The Story of Independence Day
and America's Birthday

In April 1775 as the King's troops advanced on Concord Massachusetts Paul Revere would sound the alarm that "The British are coming, the British are coming" as he rode his horse through the late night streets. The battle of Concord and its "shot heard round the world" would mark the unofficial beginning of the colonies war for Independence.

The following May the colonies again sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. For almost a year the congress tried to work out its differences with England, again without formally declaring war.

By June 1776 their efforts had become hopeless and a committee was formed to compose a formal declaration of independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. Thomas Jefferson was chosen to write the first draft which was presented to the congress on June 28. After various changes a vote was taken late in the afternoon of July 4th. Of the 13 colonies, 9 voted in favor of the Declaration, 2 - Pennsylvania and South Carolina voted No, Delaware undecided and New York abstained.

To make it official John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence. It is said that John Hancock signed his name "with a great flourish" so "King George can read that without spectacles!."

The following day copies of the Declaration were distributed. The first newspaper to print the Declaration was the Pennsylvania Evening Post on July 6, 1776. On July 8th the Declaration had its first public reading in Philadelphia's Independence Square. Twice that day the Declaration was read to cheering crowds and pealing church bells. Even the bell in Independence Hall was rung. The "Province Bell" would later be renamed "Liberty Bell" after its inscription -

Proclaim Liberty Throughout All the Land Unto All the Inhabitants Thereof

And although the signing of the Declaration was not completed until August, the 4th of July has been accepted as the official anniversary of United States independence. The first Independence Day celebration took place the following year - July 4 1777. By the early 1800s the traditions of parades, picnics, and fireworks were established as the way to celebrate America's birthday. And although fireworks have been banned in most places because of their danger, most towns and cities usually have big firework displays for all to see and enjoy.

TAOS, N.M. (AP) - Academy Award-winning actress Julia Roberts married her cameraman boyfriend Daniel Moder early Thursday at her 40-acre estate outside Taos.

The wedding marks Roberts' second trip down the aisle. The star of "Runaway Bride" and "My Best Friend's Wedding" was married for 21 months to country and western singer Lyle Lovett.

The darkness of the cool New Mexico morning concealed the details of Roberts' wedding but provided the perfect backdrop for the midnight ceremony.

"Julia Roberts and Daniel Moder married during a midnight ceremony before family and friends at their home in New Mexico," Roberts' publicist, Marcy Engelman, told The Associated Press about an hour after the ceremony.

Engelman declined to give any details about the couple's nuptials, the bride's attire or the guest list, saying, "This is all we're going to release at this time."

A big white tent was seen on Roberts' estate Wednesday afternoon and the town was crowded with photographers and reporters, some of whom camped outside her gate.

A pitch-black sky was dotted with millions of sparkling stars as music and laughter could be heard coming from Roberts' home into the early morning hours.

The rumors heated up this week when The Daily Mail of London reported that 50 guests were being flown from Los Angeles to New Mexico for some sort of celebration at Roberts' estate. The paper said George Clooney, Roberts' co-star on "Ocean's 11," was to be among them and that invitees were to wear white linen. [I wonder if any of the groom's family showed up. The witch is a control freak, who would have nerve enough to tell quests what to wear to your wedding?!]

"Pretty Woman" (1990) remains Roberts' biggest hit, with a domestic gross of $178.4 million. Her other $100 million hits include "Notting Hill," and "Erin Brockovich," for which she received a best-actress Oscar in 2001.

Roberts' love life has been tabloid fodder for years. She broke up with actor Benjamin Bratt last year after dating him for nearly four years. He went on to marry actress Talisa Soto in April.

Roberts broke up with Kiefer Sutherland in 1991 on the eve of their wedding. She also was linked to Jason Patric, Dylan McDermott, Matthew Perry and Liam Neeson.

Any bets on how long this will last?

I'd say husbands in hollyweird should be safe for about six months or so.

What's the skank's longest "relationship" so far? I have pantyhose that have survived longer, I bet.

The pair sent out invitations to a small group of family and friends that simply read, "Come celebrate our Independence Day on the green grass under the stars with the dogs and horses." ....

But the 34-year-old actress was spotted yesterday stocking up on fruits and vegetables at her local grocery store. "I was shocked to see her, because the last thing you expect a blushing bride to do is shop for groceries," said shopper Tammy Lavieson.

"She wasn't in long, and only went to the fruit and vegetable aisle. She had two bags, but I didn't dare ask her about the wedding."

The invitation says the theme of the party is " 'Midsummer Night's Dream'-ish meets ‘Great Gatsby,' like, combined with Wild West Bohemian."

As for attire, "Think linen, try seersucker, dawn sweet-summer hats. Free yourself from black. Look fabulous staying cool."

In lieu of gifts, the pair ask guests to "bring along a lively/lovely addition to our garden." NY Post

Isn't that the same as a gift?

A white tent is visible on the property of actress Julia Roberts, Wednesday, July 3, 2002, in Arroyo Seco outside Taos, N.M. Amid speculation as to whether a wedding or merely a Fourth of July bash is being planned at Roberts' 40-acre estate, locals weren't saying too much about Roberts, whom they seem to have adopted as their own. Be the life of the party, grease the palm of the town's Water Management official and bring her a water permit!

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
Thursday, August 30, 2001

"Report Taken for Assault on Photo Journalist"

Woodland Hills: On Tuesday, August 28, 2001, at 12:05 PM, West Valley officers responded to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon suspect in the 4900 block of Reforma Road. Francis Griffin identified himself as a photo journalist who was at the location to take photographs of Daniel Moder and his family as they returned from the funeral services for Mr. Moder's mother. Mr. Griffin stated that Daniel Moder is the boyfriend of actress Julia Roberts.

Mr. Griffin stated he took several photos of the Moder family which angered Mr. Moder. Other photographers were present at that time, however they left, leaving Griffin alone in his car. At approximately 11:15 a.m., Mr. Griffin saw a rock land near his car which came from the direction of Mr. Moder’s backyard. Griffin did not see who threw the rock but then saw Mr. Moder throw a half brick at him a minute later. The brick missed Griffin, but struck the side of his car. Mr. Moder then threw a second half brick at him which landed in the street near his car.

Mr. Moder then got into his car and drove away from the residence. Mr. Griffin called the police to report the incident, but Mr. Moder was no longer present when they arrived at the location.

The investigation is being conducted by detectives from the West Valley Operations Support Division. For more information, please contact Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586. Los Angeles Police Department personnel will not be conducting on-camera interviews regarding this incident.

This press release was prepared by Public Information Officer Guillermo Campos, Media Relations Section, 213-485-3586.

Help! Does anyone have a recipe for Macorni salad? I looked in my cook book, but all they have is hot mac and cheese. Not on a hot day like today. I promised Mudpuppy I'd bring a Macorni salad to her 4th of July party today. Any simple recipes out there?

This is all I could find so far:

Julia Roberts, with new change of image, very affectionate with its fiancè, Daniel Moder, in the celebration that was celebrated after the opening of Ocean's Eleven.

No surprize this guy's a cameraman, he likes being behind it not in front of one. This is from a spanish site.

Well, hey, she did give them the option of seersucker. And "dawn"? Dawn???

My only thoughts are questions.

1)Why do these people bother to get married?

2)Will the ink dry on the marriage license before the divorce papers are served?

3) Why do I not care?

I have a Tuna and Mac salad I love.

Boil a package of shell macaroni, drain and cool.

Chop celery, red onion, carrots. (I use about four good size carrots, 4-5 good sized stalks of celery and one medium red onion.)

Drain a large can of tuna 12oz. or two small cans 6oz.

Toss it all together with mayo! Salt and pepper to taste. YUM!

Cooked macaroni, mayonnaise, a little mustard, chopped celery, parsley, celery seed, salt and pepper, paprika, chopped pickles or sweet pickle relish, boiled eggs ...

Macaroni salad is one of those "kitchen sink" deals - just throw in whatever strikes your fancy!
