A new image from Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios has emerged online.

Shared on Twitter by artist Jose Iturriaga, the Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios image previews the upcoming DC animated feature-length movie set during the time of the Aztec Empire.

Iturriaga's caption reads, "The first official image from the [Batman] Azteca animated film has been released! I had the honor of working as Concept Environment Artist and cannot wait to see the film when it's released on [Max]!"

What do we know about Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios?

Announced by Warner Bros. Animation, Anima, and Chatrone in June 2022, Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios is directed by Juan Meza-León. José C. García de Letona, Aaron D. Berger, Carina Schulze, and Fernando De Fuentes serve as producers on the film, while Sam Register and Tomás Yankelevich are executive producers.

"In the time of the Aztec Empire, Yohualli Coatl – a young Aztec boy – experiences tragedy when his father and village leader, Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors," the synopsis reads. "Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma's temple, and avenge his father's death."

Once badass Cortés landed his expedition on Aztec shores (modern Mexico) he did the unthinkable. Cortés, aware of the fear in his troops, burned his ships to make retreat impossible, a real baller move.

No question about. The Spaniards had just come out of a 700 years long war to throw the Moors (Moslems from North Africa) out of Spain. They were made of some pretty stiff stuff.

A man named Bernal Diaz del Castillo was with Cortes and wrote a book about the conquest of Mexico called “The True History of the Conquest of New Spain.”

The thing that struck me about his book - besides the savagery of the Aztecs and his descriptions of the mountains of skulls and bones from human sacrifice, was the perfectly normal gender roles of the Aztecs.

Here is a society completely untouched by so-called evil patriarchal Europeans - and it still turns out that men were warriors, high priests, rulers and builders, and women went to market, cared for children, were nurses, and organized children’s education.

Disagree. Superman “truth, justice and the American way” goes back decades. Comic or not, he’s part of the American fabric.

I don’t want it messed with.

For the love of algore.

Come up with your own heroes.

They can be any shade, of any ethnicity, any race or any sex that you can dream up. But stop ripping off the characters that were invented by others.

You just look like you have no imagination or are fricking lazy.

So is this Mexicans taking over Batman, or is it DC taking over Mexican heroes? Mexicans do have their own heroes and comic books. For some Mexicans, this must look like the Yankees trying to muscle in on their territory. Or maybe DC is taking away both your old Batman and the Mexicans’ opportunity to give their own heroes a mass market.

“It’s always the evil white man.

Or

Evil German Nazis.

You need to be careful if you show blacks robbing stores, Hispanics in gangs, a Muslim terrorist, a Jewish banker / Lawyer screwing people, a homo that’s weird and a pervert.’’

But, they are all saved by Pedro Wayne.
