Although rare, men are being diagnosed and dying from breast cancer. Additionally, from 2015 to 2019, the breast cancer incidence rate in men increased slightly.

The American Cancer Society estimated about 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2023. Of those, more than 500 will die. Furthermore, the lifetime risk of men being diagnosed with the disease is about 1 in 833. Charlie Morris stopped by the CW39 Houston studios to tell his survival story as he worked to remove the stigma of male breast cancer.

Male breast cancer

Breast cancer in men usually starts in the duct (tube that carries milk to the nipple).

Male breast cancer is a rare cancer that begins as a growth of cells in the breast tissue of men.

Breast cancer is typically thought of as a condition that happens in women. But everyone is born with some breast tissue. So anyone can get breast cancer.

Male breast cancer is rare. It happens most often in older men, though it can occur at any age.

Treatment for male breast cancer typically involves surgery to remove the breast tissue. Other treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy, may be recommended as well.

Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of male breast cancer can include:

>A painless lump or thickening of the skin on the chest.
>Changes to the skin covering the chest, such as dimpling, puckering, scaling or changes in the color of the skin.
>Changes to the nipple, such as changes in the skin color or scaling, or a nipple that begins to turn inward.
>Discharge or bleeding from the nipple.

Not widely known, is that the late actor Richard Roundtree
(Shaft) had breast cancer treatment around 1993.
He noticed a lump under his nipple “about the size of a lima bean”.

Richard underwent a modified mastectomy, that removed his left breast from nipple to the underarm.
He then has six months of chemotherapy, which left him so sick he struggled to get out of bed.

When done with treatment, Richard starred in a Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman film called ‘Seven’.
Men’s breast cancer counts for about 1% of all breast cancer cases.
