Who changed the Sabbath? Is a question asked today By. honest hearted people who seek to know the way.· Not I, Chimed the Church of England bell; It must have been-ah, well, I can not say, Just who did change the Sabbath day.

Who changed the Sabbath, The fourth command, so deep and, broad, Fixed by the firm decree, Of the eternal God.. Not I, Rang out" the Methodist bell; The Bible, it must be, will tell, I can not say, .' But think that Jesus changed the day.

Who changed the, Sabbath~,- An institution well designed, To keep the Creator's work in mind, Not .I, Came a sound from another steeple, Don't charge that Sin to the Baptist people, We only say ". It makes no difference about the day.

Who changed' the Sabbath, That day of holy rest. Which God not only sanctIfied, but 'blessed? Not I, Rang out in lusty tones a bell; I have no faith in Sabbaths, or in a burning hell, Don't dare to say The Congregationalists e'er changed, the' day.

Who changed the Sabbath;- The day that Christ adored And said 'twas made' for man, And he its Lord; The day the Marys kept, While Christ lay in the tomb; The day the disciples spent In their 'own upper room; The day which martyred hosts, Observed 'mid scorn and ,Jeers, - , On which they sealed their faith . With earnest cries and tears; The day that now is kept By many to theIr loss; By noble men who bear, The burden of the cross?

The idea that the Roman Catholic Church changed the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday is not a statement that holds up well under historical analysis. Not only does the New Testament indicate that Sunday was the day of worship, but early second century Christian documents also do, as follows:

Ignatius of Antioch (ca. 110 A.D.)---"...no longer observing the Sabbath but living according to the Lord's Day..." (Ep. Magnesians 9)

Epistle of Barnabas (ca. 130 A.D.)---"Wherefore, we keep the eighth day for joy, on which also Jesus arose from the dead..." (Epistle of Barnabas 15:8)

Justin Martyr (ca. 150-160 A.D.):

"And on the day called Sunday there is a gathering together....We all make our assembly in common on the day of the Sun, since it is the first day, on which God changed the darkness and matter and made the world, and Jesus Christ our Savior arose from the dead on the same day." (First Apology, I.67)

Justin, speaking to Trypho, a Jew, (and also to Trypho's Jewish friends) says the following:

Is there any other matter, my friends, in which we are blamed, than this, that we live not after the law, and are not circumcised in the flesh as your forefathers were, and do not observe sabbaths as you do?

Trypho responds, in part, by saying:

This is what we are amazed at,...that you, professing to be pious, and supposing yourselves better than others, are not in any particular separated from them, and do not alter your mode of living from the nations, in that you observe no festivals or sabbaths, and do not have the rite of circumcision; and further, resting your hopes on a man that was crucified, you yet expect to obtain some good thing from God, while you do not obey His commandments. (Dialogue with Trypho. X)

“In Colossians 2:16-17, the apostle Paul declares, “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.”

Christian’s are free to worship on any day and free anyone’s judgement.

Romans 14:5 states, “One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.” These Scriptures make it clear that, for the Christian, Sabbath-keeping is a matter of spiritual freedom, not a command from God

Choose any day of the week you desire to worship or rest. Just be convinced.

Freedom to choose your day.

Have at it!

—> Jesus kept it.

Of course.

Christ was born under the Law and had to keep 100% of it in order to be a sinless Sacrifice.

The Sabbath was in honor of the Lord God ceasing from his labors of creating the Universe.

We gather on Sunday because that is the day the Lord Jesus was resurrected from the dead freeing the Gentile believers from the Law Of Moses.

There has not been an atonement for sin with an animal sacrifice since the Temple was destroyed by the Romans as Christ was our “Passover”. Christ’s work was finished on that Sunday Morning.

If you add anything to the finished work on the Cross soon that little addition will become more important than what he did on the Cross.
“You are saved by GRACE, not of works lest any man should boast!”

But other say “You are saved by GRACE -IF- you dot the ‘i’ and cross the ‘t’ our way!”

Romans 1: 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.

This “change” is consistent with people twisting Scriptures to what they want instead of following what God wants. God has made it abundantly clear, the Sabbath is His Holy designated day. It commemorates Creation. Those who worship on Sunday block out the Commandment to "Remember the Sabbath . . " , maybe someone changed it to forget it. The Sabbath was good enough for Jesus (our Example), it should be for us as well.

Our church rents out the sanctuary from a Seventh-day-Adventist church on Sunday. We had a pot luck dinner the other day and the announcement said do not bring pork as it is against the 7th day church rules.

My daughter thought that was stupid.

My wife and I said “Hey - it’s their church building, so their rules.”

We also agreed with her on the pork thing - and mentioned the NT views on no food restrictions. HOWEVER, it was good to read your post, as I shouldn’t look down on some other denomination just because they consider Saturday the Sabbath or have food restrictions.

In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Do you know what “under the Law” means? it means under the condemnation of the law. Jesus was our Example. We should follow His Example. Not follow the world. So, now you are sinless and can disregard the Ten Commandments?

Jesus was our Example. We should follow His Example.

No. Christ fulfilled the law in order to be qualified to die for the sins we could never pay for.

His example did not save. Faith in His blood and death and resurrection save.

Now if you understood what the New Covenant really meant, you’d know it does not make void the Law, yea, it establishes the Law.

The Sabbath was part of God’s covenant with Israel. Without even getting into the question of the Old Law being abolished at the cross, perhaps those who advocate the Sabbath still being binding today would answer these:

“...you shall kindle no fire in all your habitations on the sabbath day.”
(Exodus 35:3)

(This would be fine for Israel, but would not be appropriate for northern climates.)

“...from evening to evening shall you keep your sabbath.”
(Leviticus 23:32b)

(i.e., from sunset to sunset; in some places north of the Arctic Circle, the nights are six months long; the commandment would be inappropriate for those areas)

***Constantine brought Sunday keeping into the church.***

Nonsense. he simply codified into Roman Law what Christians had already been doing since the first century.

Faith in His blood and death and resurrection save.

And how is the faith manifested? Matthew 15:8,9 “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.
Also "If ye love Me, keep My Commandments". So how is your strength in Jesus shown to the world?

Ah, note I did not say Gentiles could not keep the Sabbath, nor that it wasn’t a good idea.

The OBLIGATION, however, to keeping the Sabbath only applies to the Jewish people.

The OBLIGATION (the mitzvah; command; contract term) first appears at Mt. Sinai, Exodus 31.13

“Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying: Verily ye shall keep My sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that ye may know that I am the LORD who sanctify you.”

Oh, I forgot. There are different rules for different peoples, right? “God is no respecter of persons” means that God will provide every person with the opportunity to receive the blessings available through the plan of salvation.)

Now, I know the Catholics are the One True Church (because they said so) and furthermore they need to be separated from the Protestants. So God is going to have to compartmentalize these different denominations. The Jews will have to have their own slice and so on and so on.

Instead of breaking Heaven to a bunch of small villages, it would have been better if God had simply stated what his Commands are and write them down on something permanent. And if you love Him enough to keep His Commandments, then you get your pass.

Isaiah 66

Don’t see a sabbath connection there.

“The whole earth is at rest” (somewhere in Isaiah)
