TULSA, Okla. — Starting July 22 through August Walmart locations across Oklahoma are becoming sensory-friendly Saturdays 8 a.m. through 10 a.m.

This back-to-school initiative helps people with sensory sensitivities such as autism be able to shop without excess stressors.

Participating Walmart stores are creating a calmer and quiet environment by dimming lights, turning off the radio and placing static pictures on TV's and monitors.

Autism Oklahoma is a local nonprofit that advocates for sensory-sensitive people. Founder and Executive Director of AO Melinda Lauffenburger is happy with Walmart's initiative for back-to-school shopping.

When I was a kid way back when, the best part of visiting Kaufmann's was going past the electronic department and seeing the newest tv's and stereo's.

They should always dim the lights so I can’t see the prices

During Covid, some grocery stores had certain hours reserved for senior citizens or other who may be moving slower than the average shopper. Maybe this is a new version of the same thing.

Saving all those energy costs, Walmart will soon be passing on the savings to it’s customers.

They're catering to a vastly smaller portion of the population, and the greatest source of 'overstimulation' will still be other shoppers.

I don't see how this really, materially helps who they say it will. Seems like feel-good BS to me.

Unless they shut the store down to *only* sensory-sensitive shoppers, this doesn't strike me as more than marketing.

That may be. But I’m an older-middle-aged man who struggles with being overstimulated by too much visual and auditory clutter. Part of that is hearing damage. I was encouraged to hear this news, although I’m skeptical that it will be much different than normal. On a related note, I wish that churches would offer a low-sensory service for those of us who are bothered by flashing lights and super loud music.

Sorry man - I’m not buying this whole autism thing.

it’s either extreme infantilization because parents aren’t raising their kids or too much of an upbringing in front of a monitor.

I’ve seen too many 20+ year olds that wear pajamas out in public and only eat chicken mcnuggets complaining that they’re neurodivergent.

Some higher functioning autistics would feel stimatized by someone ‘suggesting’ they should shop during those hours, with the other people who are ‘like you’. This is, of course, not the intention, but I know of some in that population who want more than anything else, to blend in and be inconspicous. Other’s with behavioral problems they have a hard time controlling, could use this. But those people would usually have a caregiver holding and managing their money.

It’s not aimed to help autistics. It’s aimed at young snowflake generation mommies. What would happen if Gen Z were really challenged in their lives? Do they have any skill set for that? The entitlement is toxic.

Another sign that the bozos currently infesting the U.S. are losing their minds. No wonder they don’t want to pay back their student loans. They should have been made to “pay their loans forward” before they were given the money in the first place. The least they can do is all start a “GoFundMe” page to raise money and take this monkey off the backs of the U.S. taxpayers.

Some of the kid-friendly Broadway shows have a performance or two that are set aside for those with sensory issues. It works because everyone is there for that purpose and well, its’s Broadway.

As you said, who is going to force the regular Walmart shoppers to not be overstimulating? Especially the stereotypical bad kind of Walmart shopper. If actually enforced, it’d become a nightmare, which means it won’t be.
