He bought at least two houses, maybe more. I think he bought into the idea that real estate is either the best, or the only long term safe, investment.

Why someone with that much money and so little investment experience would worry about investing wisely is strange to me.

Buy a nice house in a gated and guarded community. Buy one to five really nice cars that fit in your one to five car garage. Give out one time cash awards to family/friends/people-who-helped-you-along-the-way. Give some money to a few worthwhile charities. Put the rest in an index money market. Live off the dividends.
