DUBOB 11- more tales from the Dark UnderBelly Of the Beast...
various links and websites | 01-31-03 | The Heavy Equipment Guy

Posted on 01/31/2003 5:07:21 PM PST by backhoe

At the request of members, I am restarting those "Tales from the Dark UnderBelly Of the Beast"-- the stories and issues that the press and media either ignore, won't even talk about, or will mention once and forevermore claim "it's old news..."

Naturally, some will be stories which interest me, or things I think we all need to be aware of.

I am experimenting with a minor change in presentation- when I can, I will cut to

-GoogleNewsBeta--

with a keyword or two and see what kind of links to "mainstream" stories I can find in contrast to what we see here and on other sites.

May I remind you of a couple of points to bear in mind?
Each link usually has many other links within- follow them all to get "the rest of the story."
Don't forget the "open multiple browsers" trick with control-n -- this allows you to hold your place with one, and use the others to follow links, run searches, etc.

Rather than go back and rehash old links, I'll give you links to the original posts here:

-DUBOB 10- the *best of* the Dark Underbelly Series--

-DUBOB 9-- even *more* tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast..... --

DUBOB 8-- still *more* tales from the Underbelly***

DUBOB 7-- even *more* tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast.....

DUBOB 6-- yet *more* tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast.....

DUBOB 5-- even *more* tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast.....

DUBOB IV- yet more Tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast-

DUBOB III -- "Tales from the Dark Underbelly of the Beast"

DUBOB 2-- more tales from The Dark Underbelly of the Beast-- thread II

TODAY'S FRED THOMPSON RALLY IN COOKEVILLE: I thought about going, but we've been a bit under the weather. But reader Jim Brown emails this YouTube video: "It was filmed and edited by my fifteen year old Grandson, Matthew Matheson. I was late in picking him up so he missed the first part of the rally. He makes and designs web sites and has all the latest technology and software to work with. He is young, but very good. Who knows? He might start making political commercials for the candidates."

I think he already has.

'The Effect On The Taliban Has Been Dramatic'

The London Telegraph reports on a new tactical aggressiveness from American troops in Afghanistan which has the Taliban rocked back on its heels and unable to press forward with its expect spring offensive. The new tactics involve the heavy use of helicopter gunships and a merciless push to finish engagements. A senior Taliban commander has found exactly what that means (via Hot Air):

Caught in the middle of the Helmand river, the fleeing Taliban were paddling their boat back to shore for dear life.

Smoke from the ambush they had just sprung on American special forces still hung in the air, but their attention was fixed on the two helicopter gunships that had appeared above them as their leader, the tallest man in the group, struggled to pull what appeared to be a burqa over his head.

As the boat reached the shore, Captain Larry Staley tilted the nose of the lead Apache gunship downwards into a dive. One of the men turned to face the helicopter and sank to his knees. Capt Staley's gunner pressed the trigger and the man disappeared in a cloud of smoke and dust.

By the time the gunships had finished, 21 minutes later, military officials say 14 Taliban were confirmed dead, including one of their key commanders in Helmand.

The mission is typical of a new, aggressive, approach adopted by American forces in southern Afghanistan and particularly in Helmand, where British troops last year bore the brunt of some of the heaviest fighting since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

The Teleghraph includes a video presentation that should be seen as a companion to the article. In it, the narrator says that "the effect on the Taliban has been dramatic," and it certainly was in this case. The commander who died in this engagement was Mul;ah Najibullah, a commander in the original Taliban who eluded us in 2001. He had been an official in Mullah Omar's government in Afghanistan prior to getting ejected in the American invasion after 9/11.

American troops no longer break off engagements when Taliban guerillas start to flee. The British had been hard pressed in Helmand up to now, but as the Telegraph reports, they partly caused their own problems. British commanders had offered cease-fires in Helmand to allow for the Taliban to end the fighting and work with the Coalition, but all it did was to allow the Taliban to regroup and seize positions. The new American commander has put an end to all cease-fires, and has ordered constant pressure on the terrorists.

As a result, the Taliban have found it impossible to mount an offensive. They have tried raids and ambushes, but the superior firepower and the ability to get into the air makes ambushes a trap for the attackers. As this raid demonstrates, any gains made in raids last for moments, and the raiders and their commanders pay with their lives -- and gain nothing.

The reporter says that the success or failure of the Taliban depends on their response to the gunships. However, it goes deeper than that. The success or failure of the Taliban depends on the commitment to fight to the last on the part of the Coalition. Now that we have started to do that, the Taliban cannot possibly hope to dislodge American and British forces. One cannot be merciful to terrorists and hope to prevail, and the Coalition may finally have learned that lesson.

"Al Qaeda is surging against us, and I think that’s happening globally."

A Hugh Hewitt interview with Fred Kagan;

HH: You come back from Iraq, you see these changes, you talk with it, and then you hear Harry Reid declare the war is lost. What was your reaction upon hearing that, Frederick Kagan?

FK: It’s very disappointing. I think a lot of people, there is a lot of hyperbole, there’s a lot of exaggeration, and we really need to look this squarely in the eye, and recognize that most wars, you don’t know who’s going to win until the end. And there’s been, there were rosy optimistic scenarios from the Bush administration early on, and declarations of victory that were mistaken, and now you’ve got Democratic opponents of the war rushing to say that the war’s lost, and that it’s hopeless. And the facts on the ground just don’t support that. The war isn’t lost. We certainly can still win, and it’s really very disappointing to hear the Senator majority leader just throw up his hands like that.

HH: One of the things I read in Max Boot’s piece, which I had not realized, is that the Iraqi special forces are operating along with our special forces at night in recon type situations, and are devastating the bad guys. That’s a change of significance.

FK: There have been a lot of changes along those lines. Iraqi forces at all levels are fighting in a very determined fashion. And even sometimes Iraqi local police, which no one has put any stock in, but a former cadet of mine who is now up in Salahaddin Province north of Baghdad, told me a story about the Iraqi local police who were engaged by a bunch of al Qaeda fighters who thought they would just drive through a checkpoint, and the local police shot them up, drove them off, and seized one of their cars. It was amazing. These Iraqi soldiers, both special forces even down to some of the local police guys, are fighting hard, putting their lives on the line, taking casualties and killing the enemy.

And a photo essay from Michael Yon;
The latest group of professional soldiers I had the honor of accompanying was the 1-4 Cavalry from Fort Riley, Kansas. They opened their doors in Baghdad and wanted me to tell the people at home the good, the bad and the ugly. They didn’t hold back; they provided plenty of all three. In one neighborhood where residents have been subject to a methodical slaughter, our people found an abandoned Christian college that had already proved itself the proverbial island in the storm.

When Talk Isn't Cheap

The Unfairness Doctrine

George Will takes aim at the effort led by Dennis Kucinich to reimpose the Fairness Doctrine on the broadcast industry -- and its ultimate aim to destroy talk radio. He points out that the heart of this effort is a mistrust by "illiberals" to trust the marketplace and a failure of left-wing radio to appeal to the American broadcast market: Instead of offering a compelling product, liberals want to shut down the market. They want to put government in charge of deciding what comprises each side of an argument, how much time each gets allocated, and so on. In practice, it's completely unworkable.Posted by Ed Morrissey at 11:45 AM | Comments (6) | TrackBack (1)

The Secret To Being A Liberal Hysteric

QOTW;

No secret: just treat adults like children, and treat children like adults. Require adults to ask the government “mother may I” for every least little thing, from hair-braiding to leaf burning to motorcycle helmets to whether or not you want an explosively-inflating airbag in your passenger seat, thus denying your own children the pleasure you had as a child of “riding shotgun”. And call the police, file suit, and start expulsion proceedings if a kindergartner hugs a classmate, or if a first-grader draws a picture of a relative in the service, or if a third-grader points a chicken finger and says “bang”.

HERE'S A STRONG REVIEW of Evan Coyne Maloney's film Indoctrinate U. Excerpt:

This film hits you in the gut, in a way that no column or blog post can. Seeing the faces of the protagonists in these campus conflicts, and hearing their stories in their own words, makes it seem as if you’re learning about the problems of campus bias and tyranny for the very first time. After the screening, audience members had a chance to question Maloney. I particularly remember a woman who said she was almost too shaking with anger to speak. . . .

Will Indoctrinate U get seen? I don’t think there’s any doubt that a significant audience for this movie exists. But to overcome their own pressures of political correctness, distributors need to be reminded of that. So to prove that there is in fact an audience for this film, a website has been set up where you can register your interest in seeing Indoctrinate U. There you can also catch a trailer of the film.

I hope it gets seen.

Sinking Israel - Within and out

An underground missile city? More "diplomacy" from Peloshia's best pal, baby Bashar. It seems Israel is sinking under the dead weight of Abu Dana Olmert and her mortal enemies. I don't question Israel's ability to win, just the leadership's ability to pull the trigger.

Olmert's hand picked  Blue Ribbon Israeli panel investigating the Olmert governments' handling of the Second Lebanon War has issued its findings. Notably, it does not call for Olmert to resign, and he has already said that he won't go no matter what the findings. What an outstanding show of patriotism and leadership. More  here at YidwithLid and here at Baldheaded Geek.

Israpundit asks, how can Olmert survive this? He survived the war didn't he? That was incomprehensible.

Syria has underground 'missile city': Israeli report  AP

JERUSALEM (AFP) -  Syria has built a fortified complex buried deep underground and cloaked in secrecy to manufacture and store ballistic missiles capable of striking        Israel, an Israeli newspaper said on Monday.

The complex includes 30 reinforced concrete bunkers, production facilities, development laboratories and command posts, the mass-selling Yediot Aharonot quoted "foreign experts" as saying, without specifying its location.

Note the quotes around foreign experts - there goes that  jihad loving AP editorializing in their news articles again.

The "missile city" houses mainly Scud missiles capable of reaching anywhere in Israel. Given its weak air power, Damascus is boosting its arsenal of surface-to-surface missiles and protecting them in the complex, Yediot said.

According to the paper, Syria has 200 Scud-B missiles, 60 Scud-C and a certain number of North Korean Scud-D missiles with a range of 700 kilometres (434 miles), and has developed chemical warheads for all its Scuds.

The chemical warfare agents are stored in a separate facility, Yediot quoted the foreign experts as saying.

It also said that        Iran recently supplied Syria with around 100 Chinese shore-to-sea C-802 missiles -- the same missile that Hezbollah used to hit an Israeli warship during last year's Lebanon war.

People of Israel, snap out of it. The two state solution is a final solution. You must throw Olmert out, a/s/a/p - like yesterday.

LGF Stalkers Get Active at Digg

I just posted about the petty and nasty harassment tactics used against me (and LGF) by leftists, and look what pops up at Digg.com: Digg - LGF Polls Making a Comeback.

How pathetic; there are actually people who will watch LGF and try to be the first to Digg an article, so they can include a derogatory description.

LGF Stalkers Get Active

An LGF stalker update: last week my email address was signed up to at least 20 email lists, for medical products, real estate, etc., accounts were created in my name at Democrat loon Mike Gravel’s site and several Yahoo groups, and I’ve apparently been put on several spammers’ lists because I’m receiving a ton of bogus “undeliverable email” messages. In addition, nasty messages were posted using my name at several blogs, often with a link to LGF.

I’ve also identified several attempts to hack into our site; all unsuccessful.

This is the crazy wing of the modern left at work, trying to damage LGF by flooding my email inbox with junk, smearing my name, and simply creating as much mean-spirited trouble as possible.

None of these tactics have ever stopped LGF, and they never will. But I thought our readers might be interested to know the lengths to which the obsessed stalkers and LGF-haters will go. link: 183 comments  "What you say, Charles, doesn't surprise me. CONFESSIONS OF A SANDMONKEY
SANDMONKEY TALKS TO ATLAS

Sandmonkey

I met with Sandmonkey (at an undisclosed location) and commiserated. He is as charming and clever as you might expect from the "writer of an extremely cynical, snarky, pro-US, secular, libertarian, disgruntled sandmonkey." Fabulous. But his words of premonitory warning gave me great pause. He has scorn for the "new Democrats" that sold out reformers and activists and destroyed fledging movements of democracy.

Upon learning of his blog departure, I was heartbroken. Look, the blogosphere and the fighters for liberty and democracy lost a warrior when Sandmonkey backed away from the keyboard, signed off on his blog and wrote his last post here.

One of the chief reasons is the fact that there has been too much heat around me lately. I no longer believe that my anonymity is kept, especially with State Security agents lurking around my street and asking questions about me since that day. I ignore that, the same way I ignored all the clicking noises that my phones started to exhibit all of a sudden, or  the law suit filed by Judge Mourad on my friends, and instead grew bolder and more reckless at a time where everybody else started being more cautious. It took me a while to take note of the fear that has been gripping our little blogsphere and comprehend what it really means.

Listen to our conversation here:
Download Sandmonkey43007.mp3

Here are some excerpts. On reform:

SANDMONKEY: "Any kind of democratic reform in the country [Egypt] for the past 3 years has been rolled back specifically because there is no more pressure coming from Washington anymore."

ATLAS: Why? What happened to the pressure in Washington?

SANDMONKEY: You know what happened to the pressure in Washington. The Democrats won the Congress. There is no more pressure coming from Bush because he is not able to push people anymore to do those things. He is not able to push the Egyptian government anymore because the American public is suddenly not interested in reforming the Middle  East because of what's going on in the Iraq. So suddenly the Egyptian government is not afraid of the American pressure. They are doing whatever they want to do. They are beating up demonstrators, they are cracking down on activists, they are changing the constitution, and eroding civil liberties once and for all and they are using proxies to take down bloggers.

On personal security:

SANDMONKEY: Security people began to ask more and more questions about me. I ignored it. But I don't think about stuff like that. You can die any day. Is that going to stop you from living? No.  So they can crack down and and they can get me any day. There is no point in worrying about that. But when are on my doorstep, and coming down on me and you see people in Egypt getting arrested left and right  for no reason and being charged with the most ridiculous charges..... the majority of the Egyptian blogosphere is becoming silent. People that were vocal before are censoring themselves big time.

ATLAS: Who are they arresting and for what?

SANDMONKEY: They're arresting activists. People they don't like. They are threatening to arrest any  journalists with the new terrorism law who might voice any opinion that contradicts with the government. They are calling anybody the defends that is deemed a terrorist as a terrorist collaborator and should be thrown in jail. And the thing is there is no definition of "terrorist." Anybody can be a terrorist. They actually stated that trying to pressure the government is a form of terrorism. Anybody that talks bad about the government ...........lawsuits left and right for "defaming Egypt's reputations."

On the Democrats embracing Muslim Brotherhood:

Atlas: Where you shocked when Hoyer met with the Muslim Brotherhood?

SANDMONKEY: Let me tell you something. I was in Turkey a couple of weeks ago and I met a couple of Syrian activists. They one thing they told me that was really funny about the Pelosi visit. After Pelosi came to Syria two things happened. People on Syrian TV were saying, "We forced the Americans to knock on the Damascus gate!" Sort of like an admission that we messed things up in Iraq so much that America had to come and beg for their help.

But the day after Pelosi's visits there were immediate arrests of Syrian activists. That was the fruit she yielded. "Oh the Americans came over and they said they have a different foreign policy  and they're more interested in placating Bashar's ego." And he went out and got [arrested] everyone he wanted because he knew he had an ally in Washington that wouldn't pressure him as much.

ATLAS: Isn't that disgusting?

SANDMONKEY: Yeah, but what are you going to do?

ATLAS: We have to educate the American people. You think the American people know this?

SANDMONKEY: No, but do they even care at this point? I don't think they are interested in the discussion any more. There are people that have made up their mind, they think we need to placate the dictators because America is wrong and everyone else is always right. That's how they operate.

SANDMONKEY: What they are doing is completely irresponsible.

ATLAS: THe world is watching.........

SANDMONKEY: Of course the world is watching and the world is gloating.
Everyone wanted Bush to lose the 2004 elections. If he had lost  2004 we would not have had our push for democracy in 2005. The moment Bush won again that's when Mubarak said maybe we should have democracy because Bush didn't go away. And had Bush gone awaythere wouldn't be democracy right now ...... like there wouldn't be two years of freedom and fresh air that we were able to breathe and that' we've had.
After 2006 [elections] the change went in the opposite agenda.

ATLAS: As an Egyptian who understands democracy, life,  liberty the pursuit of happiness....and who  admires America. Looking at America, I want to know what you see.

SANDMONKEY: I'm seeing a country in great danger. Simply speaking, I don't think the people get what's at stake anymore. I don't think they see where they are heading.

There's more on compromise, diplomacy, Rumsfeld, Bolton,  truth, Israel, the second amendment, the Bedouins, America's founding forefathers ........Listen to the interview. Every word.

The UK/USA Terror Connection
al-Muhajiroun: NY to London

I have to hand it to the Brits. While I have issues with their inability to fight the infiltration of  Islamism,  they are doing a bang up job on the prosecution of the Islamic barbarians.

Apparently there will be several more trials like this soon. The UK has a very good recent record of disrupting jihadi plots and putting people away.

** Five get life over UK bomb plot **

Five men have been jailed for life for a UK bomb plot linked to al-Qaeda that could have killed hundreds of people.

Jurors in the year-long Old Bailey trial heard of plans to target a shopping centre, nightclub and the gas network with a giant fertiliser bomb.

The judge, Sir Michael Astill, said the men, all British citizens, had "betrayed their country".

It has also been revealed some of the plotters met two of the 7 July London suicide bombers.More here

Mohammed Babar arrived at the Old Bailey to give evidence in a cavalcade of police vehicles, surrounded by armed officers and outriders and watched by a helicopter overhead.

The biggest terrorist supergrass ever seen against Muslim extremists stared straight ahead in the witness box, never so much as glancing at his friends in the dock.

He had been on his way to a taxi driving school on Long Island City, New York when he was surrounded by a group of four FBI agents and plain clothed local police (APRIL 2004).

Again according to Junaid Babar, he and Sajil Shahid travelled to the district of Malakand on the al-Qaeda controlled Afghan frontier areas in 2003.

There they set up a terror training camp. "Q" in Luton sent Omar Khyam and Mohammed Sidique Khan to Lahore in July 2003. Babar then met them both at the airport along with some of the other Crawley plotters.

They all went to the Malakand training camp.

Newsnight has discovered that some of those who were alleged to have helped the men involved in the London bombings and the Crawley plot are still walking the streets of Britain. The Star Tribune does that wudu, take 2

Pursuant to its two-week free access policy, the Star Tribune has already removed Curt Brown's page-one Star Tribune article on the coming of Sharia to the Minneapolis Community and Technical College from public access. Here is the paragraph I quoted from the article in "Sharia in Minnesota":

Minneapolis Community and Technical College is poised to become the state's first public school to install a foot-washing basin to help the school's 500 Muslim students perform pre-prayer rituals. "We want to be welcoming," MCTC President Phil Davis said, noting a student was hurt trying to wash in a regular sink.

In its related editorial, the Star Tribune described the incident as follows:

It's worth remembering that this question first arose at MCTC as a matter of safety, not religion. A student slipped and fell after another student used a campus sink to wash his or her feet.

As I noted in "The Star Tribune does that wudu that it does so well":

I understood Brown to be saying that it was the Muslim student who was injured by virtue of the contortions necessary to wash his or her feet in the sink.

This past Friday the Star Tribune ran the following correction:

An April 25 editorial about Minneapolis Community and Technical College incorrectly described the incident that gave rise to safety concerns over Muslim students using sinks to bathe their feet before prayer. The student who fell was herself a Muslim student washing her feet at the time.

So the Star Tribune -- which found the point in question "worth remembering" -- can't even read its own reportage with care sufficient to get the purported facts right. Or be troubled to append the correction to the original editorial so that readers might have a chance of "rembmering" correctly. What is "worth remembering" is that Curt Brown never bothered to look into the identity of the victim or the nature of the injury sustained by the Muslim student hoisting his or her foot into the sink. My guess is that the story is mythical but purposive.

Washington Post Admits GOP Base Is United On War

April 30th, 2007

This is actually a stunning admission to see on the front page of the DNC’s Washington Post:

GOP’s Base Helps Keep Unity on Iraq

Lawmakers Not Backing War Pay Price

By Jonathan Weisman
Monday, April 30, 2007; A01

With public opinion tilting firmly toward ending U.S. involvement in the war in Iraq, Rep. Wayne T. Gilchrest (R-Md.) might have expected praise for his votes that would start to bring the troops home. Instead, at town hall meetings on the Eastern Shore, the former Marine and Vietnam combat veteran has been called a coward and a traitor.

After Rep. Bob Inglis (R-S.C.) voted for a nonbinding resolution opposing President Bush’s troop increases, reaction in his district was so furious that local GOP officials all but invited a primary challenge to the reliable conservative. Inglis responded with multiple mailings to his constituents, fence-mending efforts and a video message on his House Web site pleading his case. On subsequent Iraq votes, he has not strayed from the Republican fold.

The experiences of the few Republicans to vote against the war help explain the remarkable unity that the party has maintained in Washington behind an unpopular president. Just four Republicans — two in the House, two in the Senate — voted last week for a $124 billion war funding bill that would require troop withdrawals to begin by Oct. 1, legislation that Bush has vowed to veto.

That cohesion reflects the views of the GOP’s core voters, who see the war in Iraq in fundamentally different terms than Democrats and political independents do, said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. Voters from those groups tend to see unremitting gloom, but Republican base voters continue to see a conflict that is going reasonably well, with a decent chance of military success…

But this article is almost unique in the reportage from our watchdog media. It is reminiscent of what President Nixon called “the silent majority.” Who are only silent insofar as our watchdog media steadfastly ignores them.

One proof of this is just hard it is to find a single photo of anyone supporting the war on the wire services. In fact, it is almost impossible. Even a Google image search only turns up photos of people who “support the troops” at best.

In the minds of our one party media the people who actually support the fight against Islamic terrorism are both silent and invisible.

“Alleged D.C. madam may release more names”

From the Denver Post/Bloomberg:

Deborah Jeane Palfrey, accused of running a Washington prostitution ring for 13 years, apologized to a former deputy secretary of state for revealing he was a client and said more names may be disclosed to help her defend against criminal charges.

The State Department official, Randall Tobias, resigned as the head of the U.S. Agency for International Development last week after ABC News asked him about his use of Palfrey’s escort service, known as Pamela Martin & Associates. Tobias said he got massages from the escorts and denied having sex with them, the network reported.

“Let me say how genuinely sorry I am for Mr. Tobias, his family and his friends,” Palfrey said at a press conference after appearing in federal court. “I, unfortunately, know the impact such charges can have.” Palfrey is making good on her threat to expose what she claims is a high-powered Washington clientele to show that her escorts stayed within the law. Montgomery Blair Sibley, Palfrey’s attorney in a civil case seeking the return of assets seized by authorities, said Palfrey gave four years of phone records to ABC News.

“I do expect their reporting to help identify potential witnesses for my defense,” Palfrey said.

Already, the lefties are tittering with excitement: evidently, nothing so concentrates the mind as the possibility of a sex scandal—particularly if the first casualty is a Republican.

For instance, here’s Josh Marshall, who—in what must surely be a preemptive attempt to draw distinctions between Republicans and Democrats (the list reportedly contains prominent members of both parties)—frames Tobias’ transgressions this way:

Tobias is mounting what I guess we might call the Haggard defense: no sex, just massages.

But let me clip out just a couple grafs from Brian Ross’s and Justin Rood’s piece at ABC’s The Blotter that show just how richly obscene (and not in the sense most people think) this story really is ...

On Thursday, Tobias told ABC News he had several times called the “Pamela Martin and Associates” escort service “to have gals come over to the condo to give me a massage.” Tobias, who is married, said there had been “no sex,” and that recently he had been using another service “with Central Americans” to provide massages.

Another service “with Central Americans.” That’s what he’s using now. This is the guy in charge of America’s international aid and development assistance to countries around the world. ("I was using one service that sent Thai broads. Now I get ‘em to send Central Americans.") I’m glad this bozo is showing our best face to the world and clearing up any misunderstandings about exploiting people in the Third World.

Perhaps I’m not reading the story correctly.  Tobias was jetting off to the Third World for some nooky?  What on earth for?  We live in a fucking melting pot, Josh.  We have hookers of every race, creed, and color right here at home!

Besides, from all accounts, the women Palfrey hired were required to be well-educated, meaning that presumably they can decide for themselves what is or is not their own personal “exploitation.” Or are we back to depicting women—even those with college educations—as oppressed creatures controlled by the patriarchy?

Because this would likely come as a surprise to some of the more vociferous feminist bloggers I read.

For her part, Palfrey (she being the patriarchy’s puppet) is claiming that her service doesn’t provide sex (my guess is, if there is sex, it’s arranged between the escort and the customer)—but then, Palfrey’s not a poor black women hopped up on pills and alcohol, and a Republican is the first political casualty of the scandal, so I guess we’re not compelled to believe her.

Or maybe we are, but Tobias is still somehow guilty in a way that, say, Bill Clinton was not.  BECAUSE OF THE HYPOCRISY!

Perhaps Amanda or Samhita or Jill will provide me with the proper establishment feminist calculus for determining to the types of women to whom we are directed to give the benefit of the doubt.  Which explanation, of course, I could never presume to understand anyway, having no vagina to speak of (Jim Henley’s protestations to the contrary notwithstanding).

Continues Marshall:

Here’s another good passage…

As the Bush administration’s so-called “AIDS czar,” Tobias was criticized for emphasizing faithfulness and abstinence over condom use to prevent the spread of AIDS.

I’m glad Tobias was coming from a place a genuine principle when he tried to stop people in Africa from using condoms to stop the transmission of AIDS. I guess massages count as safe sex though. Lucky he was only getting massages.

And Luckily, Africa and the US are exactly the same—both in their attitudes toward sex, and in their instances of AIDS transmission in heterosexual engagements.

On the other hand, perhaps Marshall is being just a teensy bit disingenuous in his outrage. After all, even if it turns out Palfrey was running a high-priced sex store, is there any doubt on Marshall’s part that that these women were frequently tested for AIDS, STDs, etc—and that such might actually be one of the draws of the service?

Similarly, isn’t it progressives like Marshall, along with a certain brand of feminist, who argues that legalizing prostitution would be a good thing precisely because it provides a way to keep the women safe and disease free?

No matter.  In the wake of the feminist / liberal defenses of Clinton’s transgressions, sex scandals in which Republicans topple as “hypocrites” just don’t have the same sting as they once might have—particularly when, in order to show up Republican hypocrisy, people like Marshall are forced to exhibit their own, in spades.

Religion of Peace Strikes Again in Thailand

In addition to the shooting, burning, and beheading reported yesterday in southern Thailand, “insurgents” wounded 20 people when they bombed a market.

PATTANI, Thailand - Suspected Islamic insurgents in southern Thailand exploded a bomb at a busy night market and wounded 20 people Monday, police said. Earlier in the day, police found the bodies of two Buddhist villagers, one beheaded, apparently slain by Muslim rebels.

Similar handwritten messages were left after both attacks, saying they were revenge for a deadly weekend bombing at a mosque, police said. ...

On Monday, a bomb hidden in the front basket of a motorcycle blew up in front of a Muslim food stall in the market, causing customers to flee in panic, police Lt. Somjit Nasomyon said. Four of the 20 wounded suffered serious injuries.

A message written in red ink said: “This is revenge for people in the mosque in Nong Chik (district) who were cruelly killed by the soldiers,” Somjit said.

The mosque bombing in the town of Hutae Bongor killed a Muslim man and injured three people. The message suggested the attackers believed the culprits in the mosque attack were members of the security forces of Thailand’s Buddhist-dominated government. Authorities said they suspected the mosque attackers were Muslim militants bent on stirring up communal tension.

Earlier, two burned bodies, one of them headless, were found on a road, police Lt. Natachai Janpho said. He said they were apparently killed Sunday night. A spray-painted message on the road near the bodies said: “This is revenge for Hutae Bongor,” Natachai said.

What Goes Up

Via Captain Capitalism;

housing.gif

The always thoughtful Maxed Out Mama has been on a "road trip" ;

What this looks like on the ground is that housing seems generally on a downward trend, but the real change is what is happening in stores. The contrast between parking lots filled with very nice large vehicles and customers sifting carefully through aisles is quite remarkable. Food pricing, especially, seems to be bonking around like a ping-pong ball. This is a sign of very severe inflation moving through the system. No matter what happens, in normal times you just will not see prices for frozen food items doubling in a matter of a month or two, but that is what I saw in several stores. The best run seem to be trying to keep something on sale, and I noticed a real shift in brand shelving, especially on frozen items.

One of the big surprises was in Bucks County, PA, which borders Mercer County in NJ. In the slightly outlying portions of Bucks, a whole lot of small commercial property (storefronts and land) was on sale. A lot of empty stores. Closed or closing dealerships. Big price drops on services, such as labor at auto dealerships and office visits for some medical providers.
[...]

Up and down the East Coast, restaurants seemed to be feeling the pressure. Fast food restaurants are definitely moving more towards more low-price options on menus. There is some competition emerging in gas prices at concentrations of gas stations. I talked to what looked like senior staff members when I could, and they confirmed that business wasn't great. At banks in off hours, you get kidnapped and dragged into offices if you walk in and ask a teller about CD rates! I started wondering if some of those branches had installed a silent alarm system for sales prospects. It's difficult to escape.

I usually try to buy a lot of the local newspapers. There's a lot of personal stuff for sale. More houses for sale, obviously. Less jobs, relatively. Construction equipment, trucks, boats, campers.

Georgia, aside from being on fire (literally, not metaphorically), seems to be relatively prosperous. There is an awful lot of building still going on in these southern states. When it will stop I don't know. It is possible that the relatively healthy looking Georgia might in part be due to a Florida exodus. Nonetheless, the car dealerships still look pushed. I drove around Valdosta (close to Florida border in central GA) this weekend, and wasn't all that surprised to see a 72 month 0% APR financing sign up on a Chevrolet dealership.

Overall, I was surprised to see more rural areas areas looking healthier than I suspected and more urban/wealthier areas looking more pressured than I expected. Is this a sign of extreme overleverage among the higher income brackets? I don't know, but I am beginning to suspect it.

And this warning from Jeremy Grantham;
"...the man Dick Cheney, plus a lot of other rich people, trusts with his money. Grantham, chairman of Boston firm Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo, has been a voice of caution for years. But he has upped his concerns in his latest letter to shareholders. Grantham says we are now seeing the first worldwide bubble in history covering all asset classes.

Everything is in bubble territory, he says.

Everything.

Given the schemes being hatched under climate change hysteria, I was tempted to title this post "Recession To The Rescue". A natural downturn in the economy may be the best hope we have to wrestle the fate of our long term economic fortunes from the politically motivated media whores and crazy people currently driving the news cycle. Today is the fourth anniversary of George Bush's speech on the USS Abraham Lincoln -- the one Democrats and anti-war activists call the "Mission Accomplished" speech. The crew of the carrier flew the banner because their mission had indeed been accomplished -- they had successfully supported the invasion of Iraq and the fall of Saddam Hussein's government, and were returning to the United States. Instead, everyone has attributed the banner's message to George Bush.

All that proves is that they didn't listen to what he had to say four years ago. As A Better Where To Find points out, Bush hardly communicated anything remotely like "the war is over":Not everyone on the Left was fooled.... May 1, the illegal aliens are marching in SoCal, and it's time once again to say my say:

The Mexicans will be our Palestinians. They'll move here in droves, declare themselves a people, and demand control of the land they've been "peacefully occupying for thousands of years."

That's what I snarked last year. This year, a short, old Mexican woman, probably non-English-speaking and illiterate, was seen with a sign at the L.A. illegal alien march reading "We Are Palestinians." Who the hell told her about Palestinians? How did she make the connection? What convergence was responsible for that?

Ignore at our peril.

"Thought Crimes" Bill

It's so Orwellian, it's frightening. Check out the vote. All Democrats for, all Republicans against. That says it all.

'Hate Crimes' Bill Moving to Full House hat tip Jon
By Susan Jones CNSNews.com

(CNSNews.com) - The House Judiciary Committee passed a "hate crimes" bill Wednesday night, all 23 Democrats in favor, all 17 Republicans opposed. Every Republican attempt to amend the bill was defeated. Critics call it a "thought crimes" bill.

The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007 (H.R. 1592) would expand the federal definition of hate crimes to include violence against a person because of his or her "actual or perceived" sexual orientation or "gender identity."

Under the bill, people who attack others out of "hatred" for their race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability would be committing a federal offense.

I can just see CAIR scampering to get this past.

The bill is now headed to the full House for a vote, probably next week.

Supporters of the bill, including homosexual activists, have described "hate crimes" as a pervasive problem. "The intentional selection and beating or murder of an individual because of who they are terrorizes an entire community and sometimes the nation," the Human Rights Campaign says on its website.

Bullshit, plain and simple. They will wield this bill like a club ........

But conservatives say the bill would punish "thought," since most crimes are motivated by hatred. They say it offers special protection for certain groups.

"Despite what its advocates say, this is not about crime -- it's about special treatment," said the Family Research Council. "HR 1592 would further carve out 'tiers' of victims, putting more importance on crimes committed against a Rosie O'Donnell than against her next-door neighbor."

Others object to the idea of putting homosexuality in the same category as race, an immutable characteristic.

Now here's what i'ts about..........

Silencing Christians?

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) proposed an amendment protecting freedom of religion: "Nothing in this section limits the religious freedom of any person or group under the constitution," the amendment read, but that, too, was defeated.

Conservatives, including Rep. Louis Gohmert (R-Tex.), worry that religious leaders who denounce homosexuality as a sin may be charged with incitement under the legislation.

"By refusing to accept this amendment the Democrats on this committee have proven their purpose, to remove freedom of religion from the U.S. Constitution," said Sheldon.

"It is evident what HR 1592 is about," Sheldon added.

"It is not about homosexuals and cross dressers suffering with no food, shelter or jobs, it is about preventing Bible-believing people and pastors from speaking the truth. It is about punishing them so they will not dare to speak the truth. It is about threatening them with prison so they won't dare speak the truth."

I understand there are implications for criticizing Muslims as well

Although the Republican amendments failed, TVC's Lafferty expressed deep gratitude for the hard work of Republican committee members and their staffs for "bringing forth the truth" and trying to protect freedom of religion in this country.

The Traditional Values Coalition and the Family Research Council -- among others -- say all Americans should be protected equally under the law.

"All Americans should be protected equally under the law" - where have I heard that before?

Hamas Official: Kill All Americans

Pam at Atlas Shrugged had this earlier, but the Jerusalem Post has a fresh report on the latest threat from Palestinians against the West. The Speaker of the Palestinian Authority parliament has called Palestinians to the task of murdering all Americans, in addition to the mission of wiping Jews off the face of the Earth:  This speech took place in April. Coincidentally, that was the same month that we sent $59 million in aid -- to the same Palestinian Authority in which this lunatic serves as Speaker. The US has provided the Palestinians with more than $1.6 billion in aid since Oslo. This is what our money buys. Posted by Ed Morrissey at 07:59 PM | Comments (8)

Chavez Nationalizes Last Of Venezuela’s Oil Fields

May 1st, 2007

From his stalwart fans at Reuters:

(From L to R) Nicaragua’s President Daniel Ortega, Cuba’s Vice President Carlos Lage, President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Evo Morales of Bolivia and Rene Preval of Haiti, April 29, 2007.

Chavez takes control of oil giants

May 1, 2007

PUERTO PIRITU, Venezuela (Reuters) — Venezuela stripped the world’s biggest oil companies of operational control over massive Orinoco Belt crude projects Tuesday, a vital move in President Hugo Chavez’s nationalization drive.

The May Day takeover came exactly a year after Bolivian President Evo Morales, a leftist ally of Chavez, startled investors by ordering troops to seize his country’s gas fields, accelerating Latin America’s struggle to reclaim resources…

The four projects are valued at more than $30 billion and can convert about 600,000 barrels per day (bpd) of heavy, tarry crude into valuable synthetic oil.

U.S. companies ConocoPhillips, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Britain’s BP, Norway’s Statoil and France’s Total agreed to obey a decree to transfer operational control Tuesday, although the OPEC nation complained ConocoPhillips was somewhat resistant.

In Puerto Piritu, near the facilities that refine Orinoco crude, workers prepared early Tuesday to celebrate the takeovers, displaying Venezuelan red, blue and yellow flags and daubing a wall with Chavez’s slogan: “Homeland, Socialism or Death.”

The anti-American leader was also in a festive mood before a rally marking what he called the end of an era of U.S.-prescribed policies that opened up the largest oil reserves in the hemisphere to foreign investment.

Open investment will never return,” he said late Monday to thousands of cheering workers dressed in the signature red of his self-styled leftist revolution at a rally for workers rights.

“We are sealing up that open investment era and burying it deep down in the Orinoco oil reserve,” he added…

The man who calls Cuban leader Fidel Castro his mentor has vowed to take at least 60 percent of the projects, radicalizing his policies as he rules by decree and politicizes the army, state oil company and judiciary.

He is also quickly nationalizing power utilities and the country’s biggest telephone company…

And we also have these glad tidings from his fans at the Associated Press:

Chavez: Venezuela to pull out of IMF, World Bank

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez announced Monday he would formally pull Venezuela out of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, a largely symbolic move because the nation has already paid off its debts to the lending institutions.

“We will no longer have to go to Washington nor to the IMF nor to the World Bank, not to anyone,” said the leftist leader, who has long railed against the Washington-based lending institutions.

Chavez said he wanted to formalize Venezuela’s exit from the two bodies “tonight and ask them to return what they owe us.”

Venezuela recently repaid its debts to the World Bank five years ahead of schedule, saving $8 million. It paid off all its debts to the IMF shortly after Chavez first took office in 1999. The IMF closed its offices in Venezuela late last year.

Chavez made the announcement a day after telling a meeting of allied leaders that Latin America overall would be better off without the U.S.-backed World Bank or IMF. He has often blamed their lending policies for perpetuating poverty…

But we also have this from the Miami Herald, whose readers have seen it all before:

Exasperated by Chávez, more Venezuelans leave

BY STEVEN DUDLEY

Tue, May. 01, 2007

There wasn’t one particular event that made Arturo Araque decide to leave Venezuela with his wife and two children. It was an accumulation of President Hugo Chávez’s politics, increasing crime and growing economic insecurity.

“My sense is that we’re trapped with this man in power,” Araque told The Miami Herald. “I doubt that Venezuela will have another government anytime soon.”

Araque, 38, an industrial designer has joined a growing wave of Venezuelans trying to move out of this Andean nation of 26 million people, with the largest oil deposits outside the Middle East.

U.S. embassy officials say inquiries for U.S. visas rose by one-third from March 2006 to March of this year, and requests to obtain U.S. passports — mostly by people claiming to be sons and daughters of U.S. citizens — have doubled over the past two years. Inquiries for Canadian visas are up 69 percent since last year, officials at that embassy say.

Venezuelans overwhelmed recent job fairs held here by Canada and Australia, and early morning lines of visa seekers routinely wrap around the Portuguese, Italian and Spanish embassies.

While their desired destinations vary, they share a common theme: They will leave behind relatives and broken dreams, and they do not know when they will return.

“It’s an adventure. No one guarantees that you’ll get work,” Araque said. “[But] there’s no economic stability here.”

While upper-class Venezuelans have been trickling out for years, the exodus appears to have stepped up after Chávez’s resounding electoral victory in December secured him another six-year term. The president has since ramped up his divisive rhetoric and began purging the government, his political party and even the military of anyone who is not aboard his project for “21st Century socialism.”

‘At all levels, it is required . . . to raise the flag that says ‘fatherland, socialism or death,”’ the president told a military audience last month, adapting a phrase from one of his mentors, Fidel Castro. “If anyone doesn’t feel comfortable with this, it’s better they retire from the [military] service.”

Ruth Capriles is among those Chávez opponents who went from the ballot box to the ticket counter after the president’s landslide reelection in December.

‘“After that, I realized we’re not going to be able to get rid of him,” said Capriles, who moved to Florida a month ago and now lives in Miramar. “I finally reached a point when I decided there was nothing else left to do but leave.” …

Happy May Day, everyone!

Especially, Hillary.

US oil companies are forced to risk doing business in unstable countries because liberals prevent us from drilling in much of the US. Caribou mean more to the Dumbocrats than your gasoline bill. Mexico is drilling off California about a foot over the US border; if we won’t get the oil we’ll have to pay other countries to do so on our behalf.

Photos From May Day’s Illegal Aliens Rights Rallies

May 2nd, 2007

In an amazing development, we are getting some less than flattering photographs of yesterday’s Law Day May Day "immigrants’ rights" demonstrators from the wire services:

And what is perhaps still more shocking, the wire service are even carrying a few photographs of those who oppose amnesty for illegal aliens:

Granted these pictures are mixed in with the hundreds of photos that portray the illegal aliens undocumented immigrants as hardworking, American-loving patriots who really just want a chance to keep doing all the real work in this country:

They are just kidding with all the Che Guevara and Zapata stuff.

DIRTY COAL, clean air?

There are at least a dozen proposals on Capitol Hill for sequestering all the carbon from coal burning, and the Senate Energy Committee began hearings last month on how to refocus research on the problem. It’s a challenge that has captured the attention of engineers across the country who hope to perfect a clean-coal technology that could provide climate-friendly energy for hundreds of years at modest cost.

“Coal has to be in our energy mix, because of its value for society and its importance to the country,” said Mark Gray, vice president for engineering services at American Electric Power, which recently announced three projects to capture carbon. “We have enough coal for anywhere from 200 to 450 years.”

We should also be working on producing liquid fuels from coal economically. Replacing oil with coal would be a good thing. It's certainly possible, but it's not easy.

UPDATE: Here's more on turning coal to gasoline. At current gas prices it's starting to look good.

A Right To Adult Incest?

When I first wrote about the Supreme Court's decision to strike down a sodomy law in the case of Lawrence v Texas, I warned that the basis of the decision -- a privacy right to sexual conduct between consenting adults -- would produce a wide range of mischief in subsequent decisions. I noted that polygamy, prostitution, and adult incest could be justified under such reasoning, and that although the law in question in Lawrence was indeed foolish and unwise, it did not violate the Constitution. Many CQ readers initially scoffed at this warning -- which is OK, because I actually enjoy scoffing -- but in November, polygamists began organizing challenges to the legal ban using Lawrence as a template.

Today, Jeff Jacoby reports at the Boston Globe that we should prepare ourselves for cases involving adult incest, too:

When the justices, voting 6-3, did in fact declare it unconstitutional for any state to punish consensual gay sex, the dissenters echoed [former Senator Rick] Santorum's point. "State laws against bigamy, same-sex marriage, adult incest, prostitution, masturbation, adultery, fornication, bestiality, and obscenity are . . . called into question by today's decision," Justice Antonin Scalia wrote for the minority. Now, Time magazine acknowledges: "It turns out the critics were right."

Time's attention, like the BBC's, has been caught by the legal battles underway to decriminalize incest between consenting adults. An article last month by Time reporter Michael Lindenberger titled "Should Incest Be Legal?" highlights the case of Paul Lowe, an Ohio man convicted of incest for having sex with his 22-year-old stepdaughter. Lowe has appealed his conviction to the Supreme Court, making Lawrence the basis of his argument. In Lawrence, the court had ruled that people "are entitled to respect for their private lives" and that under the 14th Amendment, "the state cannot demean their existence or control their destiny by making their private sexual conduct a crime." If that was true for the adult homosexual behavior in Lawrence, why not for the adult incestuous behavior in the Ohio case? ...

Your reaction to the prospect of lawful incest may be "Ugh, gross." But personal repugnance is no replacement for moral standards. For more than 3,000 years, a code of conduct stretching back to Sinai has kept incest unconditionally beyond the pale. If sexual morality is jettisoned as a legitimate basis for legislation, personal opinion and cultural fashion are all that will remain. "Should Incest Be Legal?" Time asks. Expect more and more people to answer yes.

Time Magazine reported in the article linked above that

It turns out the critics were right. Plaintiffs have made the decision the centerpiece of attempts to defeat state bans on the sale of sex toys in Alabama, polygamy in Utah and adoptions by gay couples in Florida. So far the challenges have been unsuccessful. But plaintiffs are still trying, even using Lawrence to challenge laws against incest.

The trick will be to get the Supreme Court to apply the Lawrence standard at all. They may avoid it by declaring that the state has a legitimate interest in keeping siblings or other close blood relations from conceiving -- but in that case, would the sterility of one partner void the law banning incest? That state interest would not apply in one of the pending cases in which a man had a sexual relationship with his adult stepdaughter, someone outside the limits of consanguinuity.

That state interest -- avoiding strange genetic variations -- would also not apply to polygamy and polyamory among adults. Polygamy and polyamory as practiced in secret have plenty of other social ills tied to it, but openly practiced among adults, those would not necessarily follow. The same would be true of prostitution, although the state could argue that it has a valid interest in controlling the spread of venereal diseases. Where prostitution is legal, however, the state and the industry require frequent health screens to avoid it and also require "safe sex" in all instances.

In the end, the honest and real community interest in these laws are moral -- and Lawrence removed that as a basis for law.

The dissenters were right. Based on the logic of their reasoning, the Supreme Court in Lawrence opened the floodgates for these challenges, and until the Court allows that law can validly reflect a moral consensus of the community without violating an emanation of a penumbra of the Constitution, eventually those challenges will succeed. At some point, this court or a future one will have to overrule Lawrence or have us forego any limitations on sexual practices in our society, regardless of legitimate state interests.

UPDATE: David Schraub notes a curious exception to incest laws in Rhode Island, and takes issue with Jacoby's Sinai reference. In Jacoby's defense, I believe he meant it in a general sense to reflect on the long tradition of legal sanctions against incest, and not that we should continue them just because they appear in the Bible.

"I was one of many who suspected - correctly - that deviants of all stripes would use Lawrence as a legal excuse for their perversions. I recall others - almost all of them libs and champions of "homosexual rights" - pooh-poohing such predictions as alarmist or outright fantasies. They were so eager to remove the legal restrictions against homosexual intercourse that they didn't stop to think that they were opening the floodgates of other practices that even they would (grudgingly) admit are abhorent and should be illegal. Now what do we do?"

Digg this.

WHY I CAN'T TAKE SOCIALISTS SERIOUSLY

A commenter on this earlier post captures the essence of why I can't take these socialist clowns seriously when they talk about "social justice" and all their high-minded idiocy:

hahaha, you can't be serious. I have never seen any of these slogans on signs and I have been to dozens of anti-war and anti-imperialism protests.

"I LOVE NY EVEN MORE WITHOUT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER

NAZI KIKES OUT OF LEBANON

CONDI: I'M FIGHTING FOR WHITEY

BEHEAD THOSE WHO INSULT ISLAM"

This shit is rediculous... no self-respecting socialist or anarchist would walk around holding such hate. Take it from me, I am an anarchist.

And instead of giving us so much shit, maybe you should take this very special day (May Day) to thank all of the anarchists and socialists who faught to secure an eight-hour work day for the labor class here in America.

It's amazing what you discover when you just open a book... you should try it sometime.
Gavin

Instead of taking this May Day to thank those selfless anarchists and socialists who fought for eight-hour work days, I would like to suggest that dimwits like Gavin read Ilya Somin at The Volokh Conspiracy, discussed at The Belmont Club:

A May Day Proposal:
Today is May 1, AKA May Day. May Day began as a holiday for socialists and labor union activists, not just communists. But over time, the date was taken over by the Soviet Union and other communist regimes and used as a propaganda tool to prop up their regimes. I suggest that we instead use it as a day to commemorate those regimes' millions of victims. The authoritative Black Book of Communism estimates the total at 80 to 100 million dead, greater than that caused by all other twentieth century tyrannies combined. We appropriately have a Holocaust Memorial Day. It is equally appropriate to commemorate the victims of the twentieth century's other great totalitarian tyranny. And May Day is the most fitting day to do so.

When are you going to face reality, Gavin? YOUR reality. The one you would conveniently like to forget, which is that YOUR ideology is perhaps the greatest con ever perpetrated on the human species. When are you going to face the truth about the fact that YOUR ideology was responsible for the deaths and enslavement of millions around the world in the last century and is setting a record pace in this new one. When are you going to face the truth that it is YOUR ideology that gave birth to fascism and open your eyes to the world around you, instead of writing nonsense about imminent fascist states being implemented here? There is more fascism being implemented by people like you at our Univeristies every day than BushMcChimpyHitler is capable of imagining in his wildest dreams of total power.

You think you are so clever, but it is clear you know nothing--nothing about history and nothing about the ideological fantasies you promote.

Obviously, you are just another mindless robot who is only capable of mouthing the party line. When I think of a world controlled by the likes of someone so clueless and out of touch with reality, I worry for the human species.

Let me tell you something, Gavin. I am perfectly serious. If you bothered to click on the links provided you would see they go directly to the pictures of demonstrators like yourself. You think these people with their ridiculous, laughable signs aren't serious? You think groups like Code Pink and ANSWER take any responsibility at all for the consequences of the sick ideology they promote so cavalierly and foolishly?

Whoever coined the term "useful idiot" was being far too kind. You people aren't useful idiots--you are accomplices to murder.

In short, I have nothing nice to say about people like you, Gavin. Frankly, you make me sick. You tell me to read a book? How dare you, you ignorant moron. Why don't you go read some history--the kind that hasn't been doctored by your comrades, preferably. Self-respecting socialist or anarchist? The terms are mutually contradictory and utterly oxymoronic.

I personally hold idiots like you responsible for the incalculable harm that socialism. communism, and all other totalitarian ideologies have wrought on this planet.

I wonder how you can possibly live with so much blood on your hands?

ENDA common sense

With the Democrats in control of Congress, it was inevitable that a new push to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) would occur. ENDA would add "sexual orientation" to race, sex, age, etc. as a basis for a federal prohibition against employment discrimination, in both the public and private sectors. In its latest incarnation, the legislation would also outlaw discrimination based on "gender identity," defined as "the gender-related identity, appearance, or mannerisms or other gender-related characteristics of an individual, with or without regard to the individual's designated sex at birth."

As Roger Clegg explains, ENDA has always been a bad idea, and the current version is even worse.

Employers are unlikely to fire or mistreat gay employees who are performing their job acceptably -- the cost, inconvenience, and replacement risks associated with firing such individuals or not making them welcome all provide an incentive not to discriminate. And unlike blacks and females, employers rarely are in a position to discriminate against gays in hiring because they don't know the sexual orienation of applicants (although, as defined in ENDA, I suppose they might be able to figure out "gender identity" in some cases).

That's not to say that gays never experience employment discrimination. But absent evidence that such discrimination is widespread enough to make it difficult for gays to compete in the job market as a whole, the justification is lacking for (in Clegg's words) "the inevitable specious suits, the enforcement expenses, the dubious regulations - and the important costs of enacting yet another federal law of dubious constitutionality that violates free-market, freedom of association, and federalism principles."

As a lawyer who sometimes defends employment law suits, though, I suspect that ENDA cases would be interesting to defend.

The pill and cancer: what women should know

Silicon Insider on Digg.com Melee

At ABC News Silicon Insider, Michael Malone has an article about the Digg.com revolt that acknowledges the thuggish actions of Digg’s leftist “bury brigade” against sites like LGF: The First Amendment vs. Patents in Web 2.0.

In case you don’t know, Digg.com is a hugely popular Web site, mostly for young people, in which users post news stories from a vast array of sources, and their brethren either vote to keep them on the site or remove them. Stories that stay on the site move up and down the queue based upon reader interest.

That’s the simple explanation, but as with all Web 2.0 community sites, it has quickly grown much more complicated than that in the last year. For example, Digg was originally focused upon science and tech stories, but has grown to include everything from entertainment to politics. And that in turn has brought with it a whole host of problems. For example, there are reports of companies and politicians buying their stories onto Digg by secretly paying for votes.

Worse, users have learned to use the “bury” feature, originally designed to get rid of spam postings, to crush stories with political perspectives (usually conservative) that don’t match their own. The most notable victim of this kind of burying is one of the blogosphere’s most popular sites, Little Green Footballs.

But the biggest problem with Digg is not the business itself, which is an impressive creation, but its community. One of the things we’re learning about the Web 2.0 world is that all communities aren’t alike; when you let millions of anonymous users design your product, you also let them determine your fate. And Digg has put itself in the hands of an army of postadolescents with too much education and too much free time, the age cohort that gets its news from “The Colbert Report” and holds the anarchistic view that all information should be, in fact, “wants to be,” free.

Nothing wrong with that. Indeed, been there, done that. But now, in my gray-haired middle-age I’ve come to realize that if you are going to create a venue for children to play, someone has to be the grown-up. And that is where Digg blew it.

Public School Madrassa in New York

When I first covered this frightening development here I thought saner, cooler heads would prevail. I was wrong. When I discussed the  Arabic public school opening in NY with Mark  Steyn on my show here and what it would mean, he said--

" it shows how we mischaracterized, we willfully misunderstand Islam. Yes, on the face of it yes Arabic is a language in a sense there is would be no difference between opening a foreign language school - a Spanish language school or a french language school - but in fact Arabic is more than a language. It is explicated the language of Islam so in that sense it is part of the Islamic religious imperial project. Radical Islam advances through the Arabic language. And you go all kinds of places that aren't in the Arab world now like Pakistan, Indonesia, Central Asia, the Balk ins, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Canada and the United States and you will here those Imams preaching in Arabic. Arabic is not just another language like French or Italian, it is the spearhead of an idea logical project that is deeply opposed to the United States."

If you wish to listen to my interview with Mark Steyn, click on this button;

Alicia Colon writes writes today: The Madrassa Plan Is Monstrosity

When I met him a while ago in The New York Sun's offices, Chancellor Joel Klein seemed to be in command of his senses. And Mayor Bloomberg did not become a successful billionaire without having some smarts. So whose insane idea was it to have an Arabic public school in Brooklyn open this September? Are they out of their minds? Have they learned nothing from the Netherlands about the danger of pandering to multiculturalism?

When I first heard of this proposed school, I thought it was a joke. But then I read Daniel Pipes's column about this disguised "madrassa" and discovered who the major principals were. Now I can't dispel this feeling of disbelief and outrage. This proposal is utter madness, considering that five years after September 11, ground zero is still a hole in the ground and we're bending over backwards to appease those sympathetic to individuals who would destroy us again. Smart, really smart....

Read it all.

LIVEBLOGGING: The Middle East Forum put together a small lunch with Itamar Marcus, counter terrorism analyst and the founder and director of Palestinian Media Watch, which studies Palestinian society from a broad range of perspectives by monitoring and analyzing the Palestinian Authority through its media and schoolbooks. The PMW exposes the death culture in Palestinian "society."

Pamela_geller_itamar_marcus

Photographer: Ted Belman, Israpundit

What separates Marcus from other Middle Eastern Arabic translating organizations (ie MEMRI) is  Palestinian society is all they do. What is going on in Palestinian society and only Palestinian society. They were the first to report that Yasser Arafat was saying one thing to English speaking audiences and a completely different thing to the Arab world.

It began in a quest to learn what the Palestinians were saying to their people and more specifically, their children. The Palestinian media is PMW's window to the Palestinian society because it is state controlled so you can determine what the objective is by the propaganda being

Its many reports and studies on summer camps, poetry, schoolbooks, crossword puzzles, religious ideology, women and mothers, children's video clips, and inciting children to 'Shahada" -Martyrdom', have brought the world's attention to many aspects of Palestinian society hidden from the non-Arabic speaking world.d conferences world wide.

In the case of a crossword puzzle, a clue would be  "sea port in Palestine" --  Haifa. The implication that all of Israel is occupied.

Schools reflect a religious battle, an Islamic battle - a battle that will go  on forever

The subject of Marcus's talk was

FROM THE PLO TO HAMAS: IS PALESTINIAN SOCIETY BECOMING ISLAMIST?

In reading the HAMAS CHARTER - it is an Islamic covenant. The Islamic Resistance Movement believes that the land of Palestine is a Palestine (waft) land. Hamas in its own words.

They see blowing Jews up, killing the Jews as a service to humanity.

The differences between Hamas and Fatah could not be more clear.

The Hamas charter has 105 references to  Allah, Fatah none

The Hamas charter has 33 references to the Koran, Fatah none

The Hamas charter has 7 references to Koran , Fatah none

The Hamas charter has 33 quotews from the Koran , Fatah none.

Check out the Palestinian schoolbook. Check out the Palestinian narrative.

Marcus is now showing  video of Abbas saying one to the Palestinian people (we do not and will not recognize Israel) and saying the complete opposite to the English media the same day - with Condi Rice in the region.

Marcus  is showing Palestinian video of their version on official  Palestinian televison that the Jews "created the ovens of the Holocaust." That the Jews "baked the humans. The Jews had blood on his hands."

This package of "killing the Jews" is the same package that Hitler put forth in Mein Kamp.

Hitler packaged it as self defense. Creating a situation that it is self defense to kill Jews.

This exact message of Hitler was put forth today in the  Hamas newspaper "The extermination is good for the benefit of all mankind. Don't blame us - it's our Lord."

Like the Nazis said "we were just taking orders." Hamas too is saying don't blame us, "we are following the Lord's orders."

Suicide terror is  not an act of desperation it is an aspiration.

They still use the blood libel of Al Dura to seduce their children. They have a music video of the small boy running, laughing, going on ferris wheels (there are no ferris wheels in Pali territories) and he is shouting happily, waving to the children calling to them, "I am waving at you not to say goodbye but to follow me."

The Palestinian media run music videos for years , every day glorifying death, and glowingly depicting 72 virgins in white, dancing and prancing in the water waiting for the shaheed.

We, in America, tend to separate Hams and Fatah but they overlap. They are a global Islamic force. They are calling for death to America, death to Israel on both Hamas and Fatah Israel, more here. Marcus said the biggest the west makes is separating Hamas and Fatah. Their goals are the same and they work together. The Islamic brotherhood.

There is a new program on they have starting showing  :mickey Mouse type character to pass on these messages of hate. They use poetry readings to chant death, "Oh Jerusalem we are coming.. "This is a new program - FOX News will be showing portions of it on Sunday, May 6th.

Gotta run to liveblog a UN conference, do me a favor and send PMW a donation now.

President Bush Promises to Veto Homosexual Hate Crime Bill if Passed (Gay-pandering Dems alert)

A Federal Curriculum for Preschoolers--This week exposes the extreme direction of our current U.S. Congress. Within hours of each other, Congress will be voting on both a federal curriculum for preschoolers requiring gender/diversity/ training, and they will vote on the dangerous Hate Crimes Bill to add special federal civil rights protections for homosexuals, bisexuals, and transgenders. It's a stark picture of where the new majority's priorities are.

DemCong Pushing For Thought Crimes Legislation

by Emperor Misha I (17 Views)

zzzzzz...zzzzzz...yawnyawnbark?bark?yip!yip!woof!woof! (2 votes, average: 10 out of 10)
Loading ... Loading ...

Thanks to LC MuscleDaddy for forwarding this urgent reminder to us.

Guess what the DemCong have been up to while everybody was focused on them holding our troops hostage with their Surrender Act of 2007?

Fresh off a vote last week urging our abrupt surrender in Iraq, and just hours removed from coming up 62 votes short in an attempt to override the president’s veto, Democrats will use the House floor this afternoon to slide through legislation conceived of, written by, and moved in consultation with a key segment of their special interest constituency.

The bill, harmlessly coined “the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act” by House Democrats, would create a nebulous new class of criminals based not on the things they do, but on the basis of what they may or may not have been thinking while they committed the crime. Even worse, the legislation takes the unprecedented step of declaring some victims of heinous crimes not as worthy of justice as others, simply because they don’t happen to fall into a special category of favored status.

But as we’ve seen in cases from San Francisco to Sweden, the actual application of “thought crime” laws is hardly restricted to criminals. Take for example the 2004 arrest of 11 people in Philadelphia simply for holding signs and reading passages out of the Bible during a gay pride festival downtown.

Though by all indications their protests were conducted peaceably, and with proper restraint, these men and women were forcibly detained, unceremoniously dragged down to the police station, and eventually charged with a total of three separate felonies and five misdemeanors

Read the whole thing.

You may think this “no big deal”, after all it is with the best of intentions and it’s not like something like a roving Thought Police could happen here, right?

Wrong.

I’ve seen the consequences of this slippery slope, I’ve lived the consequences of it. I’ve seen people charged with nothing more than saying in public what had been deemed “unacceptable speech.” Oh, and what’s deemed thusly is always decided upon “with the best of intentions.” To “protect the innocent”, “fight hatred (as if one can fight hatred by outlawing words)”, blah, blah, blah.

Freedom of Speech is worthless if you only keep speech free that you already agree with. Your true understanding of the concept is measured by how good you are at keeping speech you disagree with, even the speech you hate, free.

There are no “degrees of freedom of speech.” You either have it, or you don’t. Freedom to speak only that which has been approved isn’t freedom. It’s slavery and tyranny of the mind, it is a sword hanging over your head, kept there for only as long as the thoughts you hold are deemed “acceptable.” Chains lined with the velvet of “good intentions.” After all, who could possibly have anything against outlawing speech that hurts, speech that insults, speech that offends?

People who understand what freedom of speech is, that’s who.

If this Bill becomes law, then our new overlords might as well prepare a cell for me right away, because I will not comply. I didn’t escape one tyranny of the mind only to sit by and watch the last, best hope of Freedom be turned into yet another. Those who would try to force me will find me a distinctly unruly subject. You can lock me away, you can fine me into poverty and you can kill me, but you cannot chain my soul, you cannot put my mind on a leash and, if you try, you will soon find that putting those chains on me will be a great deal more unpleasant than anything that you could possibly imagine.

You will have my compliance only in death, and I will not be going to Hell alone.

I have told you, I have told my Congressmen, now go tell yours.

Thatisall.

House passes 'thought crimes' bill 237 to 180

Because waiting for the “FAIRNESS DOCTRINE” to regain currency just takes too damn long

Dan Riehl has the story of some Virginia legislators who are putting pressure on four Virginia radio stations to drop libertarian talk-show host Neal Boortz’s show over comments he made in the wake of the VT shootings (Boortz attributed the fact that students didn’t fight back to the “wussification of America,” which he blamed on the left-wing nannystate).

The radio stations reported that they received very little in the way of listener complaint.  Which means that if the market won’t stifle speech critical of “progressive” social policy, it’s up to the progressives in government to step in and apply pressure.

Of course, applying pressure—as with the case of Democratic Sens. Salazar and Menendez over the Burns PBS WWII documentary—doesn’t rise to the level of official First Amendment breach (after all, no “law” has been passed to shut Boortz up), but it certainly straddles that line.  In the case of PBS, Senator Salazar, you’ll remember—after wringing out some PC concessions—has promised to keep a “watchful eye” on the public broadcaster, as well as have a word with the outfit’s president.

Which is the kind of Orwellian pronouncement “progressives” are always sussing out of remarks from the Bushies, using the kinds of “close reading” techniques that give rise to all sort of paranoid conspiracy theories.

Meanwhile, they casually ignore the obvious instances of Big Brother asserting power over free expression, presumably because it’s being done to shore up the power of identity politics—which is a necessary structural plank in any progressive ship of state.

I was critical of Condi Rice when she noted that Don Imus should be fired for his remarks about the Rutgers women’s basketball team—not because she isn’t entitled to her opinion, but rather because powerful people in the government, when they make such decrees, have undue influence, and their remarks can be seen as having a chilling effect on free speech.  I was equally critically of Ari Fleischer for his remarks aimed at Bill Maher, who shortly after 911 noted that the terrorists who flew planes into the Twin Towers weren’t cowards—particularly when judged against the metric of lobbing missiles at Aspirin factories.

In this case in Virginia, the legislators are operating in an official capacity, affording their calls for Boortz’s show to be dropped the imprimatur of their elected offices.

This is not, technically, censorship, as Riehl argues. But as with the Salazar / Menendez gambit, it certainly violates the spirit, if not the letter, of the Constitutional Right to free speech.

Foot-washing at airports!  What next, legalized female mutilation?

By The Beach Girl

Upon reading “Mosque and State: Inseparable” posted here and at Fighting in the Shade, I decided to go for the “gold” ring and include my rather irate and irreverent post, Foot-washing at airports!  What next, legalized female mutilation?.  My sometimes outrageous titles come from sheer screaming, frothing at the mouth, disgust with our many ‘oh-doesn’t-Granny-Nancy-look-so-precious-in-her-silk-hijab-from-Sacks’ politicians that I can hardly stand the dementia they are clearly exhibiting.

Institutionalize them quick!  Oh, they are institutionalized - it is called Congress, both the House of Representatives and the Senate - the “greatest deliberative body on earth”.  The hubris!  The arrogance!

I’m telling you, it is all a “hang-over” from their Haight-Ashbury days in good, old San Francisco where they flounced around in dirty night-shirts and wilted “flowers in their hair” catching STDs that arguably are now making their mark as the brains of these “fine” folk get more addled by the second.

We cannot afford their illness; goodness knows we are forced to financially support them and their dimwitted pronouncements; but the United States of America, and certainly including Congress, cannot afford to become their “nursing home for aging Dhimmicats.” [Folks paying tribute to Islam.]

My post has been included here after I read “Mosque and State: Inseparable” also linked above.  My post follows:

___________________
I just heard a bit about CAIR’s demand for airport authorities to provide pools or foot-washing facilities so Muslims wouldn’t have to wash their feet in sinks at airports.  A religious requirement it seems. Foot washing basin at MCTC.  [Maybe CAIR isn’t up to this one.  Don’t know for sure.]

Well, why not just legalize female mutilation so young Muslim girls can be sexually molested, I mean mutilated as their clitoris is sliced off.  Holy ___!  What crimes and hideous acts are still being carried on in the name of God!

To me, it is bad enough that the practitioners of Santarea can sell chickens, pigeons, and other small animals for the blood ritual of slicing the animal’s throat and dripping the blood upon the head, shoulders and body of young pre-adolescent or early adolescent men but when or if the Supreme Court sides with Islamists and orders airport managers to provide foot-washing stations for Muslims in public places paid for by our money, we’re on our way to Sharia hell, oops, Law.  Every concession brings us one step closer to Islamic Law being imposed upon us one bidet at a time.

But then maybe that’s okay as long as the Japanese get Shinto Shrines where they can light incense and candles; Catholics get confessionals; and the Lord only knows what the Baptists, Pentacostals, et al will want.  And let’s not forget the snakes revered by some…

But hey, we’ve got abortions for minors without parental notification easily covering up rapes and molestation and/or incest, so why not legalize mutilating young Muslim girls too!  And then we can just make it a law for all of our young girls.  We’re letting them take the morning-after pill as birth control made in China.  Who the heck knows what that pill may be doing to them genetically speaking?  We know what the Chinese manufacturer/food processor did to our pet food.  Can anyone say, “chemical warfare” test run?

When immigrants come to our nation, they are expected to live by our laws, not transform our culture and our laws into the very third world ghettos or fossilized practices they have left.  I say, “Stay in your own backward culture and leave mine along.  We are perfectly capable of destroying ourselves without your help.”

Good news, the foot washing stations are open to use by all of us, Airport Debunks Islamic Footwashing Myth[search foot washing airports], we don’t have to be practitioners of the Religion of Peace and we are not restricted to just washing our feet in these foot-washing facilities.  Great!  If we can just revert to outdoor toilets, think of all the energy and water we’ll save.  Of course, a decrease in hygiene will ensue bringing perhaps plague and death but we’re over populated anyway, right?

Anyone besides me feel like we have collectively lost our minds not to mention any common sense we may have ever had?
_________________

It is said that God helps/looks after fools and drunks.  I sure hope He will look after the United States of America.  Once Sharia Law - one concession at a time - takes over, it will be “The Islamic Republic of the North American Union” for us all, Catholicism, Santerea, and all the other “religions” real or imagined combined will be relegated to inferior status and taxed on their religious practice [I think Thomas Jefferson said a few words against this practice.].  The good (?) news is that our Islamic overlords won’t kill us all.  To support a parasite, one needs a host and that would be me, you, and my dog named Blue.  We pay the tax; we work to keep everything running; and Islamists are elevated to their rightful place of superiority.  For the rest of us, it is the Dark Ages once again.

You’d hope we would have learned a few things from history, but no - we don’t teach history any longer!  I’m still waiting for some bright soul to declare that Islam - certainly as practiced by the screaming anti-American, anti-Western Civilization imams amongst us - is no religion at all but a political ideology such as Marxism, you fill in the “ism” just dressed up in Mommy’s robes but with the age-old human drive for power and control of the world.

See Turkey defends against Islamic Caliphate.  Turkey’s Army stands in defense of Turkey’s secular government.  Who will protect our “separation of church and state” and defend us from Sharia Law?  The Islamists must be laughing themselves silly at how easy it is for them to get their nose under the tent.  Who needs terrorist bombings when we can be overthrown by our own laws?

The Chief’s a political pogue / dumbass, he’s already muttered the words leaving his officers out to dry, even before all the fact are in. And despite his commenting on video taken from overhead that plainly shows the “Pace” tactics the rioters were engaging in - they had three lines / waves - a wedge led by a female, driving into the police skirmish line as deliberate victims; a second line of videographers to ‘capture the police brutality’ and a third line at the rear that was hurling rocks and full water bottles at the police.
It’s the same tactics of the LLLeftist G-8 protesters, the SanFran pogues, and akin to what the Palis do surrounding their gunmen with children. This kind of staged shit happens at EVERY anarchist / marxist -attended event.
And the masked group that engaged in this matter with the LAPD were earlier hanging around under a FMLN banner - Salvadoran marxists
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FMLN

There were two separate events in L.A. on May Day - both stuffed with hispanic socialists, but the midday event at City Hall was the ‘peaceful’ one, Families, American Flags, etc.
The MacArthur Park event was all along meant to be a more radical confrontational event. And the FMLN etc were there to draw the very incident they did, just as the fucking Flying Imams did.

My coverage of last year’s Illegal Alien support rally includes some coverage of MacArthur park - http://www.rayra.net/Political_Coverage/Uno_de_Mayo/Uno_MacArthur_Park/uno_macarthur_park.html
The park is split in half by a through road. The northern third is a beaten-bare improvised soccer field and where the stage / speakers do their thing. It’s out of frame to the rear of the middle pics in that page, beyond the lake and crowd of white t-shirts. That’s where Tuesday’s clash took place.

This entire matter is a staged advance by the LLLiberal-Victim Industry.

For instance, we know that liberals favor affirmative action, although at the same time we also know they like to say that where race is concerned, they’re the ones who are colorblind.

A rare serious post - ccwbass's take on the Big Debate

Utterly. Freaking. Pointless. Tonight was about entertainment. It was about killing 90 minutes of time and selling some advertisement.

My dream debate format? Well, once the field has been winnowed down:

Republican vs. Republican debates:

[1] Several debates can be had, but I want each debate to center on a specific topic (or range of closely-related topics).

The War against radical Islam
The economy
The Supreme Court and Constitution
Education
The separation of church and state
Health Care
The definition of "conservative"

. . . just to name a few possibilities.

[2] Kick the journalists out - at least as the guys who ask the questions. What I want is a panel made of experts in the subject at hand. In fact, imagine the candidates being grilled about the War on Terror by a panel of non-journalists. How about some retired military people, equal numbers of pro vs. con individuals? Toss in left and right think tank guys, maybe a couple of journalists who have been embedded with the troops, and millbloggers and their anti-war counterparts; but otherwise no MSM, save perhaps a token MSM personality to act as a kind of moderator.

What I'm imagining here is something akin to a PhD. examination.

[3] Which means we need to give the candidates time to either hang themselves, or prove themselves. 90 minutes for 10 guys? Absolutely stupid and pointless, and good for nothing but generating a few days' worth of soundbites, which helps the networks and blogs, but isn't exactly a value-added exercise for the voting public. I want these debates - let's not even call them debates; let's call them examinations - to give each candidate at least an hours' worth of talking time. Three candidates? Three hours. Longer, if they're willing. (Screw the networks and their programming problems. This is the age of radio, live-streaming on the 'net and instant video capture.)

Just the proposition of such a debate would scare away the poseurs.

Republican vs Democrat debates

Same thing. One Topic per debate; at least an hour for each candidate, and the journlists have to sit back and let the panel do the grilling.

It'll never, ever happen. But a guy can dream.
