Congressman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) has spearheaded a House effort to pass a version of the POLICE Act that passed the chamber Wednesday.
According to the CATO Institute, at least 35 Border Patrol agents died in the line of duty through various causes between 2003-2019. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection website identifies another 63 agents who have died in the line of duty from 2020 to the present. The most recent incident of a Border Patrol Agent being killed in the line of duty while engaging illegal immigrants took place in December 2022, according to Fox News. The outlet reported that a 38-year-old agent was killed in pursuit of a group of illegal immigrants in Mission, Texas.
As DC Enquirer previously reported, Border Patrol officials discovered what they called an "inoperable destructive device" in "the area Port of Douglas, Arizona" as recently as May 6th.
The startling discovery suggests that the line of duty for a typical Customs and Border Patrol Agent even near one of the border's few and far between strong points is an incredibly dangerous place to be.
