The Seattle cop who joked about the death of a graduate student who was fatally struck by a police cruiser while crossing the street defended his callous remarks in a statement released Friday.
Officer Daniel Auderer claimed his cold-hearted laughter at 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula’s death and jokes that the city should “just write a check” were taken out of context during a private call he didn’t know was being recorded by his department-issued body camera.

OMG. That girl looks like a sweetheart
These are the guys who will be coming around to take your firearms and escort you to the cattle cars. Probably joke about it too “Did you see how that woman screamed when I crushed her baby’s head?”
Sovereign immunity. Followed procedure. To make an omelet you have to break a few eggs.
Am I missing any?
Oh yeah, over 70 in a 25 zone. It’s illegal when we do it. As is vehicular homicide.
“I responded with something like: ‘She’s 26 years old, what value is there, who cares,'” Auderer stated.“I intended the comment as a mockery of lawyers – I was imitating what a lawyer tasked with negotiating the case would be saying and being sarcastic to express that they shouldn’t be coming up with crazy arguments to minimize the payment.”
You can choose to not believe him but it changes the context completely.
She was a pedestrian. Where she was crossing (in a cross walk) there were a bunch of construction signs and Jersey barriers. Those signs probably partially blocked the cop’s view, and hers as well. Perhaps flashing construction signs that made it difficult for her to see the cop’s lights.
The cop was responding to a drug overdose, and sounds like he followed protocols. Tragic for the girl and her family. The drug overdose survived.
Regardless of what Officer Auderer was actually giggling about on the phone and how well he typically performs his duties... his career is most likely over. It is too bad he couldn’t have scored higher on the firefighter civil service exam. We never had to worry about body cams recording the idiotic remarks we made after fishing the corpses of people who had dead for 6 months out of the water, or after performing CPR on someone who had been shot 5 times, or other awful situations we found ourselves in the middle of.
My point is that people make stupid remarks and laugh at idiotically and inappropriately after they have been in stressful situations. Some of us are better at keeping our mouths shut, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that the big mouths were not good at their jobs.
I agree. Somebody wants him gone, and has felt this way long before this recording was given to the media.
“Daniel Auderer is a vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, the largest police labor union in the Northwest. He is also cited as a drug-recognition expert who has worked in the force for over two decades. Auderer is a 49-year-old Lacey Washington Native who graduated from North Thurston High School.”
I didn’t realize that he was a union grifter. You are right someone probably is trying to get rid of him, but chances are since he is a union insider the City will have to pay who knows how much more, and nothing will happen to him.
Context is everything, that is true. Without hearing the entire conversation you never can know what was meant by an excerpt.
Maybe what he claims is true but that is not what he said and the tone used doesn’t support his assertion. He laughed a couple of times and there is nothing in the tape suggesting that he was paraphrasing. He wasn’t responsible for the crash and he was speaking in what he thought was a private conversation. That’s pretty much the only defense, the conversation was dark and spinning it won’t help.
You really need to assume that every call is being recorded because it is. If you are a government worker a any level your calls are being recorded by the outfit that employs you. Everybody else’s calls go to the NSA at least.
if he was mocking lawyers
well ok then
Hope Antifa handles the cop.
indeed it does. which makes me curious why the crucial evidence is always left out of the excerpt...
Worse than what the cop said, is that it's difficult to have a private conversations anymore. Someone's always recording, hoping to capture something that can go viral.
Dark humor is a way to deflect the pain and stress of hard jobs. Whether it is guys tree cutting on sides of roads or riggers over the ocean platforms.
In emergency rooms across the US there were trophy boards that held interesting and often large items removed from various orifices presenting in the department over time. Not identified by patient. Not in a patient area. Just there to remind staff ruefully of the irrationality of humans. No longer permitted.
Wow this thread is a real magnet for all the cop butt-lickers.
