Need HELP!!! Can't open email. Need freeper computer brainiac

Posted on 03/05/2003 6:19:20 AM PST by Hillary's Lovely Legs

RETR Command did not succeed. Mail server responded. Unable to open that message.

HELP!!! This is the message I am receiving when trying to open my email. I know that I have 43 messages waiting, but I can't open the first email, and therefore I can't open anything following it.

I wrote to tech support, but of course I won't be able to get theor emails response. I am using Netscape for my email.

I did a google for this RETR, but everything is in geek speak and I have no idea how to fix this problem.

Can anyone out in freeperland please help?

Which tech support did you write to? Your ISP's tech support, I hope. Do you have Netscape set so your email messages are deleted from your ISP's server after you have retreived them? If not, then your ISP can resend them to you after this problem is corrected.

Do you have any other email addresses you could use to send tech support an email? Yahoo, Hotmail, whatever? If you could get one, then try using another email program, like Outlook Express, to retreive any responses from tech support.

But if I were you, I would be on the phone with my ISP's tech support people, not emailing them.

Also, you could try re-installing Netscape. Maybe some file got corrupted and a re-install will set it right.

And usually, to be able to troubleshoot a computer problem, it helps to have version numbers of your operating system and whatever appllication is involved. For some problems, though probably not in this case, it helps to know the type of computer you have.

I would also recommend using Outlook but that is only an opinion. It works great.

Try another e-mail client (Outlook, Eudora, Lotus Notes) or telnet to the e-mail server in Dos session (telnet mail.host.com 110), enter userid and password when prompted.

Type "list" to view the number of messages, use "Dele nn" to delete the offending message (if non-critical).

Type "retr" followed by message# top view others, use "last" to position to end of list if you have a lot of mail.

I'm not an expert, but I slept in a Hiliday Inn last night.

What mail program? What operating System? Mr. Peel has had this problem with Mac OS X (Jaguar). Mail items simply didn't open. He ended up having to use a totally different mailer from GNU, I think. I've never upgraded to X on my laptop, and my desktop is XP. I've never seen a hint of trouble with the other Mac OS or with XP.

Did the messages actually download? If not, call your tech suppport at the ISP-there may be an oversized message. Someone may have attached a large email file that exceeds the allowed space limits on your account. Tech support can telnet into the account and delete it off the server. They can't tell what the message is or who it is from, but they can tell how many there are and the file size. I used to do this all the time when I worked tech support.

If you are using Windows, Hit "Start" then "Settings" then go into Control Panel, Internet Options, and click onto the "Advanced" tab and hit "Restore Defaults." Also, in the "Security" tab, hit "Default" level.
You may also need to clear your temporary cache--the method for doing that will vary depending upon which version of Windows you are using.
Reboot before you try again so that your new settinmgs will apply.
Good luck!

What error code number was included in the error message? Here is a listing of the different possible errors:

That's exactly what what I would do, too. Dial them up and put them on the speaker phone. Then come spend the time they make you wait in Free Republic .

Problem solved. I called my ISP, Earthlink. And they deleted the first message that was causing the problem.

Ironically, the email that was causing the failure was a special offer email from............EARTHLINK!!!!!

Thank you for all your help.

The problem is at the POP server so there is nothing to be done on your computer so ignore any recomendations there. You can telnet to your POP server on port 110 and use pop comands to delete the message. This can be done from the windows command prompt by doing :

telnet my.mail.server.name.here 110

You will have to give login and password. Then you can use the DELE command to delete the message. Here is a page with command syntax.

Sometimes, when you have a meesage that is gumming up the works, you can access your mailbox via the web, type in your user name and password, and retreive your messages without using your email client.

Does Earthlink provide web-based email access for you?

Sounds like the Warfle pin has seized up in your hard drive. I couple of squirts of WD40 should do the trick!

mail2web.com is the place I start when my earthlink email gets gummed up. There, you can preview the sender, subject, date, and size of your pending emails. Usually, I find a huge message as the source of the problem. Delete it there and avoid the long wait on tech help hold. (and the bad music).

Hate it when that happens...
