As we get closer to the one-quarter mark of the 21st century, it may seem that things are changing faster than ever before, especially in the areas of culture and media. I deal with music for a living and even I can’t keep up with everything that’s going on. But I think I can see things clearly enough to make some predictions and observations for music in 2024.

Prediction #1. Obscure groups you never heard of will continue to make great on Spotify.
Prediction #2. All commercial music will continue to sound like alley cats screeching.
Prediction #3. Gasoline pump music and the “music” companies play for you while on hold will continue to make you want to poke out your eardrums with ice picks.

The music of 2024 will be the same level of schlock that has been produced every year since the music died in the mid 70s.

Only one I care about: The Taylor Swift music Holocaust will end. Please God.

I saw Buddy Guy in 2022 at Bethel Woods (the site of Woodstock). He was magnificent - way better than Kenny Wayne Sheppard.

Yes, there is a lot of great music out there made by obscure, independent musicians. Here’s one I found out last week named Mitski who in my opinion destroys over promoted schlock like Taylor Ditz.....

1. Country music will still be consistently about she done me wrong and will have its characteristically steady line-dance-worthy beat,

That guy is great and he’s almost 90 now. I saw one of the last concerts ever of Stevie Ray Vaughn when he toured with Jeff Beck, Fire meets Fury tour. Stevie was unbelievable, I was surprised how small a guy he was only around 5’4” now both he and Jeff are gone and Madonna still lives proving life on earth is in fact hell.

Prediction number one. It will continue to be bad and get worse as the year progresses.

The last live show I went to was Robin Trower back in 2011. What a great show.

I teach about Mitski in my college music course, as one of a collection of non-classical performers who deserve recognition, but who will never get it because it is easier and cheaper to produce and promote mindless druglike songs to ignorant audiences.

One of the reasons the 60s feels like the golden era of rock is that the conduit for music had not yet become controlled by oligarchs, and performers could be heard through FM radio and tape copies of vinyl. You can still find diamonds in the musical dirt today, but you have to know where to look, and care enough to look there.

My experience at a Buddy Guy concert was not as memorable. It was more of a lecture tour instead of a concert.

There’s going to be an AI-generated “hit” song in 2024.

It will be a huge hit on some zoomer platform like tiktok and will come and go before almost everyone over the age of 40 even finds out.

When word finally gets out, there will be hundreds of rage bait hit pieces on how awful it is and the terrible state of the music industry and all that.

And the kids will have already moved on to the next thing.

There’s enough good music to be discovered by myself that is better than the horrible unlistenable bulk of music today.

I remember reading that here a couple weeks ago. I’ve yet to try it, but have it committed to memory. Thanks for the reminder!

If you get a chance to see Joe Bonamassa in concert, take it. You'll not be disappointed . . .

Actually Biden will appoint Taylor Swift as US Music Czar and she will immediately outlaw all music that doesn’t suck.

What other artists do you include in your course?
