Sailcat is an interesting story. They made some demo tapes (including "Motorcycle Mama") in Muscle Shoals, Alabama in the 1971 timeframe but discarded the tapes and disbanded, thinking it was all a big waste of time.

But some guy whose name I can't remember recovered the tapes and sent them off to Elektra records, who wanted to sign the band immediately. So this guy, whose name I still can't remember, frantically tried contacting the guys in the band to get them back together again. One of then was slinging fried eggs and hash in some Jacksonville, Florida diner and didn't want to give up his job because it was the best job he had to date. But he was eventually convinced.

The album was hastily recorded and went on to sell 400,000 copies on the strength of the title cut that went to #12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Sailcat ended up playing Carnegie Hall in Manhattan! After the show, they ran up a $700 tab (big money at the time) at a dive bar in Hell's Kitchen.

It was quite the ride.
