I don’t know people that go to ‘the movies’ any more. Maybe once a year. Who watches these pathetic, cringey awards shows? I cut out TV 10 years ago...really, who hasn’t and still watches this tripe?

Same with me. And as for the Oscar broadcast, it’s hard to get excited to see which movie I’ve never seen or heard of, beats out some other movie I’ve never heard of, to win an award. And to sit through up to a 4 hour awards show is excessive anyway.

Movie-ticket sales are still down almost 40% from before the pandemic. Probably 50 or more, accounted for inflation. And that was after almost two decades of stagnation despite population growth and inflation. Movie companies rely heavily on streaming services and overseas releases or else they could never afford to create modern blockbusters. Dramas and pure comedies (as oppose to occasionally funny action movies) are almost extinct.

The last truly successful year for movies was 2002 (Spider-Man, Star Wars Episode 2, Harry Potter 2, Lord of the Rings 2, Signs, My Big Fat Greek Wedding).
