U.S. Coast Guard Reduces Active Cutter Fleet Due to Personnel Shortage
The Maritime Executive ^ | November 1, 2023 | staff

Posted on 11/03/2023 5:23:23 PM PDT by Wallace T.

The U.S Coast Guard is adapting to a workforce shortage by making operational adjustments, aiming to preserve its capacity to fulfill critical missions. The agency has 10 percent fewer enlisted personnel than needed, and it has acknowledged that it cannot continue to operate as before with fewer people. Rather than attempt to run all its vessels shorthanded, it will be idling some of its cutters and transferring crew to fully man the remaining active vessels.

“We cannot do the same with less. Conducting our missions is often inherently dangerous, and doing so without enough crew puts our members and the American public at increased risk,” said Adm. Linda Fagan, U.S. Coast Guard Commandant.

I once met a guy who was trained for combat in the arctic before being shipped off to fight in Vietnam.

I remember Dr. James Dobson was a trained psychologist; they put him in a typing pool.

The son of a friend of mine joined the Army, with a promise that he’d go into electronics. That made sense, as he was always interested in electrical stuff.

If you want to learn a technical skill, always go Air Force.

The Navy requires a 6 year enlistment for any of their technical career specialties, whereas the Air Force only requires a 4 year commitment.

There are technical positions in the Army, my Uncle was a Signal Corps specialist who made it to Warrant Officer before he retired and was part of the Vice President communications detail.

But by and large what happened to your friend's son is what the Army does.

“Free” college is one the biggest killers of recruitment. The primary pool of recruits (lower middle class and below) no longer cares about the GI Bill, as most of them already have access to free education. Why would they give up 4 years of their life for something that’s already free?

There were quite a few women in the Coast Guard in the early 90s when I joined. I have no doubt the new commandant has wokified it mightily. can’t just be about stopping Colombians, rescuing fishing boats, inspecting yachts, and sitting around lighthouses. Semper Paratus.

End welfare. Too much available work out there. Trump does it as POTUS and just before the 2026 mid-terms, he offers to quit provided both house and senate remain in GOP hands.

The medicine will be so bitter he’ll ride off into the sunset a hero. Replace a couple of old justices and turn the office over to vp Rand. Set up for 6-10 years.

Deep state destroyed. Public education totally disassembled. Democrats will vote GOP if they know he’ll quit-promise keeper. Gonna be awesome.

Linda Fagan, USCG Commandant . Woke all the way. And they wonder why enlistment is down. We are the laughingstock of the world.

Anyone want to die to protect the Hunter Biden types of DC who sell out our country to the highest bidder?

They need to recruit in DC’s private schools and in the sexual weirdo community.

When you have a Department of Education in concert with the NEA and AFT, actively dumbing down generations, convincing them that patriotism is not only pase, but domestic terrorism, don’t expect any of them to want to serve.

They only feel entitled to be served.

“The son of a friend of mine joined the Army, with a promise that he’d go into electronics.”

I was a Navy recruiter for many years. When someone told me the Army promised them a high tech job, I would ask them, “When you picture the Army, is a bunch of people working on electronics what you see?” That frequently brought them back to reality.

It’s tough to see the longer picture when you’re young and had the service misrepresented to you. You’ve got much more control when you are in the reserves.
