Vanity: Thank you for your service, but....
11/9/2022 | By Laz A. Mataz

Donald Trump is my favorite President, even more so than Ronald Reagan.

However, I think I’m moving on from him.

I like him in the role of a clarion-calling standard bearer, and his presidency was the best I have ever seen.

I don’t like him in terms of his failure to be a team player. I’m not even sure I like him as a kingmaker. Calling out numbers to make him look good, in a severely-disappointing election shows me he doesn’t care about the boots on the ground, but only how he looks.

Reagan faced the same Establishment hate and Media mocking, but he had a great way of playful rebuttal, with a twinkle in his eye and a little smile. America loved that. All the attacks mustered against him, failed, because he was able to gently turn it around on his attacker with a witty quip or a well thought out fact.

Reagan was also the author of the phrase, the 11th commandment, which was “Thou shall not attack a fellow Republican.”

Trump, on the other hand, has a serious ego problem. He cannot resist getting into a public verbal fight with anyone who criticizes him. While this was fresh and new in 2016, and propelled him into the presidency, it doesn’t work in 2022.

Also, the way Trump fights back is not nearly as good as Reagan’s style. Trump hasn’t got the charm of Reagan, and it’s beginning to hurt our side.

It is for these reasons that I must move on from Donald Trump. Sir, thank you for your incredibly wonderful service in 2016 through 2020. You made those years prosperous and sane. But it is time to move on.

I’m likely to get a ton of flak for this post. That’s okay, I can take it.

I agree. He had his day, and it was a good day. But it’s time to move forward. No flak from me.

Trump is running in '24. Desantis will get crushed if he tries to go against Trump.

You will be voting for Trump in Nov. ‘24.

Get used to the idea.

Where else are you going to go?

I’m afraid I’ve reached that point as well.

“Mini orange man wanna bee”..... and there it is right there. The cult of Trump. Desantis wins a huge swing state by 20 points, and turns it solidly red top to bottom, and the insecure Trump fan boys can’t take the fact that their boy might get the spotlight taken from him for a day or so.

The cult of Trump is all about Trump. And nothing else. If DJT calls you down to some compound in South America, be careful what you drink.

I, too, am in deep red Alabama.

Before we diss Trump over his ego, at least appreciate one side-effect of his ego that we've taken for granted. He pointed this out in 2016, I believe after he won the primary.

Trump said that from that moment on he's taking most of the heat from the freedom-killing Dims. That most of their fiery arrows will be shot at him instead of their fellow Americans who were routinely being targeted for simple things like running a business without forcing their female employees to share locker rooms and restrooms with men.

To be sure, the left is still going after some of us, as the Jan 6 protestors in jail can attest. And they're still going after Jack Phillips (the baker in Colorado). But for the most part, they've left the rest of us alone and put most of their focus onto Trump.

So before you discard Trump over his ego, make sure you're ready for the left to go back to focusing their cross-hairs on us average Joes if we nominate a Desantis or Paul.

Well said. We can never thank Trump enough for holding off the dreaded Hill-bot in 2016, still the most incredible election of my lifetime. But he was the main reason that this cycle went poorly for our side. Essentially this race was Biden and the Democrats incredibly poor performance in virtually every area of governance vs Trump and Trump lost. This cycle should have been a slaughter of the Democrats. They had absolutely nothing to run on other than fear of Trump and it was enough to overcome all of their failures. If Trump truly cares about the movement that he created he will bow out and endorse DeSantis.

I disagree. If he was able to motivate enough republicans to vote MAGA in the primaries and we lost the general, it means that this country is lost to the takers. I listened to that loser Santorum last night and he was practically giggling with glee at the loss. He hatred for Trump on full display.

I think this country is headed full communist and there are not enough good old fashioned Americans to stop it at the ballot box.

I love DT. I do think he is a great person who loves his country and has sacrificed much for it. I think his time as President had gone. Last night showed that it is possible for a Republican to build consensus and win convincingly on strong conservative principles. That was not Donald Trump.

RR is still the greatest president in my life time. I formed that opinion when i was in highschool history class being taught by a kirkland cox in Virginia.

DT comes close, heck, his greatest skill was to ‘own’ the libs. i chuckled every time seeing TDS goes off. but being the greatest troll ever for dems doesn’t get you votes as we can see the result from last night.

sure, his fans are 100% diehards and loyal to him, but why doesn’t he uses them as part of his staff? we wouldn’t have the backstabbing problem that seems to follow him everywhere.

that said, I have not decided yet, let’s see what happens in the next few weeks.

I don’t think you’re wrong. I think Trump attacking Desantis is a misstep and makes him look petty and vindictive which is not what we need right now. He’s still charismatic, still useful, still has a lot of support, and still has energy to fight. But he’s made some pretty bad decisions this year to be honest.

Would I vote for Trump in a contested primary? It depends on who else is running. Desantis has a good track record but I’m also getting suspicious that the GOPe is realizing this and starting to work VERY hard on compromising him to block another Trump run.

Would I vote for Trump in a general election if he won the primary? Absolutely without hesitation.

THIS, is what the real problem is. our own party wars against itself.

Repubs are not conservatives or even slightly populist. They are a party that offers nothing to voters but war and lower taxes with the wealthier getting the biggest cut.

The RAT party has already had their expulsion of the moderate side and the far left won. They did because they are ruthless and will lie, cheat, and steal to win.

We aren’t going to do that so this constant we gotta just vote beyond the amount of the RAT cheat is freaking ridiculous.

My own opinion was that the whole midterm game was manipulated for a reason. All the over the top polls giving totally false hope. We were set up to feel the same demoralizing feeling as 2020. Watching what has been happening right here on FR in the last few days tells me I am right.

Same thing will happen in 2024, even if Biden’s bunch stinks more and more.

I respectfully disagree with the premise that Reagan faced the same hostile media that Trump faced.

I didn't recognize a difference in the media between Reagan and Bush Sr. But there was a sizeable increase in hostility from the Drive By Media toward Bush Jr. Then even more toward Trump.

It's like saying a cop should have handled being shot at as gracefully as a prior cop handled being punched at.

Fetterman showed Dems can run a meat suit carcass as a candidate and still win. So Joe can just stay in his basement and they’ll fire up the mail in votes to push him over the top again.

People seeing the inflation, gas prices, food prices, crime, possible nuclear war run out and vote for more of that? Morons.

Republicans appeal to reason too much. Most voters are morons and some are just one issue voters. “I’m black so I pull the D straight ticket because Republicans are the Klan or are Nazis and I want free stuff.” “LGBTQ so I have to vote D or my rights will all be taken away.” “Young female and want to get an abortion. Republicans need to get their hands off my body!” “I’m a brainwashed college kid and voting Democrat is the cool thing to do. All my professors say so.”

Florida showed Hispanics are who we need to be targeting to come over as the working class lunch pail Republican future voters.

I’m sticking with Trump though until he chooses to step aside. The RINOs just want to use DeSantis to land some punches to hurt Trump in 2024 and hurt Ron’s future chances by alienating the MAGA base.

I said much the same things to others in line at Trumps Save America rally in Anchorage. Couple people got mad at me for it.
Hey, if he’s the nominee, he would get my vote, but between DeSantis and Trump, DeSantis is my vote.

I’m with you on this. 2022 looked like a mirror image of 2020 and 2024 will be the same or worse if we arrive in the same condition. I celebrate that Trump changed the party’s direction and saved it from irrelevancy on a national scale. We were the party of war and tax cuts until 2016, and tons of new voters are re-engaged. We came out as a party of the working class and have made inroads with all kinds of voters since he ran.

That said, the MAGA movement needs to move on without one man as king maker. It simply didn’t work this time any better than 2020. I don’t disparage what was accomplished, but all individuals eventually are faced with hard decisions to step aside. Business leaders, politicians and the like all eventually create a succession plan for long-term success. We’re facing that now.

There is no sense making a binary choice between your two best alternatives, any sooner than you need to.

I’m going to wait and see what happens.

At some point, I may have to choose between Trump and someone else - but that point is nowhere close.

“I read about Trump saying (on election eve no less) that he’d start dumping secret dirt on DeSantis if DeSantis ran.”

Thank you! I read that, too, but cannot for the life of me find that thread. I was horrified. He said he knew (”bad stuff” implied) more about DeSantis except maybe his wife. No matter how many searches I do, I can’t find the thread again.

People compare him to Reagan, but Reagan wouldn’t do that. He was an adult.

Many people share your views of Trump.
Trouble is, who will we back? People we think are strong, wimp out under the withering attack of the press.
Name another candidate that will be brave enough to say and do the things Trump does.
Jeb? Mitt? Desantis is still an unknown. He could start strong and collapse midway.
For myself, I will let things unfold. If Trump runs, and if he is the nominee, he will have my backing.

I agree with some of what you say such as Trump doesn’t know when to pick a fight and when to be silent. However, I don’t think we’re voting our way out of this. Early voting and mail-in ballots are rife with problems, fraud kind of problems. I don’t know what the answer is but Tuesday didn’t suprise me after 2020. Disappoint me? Yes. Surprise me? No.
