A bunch of geeks said “hey, this gives us an excuse to eat pie”. And then thanks to the internet even non-geeks found out and started using it. Because life is short, have some pie.

Well it’s a division problem with no end doing it once. You don’t keep dividing it like you .5 example. The circumference divided by the diameter of any circle will result in this number that only ends with your patience to keep working the math. AND it’s one of the most useful constants in the world. Anybody doing anything where they’re making circles needs pi, there’s no way to know how much tile to buy without pi. Your car is running 2 different calculations with pi every time you make it move (your speedometer and odometer are both calculated on 2 pi R).

So it’s a pretty cool number.

It is because pi is what is called a transcendent number. That is a number that cannot be expressed as a standard number or root of a number. Another example is e.

It is not an infinite number. It has a finite value. It just has an infinite number of digits.

More properly, it is a fixed relationship value of any circle. The circumference of a circle related to it's diameter.

So, how can we ever know its finite value?

picture a number line - 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...

pi has exactly 1 spot on that line - just like 1, 4 1/2, 7.2...

just because you write down another decimal place digit to the "approximation", the value of pi does not change or change locations on the number line

An old joke from the country was of a young man who went to the big city to attend college. On his return, his father asked him, “What’d you larn?”

He said, “Pi r square, pap!”

“You idjit,” said his father. “Pi are round. Cake are square!”
