Why Are People Mad About 'Snow White'? The Controversy Explained

After the success of 2023’s The Little Mermaid, Disney’s next live-action project is a remake of Snow White — but not everyone is excited about the new movie.

A live-action version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has been in development since at least 2016, but production didn’t kick off in earnest until 2021. In June of that year, Deadline reported that Rachel Zegler had landed the role of the titular princess, who made her Disney debut in 1937. (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was Disney’s first full-length animated film.)

“People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is — because it needed that,” Zegler, who is of Colombian and Polish descent, told Vanity Fair in October 2022. “It’s an 85-year-old cartoon, and our version is a refreshing story about a young woman who has a function beyond ‘Someday My Prince Will Come.’”

“No story is necessarily so sacred that it can’t be told in other interpretations, as long as the elements are there.”

No, it’s not sacred, but if your interpretation involves changing a character called “Snow White” into “Not White” then you are just pushing a racist agenda, and that means you don’t care about the story and you’re just going to turn into garbage anyway.

Suppose we figure it out for ourselves, and we are frustrated about a politically correct Snow White? Is that bad, in your view?

Plenty of people batted an eye about pornography in the 1970s.

Sure, Disney can do whatever the hell they want. And we can all have an opinion about what they are doing. You seem to be saying, nobody should have an opinion.

I disagree, if they are being clear that this is a Latino version or a black version or Chinese or Japanese. They have to be upfront about what they are doing and not trying to slide it all by and tell us it’s the same.

In my mind, there is nothing wrong with telling the story of Snow White, as a Latino interpretation, with Latino themes and whether. As long as they are upfront about it. Stories get told and retold all the time doing this. It’s only when they say that white lives don’t matter when rewriting the story that it matters.

“It’s only when they say that white lives don’t matter when rewriting the story that it matters.”

That’s what they are saying when they decide to “dewhiten” Snow White. There’s no way around it. Disagree all you want, I don’t care, it’s blatantly racist to do that.

The way they are doing it, you are right. They are just inserting things, without regard to the original story.

However, the simple act of reinterpreting the story for a specific audience, such as Latinos, I disagree with you. Disney’s retelling is not even the original story.

Here is what Disney removed when he retold the story of Snow White.

THE REAL STORY BEFORE DISNEY
Here are some key differences from the original tale to the Disney version that are worth noting:

The story begins with Snow White’s real mother, longing for a daughter who would be “as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood [of a frame she was holding]”. She was blessed with this daughter whom she named Snow White, but died immediately after giving birth.

Instead of asking the huntsman to bring back Snow White’s heart, the Queen rather asks for her lungs and her liver, so she could eat them to become immortal, and be sure Snow White was dead.

Snow White was the one to suggest she runs off into the woods if the huntsman spared her. He agreed and took the liver and lungs from a boar near by.

There was no “whistle while you work” sequence at all, as the little house in the forest was actually extremely clean and perfect.

Snow White took a bit of food from each plate that was sitting on the table already, then went up to sleep in one of the beds that actually was the right size for her.

All 7 dwarfs spoke in this story, unlike Dopey in the Disney version.

When the dwarfs found her asleep in their bed, they all allowed her to sleep and greeted her in the morning.

The Queen did not give an apple to Snow White right away, instead she gave her a lace bodice, and tied it so tight to Snow White that she couldn’t breathe. Snow White passed out on the ground in the house. The dwarfs saw her, cut the ties, and she told them what happened.

The magic mirror explained that Snow White was still alive, so this time, the Queen offered to comb Snow Whites hair, and she agreed. The comb was riddled with poison and when it made contact with her hair, Snow White fell unconscious again. The dwarfs found her again, pulled the comb from her hair, and warned her not to let anyone in.

The Queen went again this time with the apple, and proved that it would be okay by eating the white part in front of Snow White. However, it was the red part that was poisonous. Snow White gave into temptation and took a bite, falling seemingly “dead”.

The dwarfs placed Snow White in a glass coffin since she didn’t look dead as her cheeks were still flush, so they didn’t want to bury her.

The prince came across the coffin and asked the dwarfs for it as he loved her so much. The dwarfs reluctantly gave it to him. He didn’t kiss or touch her.

As he carried the coffin away, he tripped, and the piece of poison apple came up from Snow White’s throat and she woke up. The prince and her went back home to the kingdom to get married.

The prince was wary of the Queen, as she attempted to kill her again, so he punished her at their wedding by forcing her to wear hot iron shoes that were in burning coals until she died.

So Disney adulterated the story.

In the new version of Old Yeller, Yeller is a FEMALE black lab who kills Travis and the annoying little kid, then goes off and becomes a war leader among the Comanches.

It will be heart-warming....

As I recall, the Brothers Grimm version was called “Snow-Drop.”

In the 90s, Disney put out a lot of cheap direct-to-video sequels of its classics. They didn’t help the reputation of Disney, but probably made them some decent money. This is about more than money. They are replacing all the classics - old and recent. It’s an agenda.

“After the success of 2023’s The Little Mermaid, Disney’s next live-action project is a remake of Snow White”

Success? Not even breaking even is a success? Maybe they consider it a success because it wasn’t a complete disaster.

“It makes no sense to me,” Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism known as achondroplasia, said during a January 2022 interview on Marc Maron‘s “WTF” podcast. “You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f–king backward story about seven dwarves living in a cave together. What the f–k are you doing, man?”

The title is “Snow White and the seven Dwarves”, not Snow White and the seven average size guys”. What is Dinklage’s problem with dwarves in movies? Is he saying that calling someone a dwarf is derogatory? He’s played them before and didn’t mind cashing the paychecks. Now he is denying that to others. No more parts for dwarves, munchkins or oompa loompas.

“After the success of 2023’s The Little Mermaid...” When an article starts off with misinformation about a disappointment’s “success,” why trust the rest?

I think the word "success" is being redefined -- sorry, reimagined. Probably any current Disney product that manages to break even is considered a "success." Other than that, it did not make much money.

I dont care if disney makes a full black version. Its none of anyone's business how disney spends their money unless it is immoral.

Actually, it is the business of anyone who owns stock in the company, because disney is destroying stockholder value with their wokeness.

I can’t understand where the stockholders with pitch forks are hiding. This management team had the money making machine of rock solid eighty years bankrolled and Star Wars plus all sorts of super hero momentum and they threw it all in the toilet.

This and AB are the worst management (excepting Biden) in the world.

I don’t is anyone is ‘mad’ — most I see are simply laughing and pointing at Disney’s continued tone-deaf failures.

Snow White belongs to Disney, they can make her Snow Purple if they wish.

Actually it doesn't 'belong' to disney. That story has long been in the public domain. Anyone could make a movie and call it 'Snow White', and Disney wouldn't have a leg to stand on for criticizing them doing so.

It wasn’t just a cartoon... It was a Germanic fairytale and as such their “diversifying” it is cultural appropriation.

It’s a 19th Century Germanic fairy tale collected by the Brother Grimm.

So... sure. Color doesn’t matter... but it’s still Cultural Appropriation and “color washing” the White people out of it. Unless of course they need a villain... in which case they leave the Caucasian in.
