Starlink, is it worth it?

Ok, so I live in the mountains, we barely have electricity and no other utilities of any kind, no phone,cable,...I have been using an unlimited mobile hotspot I got from Calyxinstitute.org for the last few years. It was on the Sprint network, but T Mobile bought Sprint and screwed it all up, Now it SUCKS, so I started looking for another ISP and decided to go with Starlink.(3 months ago)

I ordered it and it showed up 2 days later, I installed it over the weekend, my only real complaint is about how large the plug is from antenna to router, it required me to drill a hole 1 1/4" in diameter to fit the damned 90 degree plug. Once hooked up it took about 5 minutes for it to Self Align, loaded the App on my tablet and setup user/password for router and it was ON and UP!!

during this time I had never received any emails for confirmation, but the CC I used got jacked the day after I ordered it so the recurring bill wasn't going to go thru. I tried resetting on their site, dozens of times, sent support tickets, nothing worked never got anything, I run my own Mail Server and I never put all the records in my DNS because I never needed them, but I think they didn't like my email with no DMARC or SPF records, I finally I sent an email to SpaceX and got a reply, all they did was tell me I would get an email with a link to reset password, Never got anything but I didn't give up trying. then I went into the DNS and set all the records right, Finally when the credit card they had on file failed the second time, they sent me an email with a link top setup my account. I was able to login and fix everything.

They have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE of any kind and you can't call them if you have a problem. So don't screw anything up when you order it. However I am thoroughly impressed and pleased with the systems speed and operation, it really works Great and I would highly recommend it for others in my position. It is $110 per month and you have to buy the equipment up front for $600 also. But it is Absolutely worth every nickel, no blips, no hiccups, no Problems of any kind.

Got it. you have never used it so you are making assumptions..

This thread has several posters talking about congestion, high traffic, and the need for more Sats.

What exactly do you disagree with? Are you saying more Sats aren't necessary to keep the ball rolling?

government cut him off a while ago

You are correct, I forgot that Elon was cut off in August of 2022.

And in December, Elon was whining that Starlink is not profitable:

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/now-starlink-available-order-more-110000984.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAHdYFp7FmMpvr8rEBG4m0hoAcL2M0A36PFpUvVJ-Ue_SGTKJu81c70Io0ziZeJUWVwRZ1FlAZvwBcMRV18MifYXKBI0QvQugFHdUUVho7RjIVwqKe-KAd5-frMHNp1s3Sf3v6wapFxZdQ0OeTR7DSATU-2F7xLc6skYjeDRqNZO1

(I don't know why that link is so freakishly long)

Note: the link points out download speeds have dropped from an average of 80mbs to 50mbs in the USA. That's a pretty massive drop and it will continue as more users sign on to the service until more Sats come on line. And this supply of Sats MUST continue. If what I have written before is not persuasive, here is another article that comes to somewhat of the same conclusion I did, but based on the technical limitations of his Sats and focusing on his inability to make the profits he claims even if everyone on Earth started using the service: https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/elon-musk-predicted-starlink-would-generate-%2430-billion-in-revenue.-dont-believe-it.-2021

I have trees that block the Direct TV satellite at 234 degrees.

Does Starlink have more than one satellite?

Directv dish points to the SW and Starlink more northward. Some program was being promoted in our county on facebook and I called the number. I live in the mountains and I was eligible. They sent the equipment at no cost to me and I had to spend about $150 to get equipment to mount it and not get interference. The same deal gave me a year at no charge then $110 a month. I have been pleasantly surprised by its speed and stability. I would recommend it.

Limited as it is, I’ll stick with Hughes until Musk’s gadget becomes truly plug-and-play, which this thread convinces me that it isn’t, and user support becomes a reality, which this thread convinces me that it also isn’t. I’m in one those deep hollers that restrict the view, so it may never be viable here anyway. Before you jump all over Hughes for being too slow, I don’t do video, (not even YooToob), nor am I a gamer, so spare me. I have better things to do than rot my mind consuming Netflix.

“it doesn’t come off”

“I have the rectangular dish and it does indeed detach.”

The original Dishy McFlatface (the nickname for a Starlink dish) was round with a 100’ non-detachable.

Dishy McFlatface II is rectangular and comes with a 75’ cable which is UNATTACHED and in the box — the user attaches it.

Starlink sells kits for both masonry and wood wall construction for Dish II as well as replacement cables (one of my clients mowed his 150’ cable prior to us getting the conduit run ready — the Starlink cable is suitable for ground contact but not suitable for burial — Fortunately I gave him my 150’ cable so he could get going again).

It’s an EXCELLENT system and I find the customer support is very responsive via their webpage.

My client saves $200.00 +/- each month from his last satellite provider (he HAS to have high speed internet and only satellite is available where he lives).

Here at home we were paying $80.00 per month for 5 MB download, $115.00 for 8 MB down...Starlink is very nice for us.

“I will be getting another one for one of my other houses in a few months”

Starlink now has ‘portability’ for an extra $25.00 a month (you can turn it on and off) — just bring you dish and modem (the big white thing that the cables plug into) and purchase a new cable for your other home...it could save you another $110.00 per month and the $600.00 upfront cost. We take our Starlink when we are on the road in our RV just in case we NEED to have email for business when we are in the boonies...

Just a thought.

In closing Starlink charges $110.00 per 30 days — this means you pay 13 times per year so it’s not really ‘monthly.’

You evaluation is correct, sir.

Best remote internet, ever, and will only get better once the other shells are in orbit.

Customer service is horrible, expect 2 weeks to 2 months for email to be returned.

However, it just works.

Total Number of Satellites Still in Orbit

As of this same date, there are 2,793 of the 3,055 satellites still in orbit. A large number of satellites from the Starlink Group 4-7 were lost to a geomagnetic storm. New groups of satellites will also need to be launched to replace older units that are outdated or damaged by orbital decay. SpaceX is constantly working on improving the technology to reduce the effect of orbital decay and extend the lifespan of the Starlink satellites.

The satellites are in low orbit and are not Geo Sync satellites. (Geo sync are in elliptical orbit)

The dishes create heat, they are electrically steered (not physically steered) for the signal.

I was signed up to be a beta tester, and put down a $100 deposit, but when I got the notification it was available I looked at the current drain of the dish and saw this was not a off the grid solution, I cancelled my order.

Think I got the refund, but I have never checked to be sure.

Unlike most internet suppliers, they don’t nag you to try again.
