...**Avoiding unseen food hazards is the reason people often check the dates on food packaging. And printed with the month and year is often one of a dizzying array of phrases: “best by,” “use by,” “best if used before,” “best if used by,” “guaranteed fresh until,” “freeze by” and even a “born on” label applied to some beer. **

You might be right- lettuce will last longer than a week even sometimes-

[[I remember when a loaf of bread wouldn’t last 4 days without getting stale, and growing mold within a week, even if you kept it packaged tight.]]

Yup- noticed the same thing- Some of them ore ‘natural ingredient breads’ from like health food stores still go bad very quickly, and have to be eaten quickly=

[[Food could be sitting in a processing plant undated until shipped, then dated as it goes out the door.]]

i always wondered about that- especially for things like soda and such- does it sit around in vats waitign to be bottled? Or in warehouses waiting to be labelled and shipped out?

I hate it when they discount the hard cheese because it is almost out of date. I buy it, but it is still too fresh. It takes another couple months in the door of the fridge to ripen.

i’ve got an unopened 6 pack of budweiser cans with a born on date 09-11-2001

I have an unopened can of Billy Beer from 1977. I bought two cans in 1977, drank part of one and never wanted to drink the other.

When we lived in the Middle East, we were told to not eat vegetables bought on the economy, b/c they use human waste as fertilizer in many cases.

So we had to soak produce in a bath of bleach b4 consuming.

Fortunately, we never got sick.

Once had pint of heavy cream, uncovered way, way back in the fridge a tear later. It was over a year old.

It was fine. Passed the smell test.

Someone sent a can of Billy Beer to the FDA for evaluation.

The results from the FDA were: "we regret to inform you that your horse has diabetes."

Since it is Budweiser you'll never know the difference between that and the current production run.

My x-wife left a shrimp dish in the back of the refrigerator for two years. When I popped the top everyone in the house started coughing and spitting somewhat instantly. The diffusion rate was startling. It had almost dissolved its way through the Tupperware. True story.

She could have received a Nobel Prize in bio-weapons research if we'd submitted it.

We met a trapper In Alaska. He gave me a spoon of sourdough starter that he claimed was 60 y/o that he got from an oldtimer up there.

I kept it in a dark color crock and used it frequently to make a wonderful bread.

One day, the nanny was cleaning the fridge, found the starter and threw it out b/c she thought it was spoiled.! I was so angry!

I’m old school. My grandmother taught me all about food safety. She’d open a canned food and smell it, taste it, and say good or no good. She knew poultry was not to be cut unless on a clean, dry surface and not co mingled with any other foods. Anything cooked and left on the counter with meat or fish for more than 1 hour was to be thrown away. Vegetables were ok. Any mayonnaise infused food was to be kept cold and eaten immediately. She was always clearing the summer buffet to put into the fridge. There are many other rules to be followed but really, good common sense is all you need.
