Depeche Mode’s Andy Fletcher Dead At 60

Depeche Mode’s Andy Fletcher has died at 60. “We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher,” reads a statement that was posted on the band’s social media accounts. “Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint. Our hearts are with his family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts and respect their privacy in this difficult time.”

Fletcher was born in 1961 in Nottingham, England, and moved to Basildon when he was a child. It was there that he met future Depeche Mode founding member Vince Clarke. In the late ’70s, he started a band with Clarke called No Romance In China; after meeting Martin Gore, they all formed a different trio called Composition Of Sound. In 1980, Dave Gahan joined the group and they changed their name to Depeche Mode.

Though Clarke would leave the band after the release of their debut album Speak And Spell in 1981, Fletcher continued as an active member, playing keyboard throughout their entire career. Along with Martin and Gore, he released 17 albums with Depeche Mode, the most recent of which was 2017’s Spirit. He was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2020.

They were bigger in the UK and Europe, but even in the US they had at least 10 songs in the Hot 100.

DM was a shining light of ingenuity in a derivative wasteland of hair metal and teen popstar that was mid to late 80’s music.

Well said. I was a couple years ahead of you in school. We listened to classic/progressive rock, and a few kids were into punk. Then MTV introduced us to all kinds of new stuff, like Madness, The Clash, etc. Fun times.

Electronic type techno music. It’s good when you’re in that mood. You probably have heard some the hits.

Don't forget Just Can't Get Enough (1981, I believe).

They are lucky to still be alive.. They were hitting heroin pretty hard for awhile (which is what many of their songs were about). (LOTs of hidden messages in their songs.)

Okay. all I remember is the song "People are People".

I did not know "Dupeche Mode", had a cult like status, amongst some on FR.

RIP, Andy Fletcher.

BTW, the keyboardist on the right hand side (no hat), I believe is Vince Clarke, who also played for Erasure and Yaz (Yazoo)... can’t remember, but possibly also for New Order (I also think he was the only non-queer, and didn’t like the darker music of DM’s newer songs).

My favorite 3 were Music for the Masses, Violator, and Ultra, but I like all of their music.
The newer ones are really good, but awkward (like that song Wrong).
The video is almost like watching some action/thriller/horror movie.. lol.

I seem to be the only one to hear it.. but listen to New Order's True Faith, and then to Peter Schilling's World of Lust and Crime, and tell me that one didn't borrow from the other...
