Torie regime to employ illegals, without mens rea, would go to jail, and pay a hefty fine, that would together make it economically silly to just do it.

Bar hopping and employment by the way don't parse out the same. In any event, it all comes down to an ID and other documentation, including a SS number, punched into a national data base, that would take heavy lifting to defeat. How do we identify anybody who is illegal by the way, if this is all impossible?
