Sorry to hear this. He won a lot of championships and was Wilt Chamberlain’s nemesis. RIP Bill Russell.

88 is a very long life for a man that tall. RIP. Possibly the GOAT.

Always thought it interesting that at some point in his career Bill would sit in the bleachers drinking coffee and reading the newspaper while the other players practiced. He was so good there really wasn't any point in wearing his body down I suppose.

Off the top of my head, I can name more players from those old Celtic teams of the 50s and 60s than I can of the current Celtics: Bill Russell, Sam Jones, K.C. Jones, Bill Sharman, Bob Cousy, and John Havlicek.

I had always been vaguely aware that there was a basketball great named Bill Russell, but didn't know until I saw his photo today that he was black. Shows how closely I follow basketball.
A couple of announcers at the Milwaukee Brewers-Boston Red Sox game today were talking about Russell. One said that he was in 21 games that were the equivalent of Game 7 of the World Series (meaning the loser of that game went home defeated). Russell's team was 21 for 21 in those games.

Have to salute this great Celtic from the 1950/60s.

Russell vs Chamberlain was always a show back then. I couldn’t name a half dozen NBA players today.

While coaching the Seattle Supersonics, he married a white girl from the suburbs of south King County. I was buying gas in that neighborhood and he was filling his Rolls Royce right next to me, (self service) with nobody else around.
I said something quietly like "how's it going coach?", or something similarly innocuous but he gave no response whatsoever. Wouldn't even look my way. It was pretty cold. Great player, though.
