Question for any HEINLEIN fans...
Amazon ^ | 7/16/2002 | GunRunner

Posted on 07/16/2002 2:08:59 PM PDT by GunRunner

I just purchased Time Enough For Love and was about to start reading it until I read on Amazon that it is actually the 3rd in a trilogy about Lazurus Long that started with Stranger In a Strange Land, then The Number of the Beast. Is this true? Or does this book stand alone?

Thanks for any help.

You can read it by itself, although I recommend reading the others first.

Mr. Snowy is a big Heinlein fan. He says the following..

Stranger In a Strange land
Time Enough for Love
The Number of the Beast

That is the actual order, though they weren't written as a trilogy. Each can stand alone.

Actually Lazarus Long comes from Methuselah's Children, and is nearly unrelated to the other titles. That you have a sequel is incorrect. Time Enough for Love is real late Heinlein though, fantastic and lascivious.

My favorite Heinlein book. Feel free to continue reading it. It stands on its on--although it does expand upon an earlier short.

What about the uncut version of Stranger in a Strange Land? I read the original, and have thought about rereading it. I just don't know if I should get the new version.

GREAT book! An excellent book to share with a wife/husband. Especially the story about Lazarus and Dora.

I can't say. Hopefully another Freeper will have a recommendation as to whether the uncut is worth it. Bump for that reason...

If you're going to read Time Enough for Love, try to shoehorn To Sail Beyond the Sunset somewhere in there. It deals with an important character in Time and other Heinlein works.

Time enough for love stands on its own. However, Number of the beast ties together Time enough for Love, Stranger in a strange Land, and The Monn is a harsh Mistress

Where does The Cat Who Walks Through Walls fit in there? I thought the first half was some of the best Heinlein I had read, the last half some of the worst. I got the feeling I had missed something important somewhere along the way though . . . maybe some of the books you've mentioned?

I've read most of them, but not all. I reread Stranger in a Strange Land about a year ago. It seemed dated...or perhaps it was me. I'm an old lady now, and what was once daring, insightful, and bold seemed naive. Sigh....

It's been years since I read Time Enough for Love, although I have read it many times. I hesitate to reread it now because I don't want to feel about it the same way I felt about Stranger.

Personally, I thought Stranger in a Strange Land was not very good, in spite of its mild eroticism. On the other hand, Starship Troopers was not too bad.

Stand alone book.. "Time Enough" chronicles the life
of Maureen, a red-headed hottie..but is continued elsewhere..
I failed to see "The cat who walks through walls"" as
Maureen has a part in that one, too...

It is from Maureen that I get the word "mayn't"...
