Well it’s not going to get a lot of positive votes here at good old FR. What is the attraction for you? Or was that sarcasm?

I’m not sure why that would be a distinction. There are a number of big fans here that I recall. The attraction is how teeming with life it is. How many different human experiences are dissected. And the sheer grandeur of it.

It’s one of my favorite books too. I read it first in my early 20s, and have reread it at least once a decade ever since. I enjoy it tremendously, and see more in it as I grow older. Not a day goes by that I don’t recall some passage or another in it.

I think people approach the book as something difficult, which it can be at first. The better way is simply enjoy Joyce’s quick humor and cleverness. I’ll give one example: Bloom is in a pub and gets into an argument about being a Jew. “Jesus was a Jew! His mother was a Jew and his father was a Jew too!” he shouts. One of his friends then hustles him out before things gets out of hand by saying “That’s enough with you now! And Jesus had no father!”.
