Black-sounding names less likely to receive job call backs than white-sounding ones: Study

A new study shows that employers are less likely to call back applicants with Black-sounding names than those with white-sounding ones.

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago recently filed 83,000 fake job applications for 11,000 entry-level positions at multiple Fortune 500 companies with names like Brad, Greg, Darnell, Lamar, Amanda, Kristen, Ebony and Latoya.

The study, “A Discrimination Report Card,” found that the white-sounding applicant names were favored up to 24 percent more than the likely Black applicants.

“It’s of course upsetting and discouraging that in the year 2023 and so on that this phenomenon persists and can be at the level that it can be detected with an experiment like ours,” Evan K. Rose, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago and co-author of the report, said.

The 2021 study built upon research from a 2003 study, which found that applicants with names that sounded white got 50 percent more callbacks than those whose names sounded Black.

The new report also found that the percentage of discrimination varied among industries and went onto name companies with the worst rates. Auto dealers and car part retailers were the least likely to call back Black applicants.

When I screen potential tenants, neck tattoos are a no no, especially on women.

The way this study and report are framed is part of the problem. What is meant by “names that sounded black” is actually “names that are coded ghetto trash.” That is a marker for class and culture, not race.

Most black people that I know have perfectly American sounding names. My current favorite example in the name game is a young man named Nikolai — ok, not a common American name, but certainly not a ghetto trash name — who is black, a college grad, and an immigrant from Africa. My closest “black” friend — mixed race but identifies as black because his much darker mother raised him that way — is named Keith.

Ghetto trash baby mamas give their unfortunate children ghetto trash names that will handicap them. Such a name is an indicator of maternal stupidity. People will make reasonable inferences. It would help to make Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams icons in the black community. If a race conscious parent wants a great black history name, start with Frederick Douglas.

Today’s college grad is the equivalent of 1970s 3rd grader.

Tell these folks to park their racism and especially race baiters. We are tired of it. No racism, white or black!

But it is very complicated to fire a black person for the same reason.

Even 35 years ago the large company I was working for at the time would just pay fired blacks a lump sum of cash (rumored to be $10,000) if they would just go away quietly and not sue.

Very unfortunately, the same level of college, hiring, etc., is likely to reflect candidates with hundreds of points of SAT-score difference (proxy for intellectual capability and achievement).

Therefore, it is an arguably illegal, but rationally understandable, move for some resume reviewers to make such summary conclusions based on averages.

And then, as hiring manager. you get the double whammy resume from Mohammed X. What’s the chances anyone would put it in the to be interviewed file rather than the waste paper basket file

"found that the white-sounding applicant names were favored up to 24 percent more than the likely Black applicants."

When I see this I usually stop reading right there - b/c I know the article is going to be biased.

I suspect these companies are well aware of exactly how many "diverse" i.e., non-White, employees they need to keep the government's racial bean counters off of their back.

They also know "diverse" employees are more likely to sue them for "racism," "racial bias," "hostile work enviroment," "civil rights violations," etc., - with big monetary judgements against these companies.

We as parents and voters have allowed the school systems across the Nation to teach to the lowest common denominator, and to the damned ‘achievement tests’, rather than insisting on effective education founded on basic knowledge, attentive students, and avoiding Woke and DEI bullcrap spouted from union goons.
Sheniqua can’t read because she has never been taught to read or challenged to read better. It’s not in the union contract.

Some odd names are better than others. I used to know a black woman named “Marvelous”

That is a great female name

The only exception to this rule is the TV commercial industry where DeShawn has a better chance of being called back to play Todd than Todd does.
