He knew too much, and had to be silenced.
They took his laptop(s) and destroyed evidence.
They discovered his contact with Assange and tried to silence him.
He was smarter than they thought and took shelter in the Ecuadoran Embassy in London.
They eventually had to expel him for diplomatic political reasons, and he has been under arrest in the UK ever since fighting extradition.
