They probably did both. The father and son team are very fortunate that they were not murdered by the FBI. A lot of people have not been as lucky. The wife of Randy Weaver for one.

Most states require that anything found be turned over to Law Enforcement for safekeeping until the legal owners or their heirs can be located.
If the find was at any time owned by the government you are required by law to notify the government. Plus, IIRC, this gold was supposedly on Federal land. In that case you are required to notify the government before you begin digging.

In the case of a treasure trove, a large amount of precious metals, coins, paper money or art objects, the finder is required to notify the government who will take possession of the find.
The government is supposed to pay a finders fee for any treasure found on Federal land or which once was in government possession.

Only about five states have a Finders Keepers law.

IMHO the FIBbies hid the find and kept any finders fees for themselves.

Weaver’s daughter Sara posted online that he had died on May 11, 2022, after being sick since at least mid-April. A cause of death was not given. He was 74 years old.

A broken heart could been part of it. Seeing the Country he put a good portion of his life defending being destroyed from within. The voters of America owe him an apology for the sons of bitches they put in charge of the Country such as Jimmy Carter [4 years], Bill [coke nose] Clinton [8 years] barrack obama [8 years], Lying Joe Biden [as long as the lying bastard wants to stay in the White House] but he will never get it. Thanks for the info.

You DO remember who the President was in 1992, right? Maybe the incident helped Slick Willie get elected.

If you are squeamish about the law treasure hunting is not for you. The govt will never even give you a tiny finders fee.

“If you are squeamish about the law treasure hunting is not for you. The govt will never even give you a tiny finders fee.”

I gave up dreams of buried treasure when I was 10 or 11.
I know how corrupt the FedGov is.
I know several people who retired from FedGov, half of them having worked in the District of Corruption, their name for DC. They’ve let a little spill but not anything people would go to prison over. They’re protecting their taxpayer supplied pensions.

When can we close down the FBI? They are a weaponized organization acting unlawfully.

this much gold is a major issue.

we will never see proof of the truth but the information and pattern to date indicate it was found and mishandled, at a very high level almost certainly.
