I have found out that if JavaScript is disabled for websites with a paywall, you can sometimes get through ok. I do that for a local newspaper. Granted, many times the graphics are all gone, but as long as I can read the article I'm good.

I disabled JavaScript for that website and I viewed the article just fine.

You can also use the web site 12ft to turn off Javascript for selected sites without having to disable it altogether.
