In fact, he would oppose Zionism into the 1950s, changing his position only because the state of Israel existed and was home to so many Jews. Horkheimer’s reponse to Nazis and German Marxist lack of concern for Jews in Nazi Germany was to break from this. But he still wanted to take the religion out of Judaism. Other cultural marxists remained anti-Zionists, but joined his effort to subvert Judaism with critical studies. What is happening today is exactly what they wanted as a group.
